Chapter 17: Meeting the Sinclair Legal Counsel
Disregarding her son’s warning, Evelyn Carter put on her old fur coat and marched straight to the lobby of Sinclair Tower the following morning.
She threw herself onto the marble floor of the main lobby, wailing at the top of her lungs in front of dozens of corporate employees and visitors.
“Help! Someone help me!” Evelyn shrieked, crying crocodile tears. “The Chairwoman of Sinclair, Natalie, abandoned her sick mother-in-law! She put my son in jail and left me starving on the streets! Is there no justice in this world?!”
Reporters who were waiting nearby immediately rushed over with cameras and microphones.
“Ma’am! Are you really Chairwoman Natalie’s former mother-in-law?”
“Is it true that Sinclair Consortium is abusing its power against common citizens?”
Evelyn inwardly smirked, feeling satisfied with the commotion she was causing. She was certain Natalie would pay her millions just to quiet her down.
Suddenly, the private glass elevator opened.
Lucas Vance walked out, flanked by three senior attorneys from Sinclair’s top legal team. He held a thick black folder in his hand.
“Mrs. Evelyn Carter,” Lucas spoke calmly into a microphone, his voice broadcasting across the lobby speakers. “We’ve been expecting you.”
Evelyn glared at him. “Lucas! Tell Natalie to come down here and give me my ten million dollars in living expenses, or I won’t leave this floor!”
Lucas smiled faintly, opening the black folder.
“Mrs. Carter, before you demand ten million dollars, let’s talk about the three million dollars you illegally laundered from Carter Group’s payroll account into your private gambling account over the past three years.”
Evelyn’s weeping instantly stopped. Her face turned pale. “W-What laundering?! I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
