Chapter 3: Infiltration of the Alpha Gala
Roaring hearths spat pine resin across the vaulted oak and stone of the Grand Ballroom in Bloodfang Keep. Long oak tables groaned under the weight of roasted venison, wild boar, and spiced mead. Crimson pack banners with howling wolves hung heavily from stone arches. The thick stench of spilled alcohol, roasted fat, and aggressive Alpha pheromones suffocated the air.
Thea stood motionless forty feet away in the shadows of the upper stone gallery. Cloaked in midnight-black velvet with an obsidian filigree veil, her scent was heavily masked with winter cedar unguent. Her hands clenched beneath the velvet folds, her nails biting into calloused palms as she watched the high dais.
Julian Thorne sat center stage in a blood-red silk-lined coat, flushed with mead and unchecked arrogance. His oppressive True Alpha aura flared outward, demanding submission from the room. Selena lounged beside him in an emerald velvet gown, draped carelessly in Thea’s stolen white ermine mantle, pinned with the Mooncrest sapphire clasp.
Julian slammed his silver chalice onto the oak table, booming with laughter. “To the purification of Silverpine! A pack is only as strong as its fiercest fang. The weak rot in the chasm where they belong!”
Selena tilted her head, her purr carrying to the surrounding sycophantic noblewomen. “A tragedy about poor Thea, of course. But some creatures were simply born to be stepping stones for true nobility.”
Thea lowered her chin, her molten amber eyes tracking their every movement. “Drink your wine, Julian. Every sip will cost you a pint of blood.”
Slipping away from the gallery during a patrol shift change, Thea descended into the subterranean masonry tunnels twenty feet below the ballroom. The air turned damp and cold, lit by sputtering torches. The smell of sulfur, black-powder forge smoke, and the unmistakable metallic-sweet stench of unrefined purple wolfsbane permeated the damp corridors. Water dripped steadily onto the cobblestones.
She stalked across the rafters above the damp armory. Below her, Smuggler Captain Kaelen and two two-hundred-fifty-pound Bloodfang enforcers hovered over an iron strongbox resting on a wooden crate. The High Council decrees made possession of unrefined wolfsbane punishable by the silver pyre.
Thea dropped from the timber support beam like an owl—silent, zero air disturbance. She landed in a low crouch directly behind the first enforcer.
Before the massive guard could turn, her left bone dagger struck the nerve junction at the base of his skull. The enforcer collapsed instantly into the hay without a single groan.
The second guard spun, his hand reaching for the heavy hilt at his waist. Thea stepped inside his reach. She drove her dagger pommel into his throat with explosive kinetic force, then slammed his head against the damp stone wall. He crumpled unconscious to the cobblestones.
Captain Kaelen drew a serrated dagger coated in black paste, lunging directly for her eye.
Thea sidesteps with supernatural agility. She grabbed his forearm in an iron clamp and twisted counter-clockwise. A sharp, sickening snap echoed off the vault walls as his radius bone fractured.
She pressed the razor-sharp edge of her bone dagger firmly against his jugular, tearing the brass key from his belt. “One sound, and I drain you like a slaughtered calf.”
Kaelen gasped, his face draining of color, clutching his broken wrist. Thea unlocked the iron strongbox, pulling out the evidence: The Illicit Wolfsbane Ledger marked with House Vane and House Thorne seals. The Forged Mooncrest Land Deed stamped with counterfeit council wax. A sealed glass vial of concentrated purple wolfsbane distillate.
Documents secured tightly against her inner leather tunic, Thea moved up into the vaulted marble colonnade linking the inner keep to the frosty courtyard. Drafty mountain wind whistled through open arches. Torchlight cast long, dancing shadows on the white marble.
A tall, broad shadow stepped out from an archway ahead. Julian Thorne blocked the path, holding a silver wine cup, his steel-gray eyes sharp with predatory suspicion.
Julian’s massive frame dominated the corridor. “An Obsidian emissary wandering through my private residential corridor? Queen Valerie’s pets usually have better manners.”
Thea lowered her chin, speaking through the dark veil with an icy, disguised aristocratic drawl. “The Obsidian Court does not require your permission to inspect treaty grounds, Alpha Thorne.”
Julian stepped within inches of her. His nostrils flared as he drew a deep breath. “That scent… Winter pine and fresh mountain sleet.”
His hand shot out like an iron trap, clamping down around Thea’s right forearm with bruising force. His True Alpha dominance aura flared outward, heavy static shuddering through the air.
Beneath the veil, Thea’s molten amber eyes ignited with violet fire. She held back her Sovereign roar, keeping the Eclipse beast tightly chained, allowing only an unyielding physical counter-grip that forced Julian’s fingers to whiten.
“I know that scent… Who gave an Obsidian emissary permission to prowl my halls, Thea?”
