Chapter 6

Dumping My Quarterback After I Slimmed Down 6 of 6

The visceral deep-bass roar of 10,000 fans stomping on aluminum bleachers shook the concrete of Crestwood Memorial Stadium. The smell of damp turf, roasted peanuts, and sulfur smoke from pre-game pyrotechnics drifted into the South Player Tunnel. It was Friday, October 17, 7:15 PM—Homecoming Night. Oakridge football trailed 14-10 at the end of the second quarter.

In the tunnel, Chloe Mitchell led the 16-member varsity squad through explosive plyometric jumps and wrist mobility drills. She was 145 pounds of sculpted athletic power in a black-and-gold varsity bodysuit, the gold Captain ‘C’ pin gleaming over her sternum. Her honey-blonde ponytail was tied with a metallic gold ribbon, her emerald eyes radiating supreme focus. Maya Lin and Brenda Cole executed their counts with razor-sharp precision, fully drilled and loyal to Chloe’s 8-count leadership. Coach Briggs nodded with absolute confidence; Ohio State Lead Division I Scout Coach Marcus Harris was watching from VIP Box 4.

Chloe led the team out onto the sideline turf. The 500,000-watt stadium floodlights illuminated the vapor in the 45-degree autumn air. She walked past the football bench. Sitting on the far end, stripped of jersey #7, was Everett Hayes. He wore a faded, stained gray hoodie, his hands jammed in his pockets, watching the backup quarterback throw an interception. He looked up at Chloe, his eyes begging for a glance, but she walked past him without turning her head, treating him as non-existent air. He was a ghost.

Tyler Reed stood on the track runway in black athletic gear, holding a tin of pure magnesium carbonate chalk. He stepped over and rubbed a dry layer across Chloe’s palms and forearms. The cool, smooth texture coated her skin. His intense gray eyes locked with hers.

“Ten thousand people out there, Mitchell,” Tyler said, his voice a steady, electrifying hum. “Go show them who owns this stadium.”

The halftime horn blared. The stadium announcer’s voice cut through the fog: *And now, taking the fifty-yard line—your Oakridge Varsity Cheerleaders, led by Captain Chloe Mitchell!*

Chloe stepped past the white sideline chalk. She didn’t look at the press boxes, and she didn’t look at the disabled section behind the fence where Selina Vance sat weeping in a wheelchair, her left leg elevated in a fiberglass cast. Chloe’s focus was an unbroken laser on the gold midfield star.

The 130-BPM orchestral hip-hop track dropped through the twelve-speaker array, hitting like a sonic shockwave.

*One, two, three, four.*

Sixteen athletes hit synchronized standing back tucks on count five. The acoustics of sixteen pairs of cheer shoes hitting the synthetic turf cracked like a rifle volley. The squad moved through rapid-fire pyramid transitions and alternating layout step-outs, instantly quieting the stadium chatter into stunned awe.

On count eight, Chloe took the center pocket for the master-level Valkyrie Cascade. Four synchronized power bases locked their hands under the arches of her soles.

Triple extension. Calves, quads, and glutes fired in a unified kinetic explosion.

Chloe shot straight into the black Ohio sky. Ten feet. Fourteen. Eighteen feet above the goalposts. The stadium lights blurred into a ring of cold white fire. At the apex, she locked into a majestic needle arabesque, holding the zero-gravity float for a half-beat.

She wrapped her forearms tightly across her chest. Her core became a rigid cylinder of steel as she snapped into a 720-degree double full twist. Tight axial rotation. She hit the completion beat flawlessly, dropping cleanly into Brenda’s airtight cradle catch with zero millimeters of lateral drift.

Chloe rebounded off the turf, punched into a thunderous round-off back handspring layout, and planted both heels dead center on the 50-yard gold star with both arms raised. Stick landing.

Ten thousand people leapt to their feet in a single, concussive roar, the standing ovation shaking the stadium to its foundations. Regional TV cameras flashed relentlessly from the press boxes.

By 9:05 PM, the deafening chants of *”CHLOE! CHLOE!”* echoed under exploding red-and-gold Homecoming fireworks in the night sky. Ohio State D1 Scout Coach Marcus Harris walked onto the midfield turf flanked by journalists. He shook Coach Briggs’ hand and presented two formal gold-embossed envelopes to Chloe Mitchell and Tyler Reed—full scholarship track invitations to the National Performance Combine.

Near the tunnel, Everett pulled his hood over his face and slinks away into the dark parking lot, permanently erased from Oakridge athletics.

Tyler stepped up beside Chloe. He lifted her onto his shoulder under the blinding fireworks, his arm warm and solid. He looked up into her glowing emerald eyes.

“Ready to conquer the Midwest Regional Classic in Columbus, Captain?” Tyler asked, his smile electric.

Chloe looked out at the roaring stadium, smiling with supreme champion authority. “We’re taking everything.”
