Chapter 5: Blood and Wolfsbane

The Lost Moon: Rebirth of the Alpha Queen 5 of 6

The massive vaulted hall of the High Council Citadel glowed beneath iron wheel chandeliers. Hearth fires crackled against the stone walls, but the red light from the rising Blood Moon slanted through the high stained glass windows, casting crimson streaks across the oak tables. The scent of roasted wild boar and mulled wine mixed heavily with the faint chemical bite of cleaning spirits.

High Council elders sat along horseshoe tables for the Solstice Eve banquet. Valerie sat at the head of the Obsidian table, her broadsword resting by her chair, with Thea seated at her side in tailored black combat leather. Across the room, Julian sat brooding at his table, draining goblets of mead, his eyes locked on the exterior courtyard where his vanguard amassed.

Selena moved gracefully among the banquet servers in her emerald velvet gown. She approached the head table, curtsying with venomous grace, holding a silver chalice. “A toast to the morrow’s contest. May the Goddess favor the rightful ruler of the north.”

Valerie didn’t touch her chalice, her icy-blue eyes cold as glacier ice. “The Goddess favors those who fight with steel, Lady Selena, not those who hide behind counterfeit ink.”

The sharp whistle of three silver darts sliced through the candlelit air.

Three disguised servers flipped silver serving trays, revealing mechanical wrist darts. The projectiles struck the two Obsidian door sentinels, who collapsed instantly. Panic erupted. Crystal goblets shattered on stone; screaming nobles dove beneath the heavy tables.

Selena drew a six-inch silver-vein stiletto from her sleeve, its blade coated in glistening purple sludge. She lunged directly at Queen Valerie’s throat.

Thea dove across the five-foot oak table, shoving Valerie clear of the strike. The poisoned silver stiletto plunged deep into Thea’s left shoulder, burying to the hilt.

Selena shrieked with manic glee, stepping back. “Die, broken mutt! That poison rots an Alpha’s heart in three breaths!”

The concentrated purple wolfsbane flooded Thea’s arterial blood. But instead of cellular necrosis, the neurotoxin hit the dormant Celestial Eclipse bloodline and triggered the primal combustion threshold.

Her body temperature surged past two hundred degrees. Steam hissed violently from her pores. The skin of her hands glowed with blinding violet-gold light. The searing heat incinerated the purple venom in her bloodstream, supercharging every cell with volatile lunar radiation.

A deafening sonic boom and a violet shockwave blasted outward from her core.

The kinetic force overturned five-hundred-pound oak banquet tables, shattered the iron chandeliers, and extinguished half the torches in the hall. The stone floorboards groaned under a sudden, immense mass.

Thea transformed. The mortal form shattered, replaced by the legendary ten-foot-tall Celestial Eclipse Dire Wolf. Her coat of pitch-black obsidian fur was etched with glowing silver-violet celestial runes, a crown of luminous silver fur shining between her pointed ears.

Her Sovereign Command Aura crashed down like a collapsing mountain. Every noble, Alpha, and sentinel in the room slammed onto their knees, gasping for breath under the crushing atmospheric pressure.

The three assassins drew their broadswords. Thea moved in a blur of obsidian shadow. A single swipe of her massive front paw shattered the first assassin’s ribs, hurling him entirely through a stone fireplace.

The second assassin thrust a silver sword at her chest. Thea bit down on the forged blade, snapping the steel like dry pine with a sickening metallic crunch, then flung his body across the dais.

Selena screamed, scrambling wildly toward the double iron doors.

In a single forty-foot leap, Thea landed directly above her. Her massive clawed paw slammed down on Selena’s right wrist with a sharp crack, pinning the shrieking noblewoman to the blood-slick marble floor.

Silence descended over the hall, broken only by Selena’s sobbing shrieks and the deep, rhythmic breathing of the ten-foot Eclipse Wolf.

Valerie stepped forward, her broadsword drawn. “Behold the Sovereign Eclipse! Treason has been answered!”

Heavy iron chains rattled violently against the exterior of the great double doors. Heavy iron bars dropped into place, sealing the Citadel from the outside.

A low, thunderous bellow echoed through the night—three deep, menacing blasts of the Bloodfang War Horn.

Julian’s voice roared through the heavy oak panels from the courtyard, backed by the snarling of five hundred shifted wolves. “If the Council will not grant me the crown, my vanguard will take it in blood! No one leaves this temple alive!”

“Let them breach the gates. Tonight, the hunter becomes the prey.”
