Chapter 5
The oppressive hum of fluorescent lighting buzzed through the Science Wing corridor outside the Athletic Director’s Office. Heavy autumn rain drummed against the high transoms. It was Thursday, October 16, 1:45 PM—Homecoming Eve, Week 6 of Chloe’s transformation.
Everett Hayes stepped out from the shadow of locker #118. He reeked of sour breath and panic. His letterman jacket was wrinkled, his hands shaking as he slammed a stack of glossy photographs against the metal locker door.
“Look at it, Mitchell!” Everett’s voice scraped with desperation. He shoved an eight-by-ten printout into her line of sight—her sophomore self, 240 pounds, bloated in an oversized grey sweatshirt. “Henderson flagged my portal to the clearinghouse. I got my NCAA suspension letter today. You hack into the portal and forge my makeup lab by five o’clock, or I blast these across the student board and mail them to every scout in the Big Ten!”
Chloe didn’t flinch. Her resting pulse stayed perfectly steady at 62 beats per minute. She stood at 145 pounds of shredded athletic perfection, possessing a 32-inch vertical leap and 100% core synchronization. She looked at the photo, then back to Everett’s bloodshot sclera.
“You think my past body is a weapon against me, Everett?” Chloe said, her voice a cold scalpel. “I built every ounce of this strength with my own blood. You couldn’t balance a checkbook without hiding behind my desk. Your entire athletic life is a fragile lie.”
She pulled her phone from her pocket and tapped the screen twice. She turned the high-resolution display toward his face.
It was a certified Google Workspace audit manifest: `HAYES_EVERETT_ACADEMIC_FRAUD_DOSSIER.PDF`. The file was stamped with IP logs, keystroke hashes, and author certificates proving two years of systematic academic fraud across forty-eight consecutive assignments.
“I sent the unencrypted file to Principal Campbell and the athletic board six minutes ago,” Chloe said quietly. “Your NCAA eligibility didn’t expire today, Everett. It never existed.”
Footsteps echoed down the hall. Principal Campbell and the School Resource Officer rounded the corner, holding printed copies of the dossier. They ordered Everett to the office immediately. Everett collapsed against the locker in ruined shock, sliding down the metal as his football career was executed.
At 4:30 PM, the Gold Arena smelled of vinyl cleaner, pre-wrap adhesive, and rubber. The squeak of cheer shoes echoed during the pre-game dress rehearsal. Tyler Reed stood guard at the corridor junction with quiet, protective physical dominance.
Chloe stepped onto blue center mat #3. Instantly, her kinesthetic sensors detected an abnormal four-inch lateral shift under her forefoot. The mat lacked the standard 12-psi tension. She crouched, lifted the vinyl skirt, and found the nylon anchor straps clean-sliced.
“Stop!” Chloe commanded, her voice cutting through the arena. “Nobody tumble on center mat three! The anchor straps have been deliberately cut!”
Selina Vance pushed past Coach Briggs. She wore heavy makeup and an aggressively taped left ankle, reckless and desperate to maintain her cheer throne. “Stop fabricating drama to steal the spotlight, Mitchell!” Selina sneered.
Ignoring the warning, Selina charged the mat. She launched into a high-speed round-off back handspring layout across the center seam. The unanchored mat slid four inches laterally out from under her.
With her chronic four-degree inward ankle pronation, Selina landed entirely on the lateral edge of her left foot. A horrifying, gunshot-like *CRACK-POP* echoed through the empty arena. Her left ATFL ligament tore completely.
Selina collapsed, shrieking in pure agony, clutching her instantly swelling foot as paramedics rushed the floor with a splint. The exact anatomical failure Chloe had predicted in Chapter 2 had manifested through Selina’s own malice.
By 5:00 PM, amber and red emergency lights flashed outside the gym doors as Selina was loaded into an ambulance. Inside, the whir of the 1080p security video feed projected onto the giant scoreboard. Principal Campbell played the gym’s surveillance from 11:45 PM the night before: Selina sneaking in with utility shears, slicing the mat straps, and stealing Chloe’s notebook from locker #44.
Richard Vance stormed the gym, threatening to pull his booster funds, but Principal Campbell shut him down cold, informing him the district attorney had already received the file for felony reckless endangerment. Vance was ordered off school grounds.
Coach Briggs turned to the assembled varsity squad. She took the gold-embroidered varsity Captain’s armband (‘C’) from her clipboard. She walked over to Chloe and pinned it directly to her bicep.
“Chloe Mitchell,” Coach Briggs said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. “You diagnosed the danger, protected this squad, and out-performed everyone in this building. You are the Varsity Cheer Captain. We have twenty-four hours until Homecoming kickoff. Take the floor.”
The entire squad rallied behind Chloe in unanimous support. Tyler Reed stepped up, his electric smile flashing. “Let’s build a routine they’ll never forget, Captain.”
