Chapter 1: The Blood on the Chasm

The Lost Moon: Rebirth of the Alpha Queen 1 of 6

The whistling gale howled at forty knots across Frostfang Cliff, driving sub-zero sleet that bit into bare skin like rusted needles. Hissing resin torches sputtered in the iron grips of four Bloodfang sentinels, casting bloody flickers over the packed snow. The air carried the heavy, feral stench of wet dire-fur, sulfur, and the sharp metallic tang of copper dripping from Thea’s split lip.

Thea Mooncrest was forced onto her knees at the crumbling rim of the two-thousand-foot drop. The storm tore at her coarse warrior braids, whipping them across her bronze skin. Her breath hitched in short, shivering gasps, her bare knees sinking into the freezing slush.

Julian Thorne towered over her, standing six-foot-three in a black military tunic lined with blood-red silk. His True Alpha dominance aura pressed down like an anvil on her spine, designed to force submission from a broken wolf.

“Weakness is a disease in this pack, Thea, and I am the cure,” Julian barked, his voice cutting through the gale with cold arrogance. “You brought nothing to House Thorne but a barren womb and a broken beast.”

From his left arm, Lady Selena stepped forward. Her emerald velvet gown, lined with pristine white ermine, brushed the bloody snow. She tilted her chin, her green eyes bright with cruel amusement. “How tragic for you, darling. But land requires a True Alpha’s seed, not the tears of a defective mutt.”

Thea raised her head. The wind lashed her face, but her molten amber eyes locked onto Julian’s with unyielding defiance. She spat a glob of blood directly onto the polished leather of his combat boot.

“You need my land because your clan is bankrupt, Julian,” Thea rasped, her voice low and cutting. “Without Mooncrest silver, your garrison starves before the thaw. You’re not an Alpha. You’re a thief in silver armor.”

Julian’s steel-gray eyes hardened. He seized Thea’s left hand in an iron vice, grinding the metacarpals together. With a violent wrench, he tore the ancestral silver betrothal band off her finger. The rough metal sheared through her skin, tearing flesh and splattering red droplets onto the virgin snow.

Selena moved in, her delicate fingers snapping the Mooncrest obsidian signet pendant from the leather cord around Thea’s neck. She dropped the black stone into the slush. With a sharp twist of her pointed iron-tipped heel, Selena ground the obsidian into powder.

Thea exploded upward. Muscles uncoiling like a steel spring, she drove her bare fist directly toward Selena’s exposed throat.

Julian intercepted in a fraction of a second. His iron grip clamped over her wrist, twisting the joint until bone ground against bone. Shifting his weight, he drove a heavy, steel-plated combat boot straight into Thea’s sternum.

The sickening crack of two ribs breaking resonated over the howling wind. Kinetic momentum lifted Thea entirely off her feet. Gravity seized her, hurling her backward over the frozen precipice into the black abyss.

The sickening weightlessness of free-fall stole the breath from her shattered lungs. Wind roared in her ears, a deafening cascade of pressure. She smashed violently through ancient, frost-covered fir branches, the jagged wood tearing her flesh and slowing her terminal velocity.

Impact.

Thea crashed onto a deep snowbank atop solid rock on the chasm floor. Her third and fourth ribs fractured inward, piercing her left lung. Her right shoulder dislocated with a wet snap. The freezing permafrost immediately began numbing her extremities, the blood bubbling at the corner of her lips tasting of ice and iron. Death pressed heavy against her chest.

Ten feet away, half-buried under centuries of black ice and snow, rested the monolithic slab of the Celestial Lunar Altar. Its surface bore deep etchings of intertwined solar and lunar eclipse runes.

Thea refused to die in the mud.

Gritting her bloodstained teeth, she dragged herself by her bleeding right elbow. Inch by agonizing inch, her torso scraped across the frozen stone, leaving a jagged red smear in the snow. Her muscles screamed, burning with lactic acid and adrenaline.

Her blood-soaked palm slapped flat onto the central carved eclipse channel of the obsidian slab.

The blood hit the stone. An instant, violent violet-gold flare erupted through the rune channels, blinding against the dark.

A searing thermal wave surged from the cold altar directly into her chest. The heat spiked past one hundred degrees, roaring through her veins like liquid fire. The sound of bone knitting echoed in the cavernous drop—cartilage realigning with sharp wet pops, internal hemorrhaging sealing under the blinding heat. The agony was absolute, rewriting her biology in seconds.

Her amber irises dilated, igniting with radiant violet-gold rings. Her dormant royal wolf beast, silenced for decades, awakened from centuries of slumber with a psychic roar that shook the very foundation of the cliff.

The howling blizzard abruptly calmed around the altar’s radius. Heavy sovereign pressure settled over the canyon floor, displacing the frozen air. The scent of ozone, crushed nightshade, and ancient cedar rolled through the mist.

Queen Valerie stepped out of the swirling white curtain. Flanked by two elite Obsidian Sentinels in mirrored plate armor, her regal midnight-blue silk riding robes snapped in the residual thermal draft. Her icy-blue eyes locked onto the glowing altar and Thea’s radiating aura.

Thea clutched a jagged shard of black basalt, baring bloodstained teeth, her chest heaving as the healing heat subsided into raw power. “Stay back… I don’t kneel.”

Valerie knelt gracefully in the snow, her movements precise. She caught Thea’s wrist with gentle, unyielding strength, her armor clinking softly. “I did not come to make you kneel, child. I came to give you the blade that will make the northern realm bow.”

Valerie traced the glowing Eclipse sigil burned into Thea’s palm, the violet light reflecting in her cold eyes. “For twenty years, the High Council lied, claiming the Celestial Eclipse line was extinct. Julian Thorne threw you into this pit to steal your silver, yet he handed you your true birthright.”

Valerie draped her heavy ermine-lined riding cloak around Thea’s shivering shoulders. The two sentinels spread scent-killing cedar ash over the bloodied snow, hauling Thea onto the back of a massive black shadow-steed.

“You are no broken wolf, Thea Mooncrest. You are the rightful Sovereign Heir to the Celestial Eclipse—and together, we are going to burn their empire to ash.”
