Chapter 2: The Obsidian Sanctuary

The Lost Moon: Rebirth of the Alpha Queen 2 of 6

Dense sulfur and crushed wintergreen steam billowed from boiling mineral vents, rolling over the subterranean volcanic cavern of black basalt. Glacial mountain drafts whistled through high obsidian arrow-slits, cutting the searing heat. The water lapped steadily against the dark stone of the healing pools beneath the Obsidian Citadel.

Thea sat submerged to her shoulders in the steaming mineral water. The purple-black bruising along her ribs shifted to pale yellow, the fractured bones knitting tightly beneath her bronze skin. Silver-laced scars marked the tearing of fir branches, healing rapidly under the extreme thermal properties of her awakened blood.

Alchemist Mirela stood at the edge of the pool, extending a crystal vial of silver-leaf sedative. Thea batted the vial away. The glass clattered against the basalt lip, splashing scalding water over the stone.

“Take the sedative away,” Thea rasped, the violet rings in her amber eyes flaring. “I don’t need sleep. Sleep won’t teach me how to snap Julian’s spine.”

On a carved stone bench nearby, Queen Valerie sat in her midnight-blue silk robes over obsidian armor. She turned a heavy parchment page of an iron-bound court ledger, her tone smooth and chilling. “Julian is only a symptom, Thea. The rot started twenty years before you were thrown off that cliff.”

Valerie slid three yellowed dispatch scrolls across the wet stone. The parchment stopped inches from Thea’s wet hands. “Your parents did not die of mountain fever. House Vane smuggled three barrels of refined purple wolfsbane to Julian’s father. They paralyzed your father’s lungs in his own bed, forged the deed to the Mooncrest silver veins, and left you an orphan to be starved.”

Thea’s knuckles turned white against the pool rim. The solid basalt cracked beneath her grip with a sharp snap. Molten violet embers ignited fully in her amber irises, burning through the steam. “They poisoned them in their own hall… while I was seven years old.”

She rose out of the steaming water, ignoring the sharp pull of knit bone and taut muscle. Valerie tossed her an obsidian-woven combat tunic and wrapped her hands in stiff leather.

“Then do not bleed for grief,” Valerie commanded, her icy-blue eyes locking onto Thea’s. “Bleed for the crown.”

The Sacred Moonstone Chamber stood at the peak of the Citadel—a towering dome of polished obsidian glass. Suspended fifty feet above by heavy iron chains rested the three-ton Celestial Moonstone meteorite. It vibrated with a deep violet resonance, charging the air with buzzing ozone. Static electricity made the hairs on Thea’s arms stand on end.

Thea stood in the center of a consecrated runic circle carved into the floor. Valerie and Master Gideon, the scarred veteran Beta commander, observed behind the rune ward line.

Moonlight aligned through the ceiling aperture, hitting the meteorite. A beam of concentrated violet-gold radiance struck Thea’s sternum with the force of a battering ram.

Searing biological agony ripped through her. Her body temperature surged past 106 degrees. Veins illuminated through her bronze skin like burning silver wires. The extreme cardiac strain pounded in her ears—the fifteen-minute combustion limit tearing at her mortal vessel.

Psychological trauma surged with the heat. Memories of Julian’s mocking laughter, Selena’s heel grinding her signet, the childhood whispers calling her “broken mutt” all fed the internal inferno.

Thea embraced the fire, throwing her head back and roaring into the cavern, “I am not broken. I am the storm.”

Bone-cracking kinetics took hold. Her clavicles broadened violently. Her spine elongates with wet snapping pops. Dense obsidian fur erupted along her limbs. In less than three seconds, the mortal shell shattered, reshaping into a ten-foot-tall Eclipse Dire Wolf covered in glowing silver-violet runic patterns.

She stood massive, lethal, and burning with sovereign heat.

The scene shifted to the high outdoor battle terrace of the Citadel overlooking snow-capped crags. Icy wind whipped across frost-blasted flagstones, carrying the sharp scent of blood, snow, and honed iron.

The ten-foot Eclipse Wolf towered over the stone terrace. Master Gideon and four Beta sentinels in full plate armor circled her, reinforced iron polearms leveled at her chest.

Thea opened her maw and released a Sovereign Command Roar—a low-frequency psychic shockwave that rippled through the air, vibrating the stones beneath their boots. Gideon’s polearm was torn from his grip. All four Betas collapsed onto both knees, paralyzed by the sheer autonomic instinct triggered by the Eclipse Sovereign aura.

Thea shifted back to human form with a seamless forward roll, the violent thermal heat instantly receding into her core. She caught two lunar bone daggers tossed by Valerie mid-motion.

Gideon recovered instantly, drawing his broadsword and lunging. Thea slipped under his heavy guard, parrying the iron blade with her left bone dagger. She pivoted sharply behind his back and executed three lightning-fast slices, severing the thick leather buckles of his breastplate.

The forty-pound iron armor crashed to the flagstones with a deafening clatter. Gideon froze, his breathing shallow, with a bone dagger point pressed firmly against his carotid artery.

Total elapsed time: four seconds.

Valerie walked onto the terrace, buckling the bone dagger sheaths to Thea’s waist.

“Silverpine is hosting the Alpha Solstice Gala tonight to celebrate your ‘death’ and toast their stolen silver. Put on the cloak, Thea. It is time to hunt.”
