Chapter 3

Dumping My Quarterback After I Slimmed Down 3 of 6

The 48-degree autumn chill bit into exposed skin. Thick morning mist hung over the bleachers of the Oakridge Rubberized Track. The sharp rhythm of running shoes slapping wet rubber—*slap-thud-drive*—cut through the pre-dawn darkness, followed by hot plumes of exhaled breath.

It was Tuesday, September 9, week two of Chloe’s 60-day training protocol. She was down to 230 pounds, having shed ten pounds of systemic bloat and water. Wearing charcoal high-waisted leggings and a compression long-sleeve, she charged up the final forty yards of “The Beast,” a brutal 45-degree asphalt conditioning hill. Her legs burned like molten lead with lactic acid, but her biomechanics remained clinical: 90-degree arm drive, active ankle dorsiflexion, forefoot striking directly beneath her center of mass to eliminate the deceleration brake.

She reached the asphalt summit. She didn’t collapse. She placed her hands on her iliac crests, maintaining an upright torso to maximize diaphragmatic expansion, breathing in a strict 3:2 nasal-diaphragmatic cadence. Her resting pulse was dropping; fast-twitch recruitment was firing online.

A metallic *click* of a Seiko digital stopwatch pierced the fog.

Tyler Reed detached from the stadium railing. He wore minimalist black compression gear, his intense gray eyes locked on her form. “Five point eight-four seconds on rep six,” he said, tossing a matte-black stainless insulated bottle.

The bottle cut an arc through the pre-dawn air. Chloe snatched it three inches from her sternum with one hand.

“Most athletes carrying extra mass heel-strike and trash their patellar tendons,” Tyler observed, jumping down to the track. “You run like a four-hundred-meter hurdler who knows exactly where her hips are in space. Who taught you that turnover, Mitchell?”

Chloe twisted the cap. Cold electrolyte water hit the back of her dry throat. “Nobody taught me. I remembered it. Rep seven starts in thirty seconds.”

Tyler’s gray eyes lit up with fierce athletic respect. He dropped his stopwatch and lined up beside her.

By 5:45 AM, they stood outside the Vance Strength & Conditioning Center. The private varsity weight room was strictly off-limits, but Tyler scanned his captain keycard, bypassing the locked glass doors.

The heavy metallic tang of cast-iron plates and magnesium chalk dust filled the air, mingling with the low hum of industrial ceiling fans. Tyler led Chloe past the standard selectorized machines, walking straight to the championship Eleiko Olympic lifting platforms.

Chloe loaded 135 pounds onto the barbell. She gripped the rough knurling, racking the bar across her anterior deltoids in a flawless front-rack position, elbows parallel to the solid oak floor. Tyler spotted her closely, his intense body heat radiating from directly behind her, his hands hovering inches from her ribs.

Chloe dropped into a rock-solid, below-parallel front squat. Vertical torso. Zero hip shift. She exploded upward with sharp bar velocity, her thoracic extension immaculate.

Tyler racked the barbell, stunned by her core stability and mobility.

Chloe wiped chalk from her palms. “You have a three-degree lateral hip drop when you clear hurdle four on your two-hundred-meter,” she said flatly. “Your internal rotation is decelerating your split time. I can fix it.”

She offered the diagnostic trade in exchange for unhindered 5:00 AM access to the strength center. Tyler extended his hand. They sealed the pact with an iron grip. She packed her black-and-blue Moleskine notebook into her gym bag and walked out.

At 11:30 AM, the transition bell clanged through the Main Academic Hallway outside the Science Wing. Locker doors banged shut amidst the greasy aroma of cafeteria cheese pizza.

Everett Hayes stepped into the center aisle, cutting Chloe off by locker #112. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot. He slammed his palm against the locker door beside her ear, shoving a physics quiz with a red **38% (F)** directly into her face. He was facing NCAA red-flag suspension and was frantic to find someone to blame.

“Henderson failed me!” Everett screamed. “You fix my grade portal tonight, or I have my dad strip your athletic waivers! You write my makeup exam at my house, or you’re off the mats for good!”

He reached out to shove Chloe against the lockers. Before his fingers could connect, a hand wrapped in black athletic tape clamped onto Everett’s wrist.

Tyler Reed applied a bone-crushing radial nerve compression. Everett’s knees buckled two inches as Tyler effortlessly shoved him back into the center aisle. The surrounding students froze in dead silence.

“Take your hand off her before I snap your wrist, Hayes,” Tyler said, his voice an ice-cold warning.

Chloe stepped forward with quiet, freezing authority. She looked at Everett’s panicked face. “Your father owns a car dealership, not the school board,” she stated plainly. “Every paper I ever wrote for you has timestamped IP metadata. One more threat, and the dossier goes on the athletic director’s desk. Walk away, Everett. While you still have a jersey.”

Everett retreated in total humiliation. As he slunk away, he pulled out his phone, rapidly texting Selina to orchestrate the theft of Chloe’s Moleskine notebook during 6th period gym.

Tyler watched him go, then glanced at Chloe. “The Ohio State Division I track and gymnastics scout is arriving in three weeks. Don’t lose focus.”
