Chapter 4

Dumping My Quarterback After I Slimmed Down 4 of 6

The blinding gym lighting reflected off the polished maple hardwood of the Gold Arena. The sharp scent of aerosol hairspray, chalk, and wintergreen analgesic balm filled the Main Practice Floor. It was Friday, October 3, 3:15 PM—Week 4 of Chloe’s transformation. Fifty varsity athletes milled around, murmuring in low voices as regional college scout Coach Miller sat at the scorer’s table beside Coach Briggs, evaluating the Oakridge roster.

Selina Vance stood in the center of the mat wearing a customized gold warm-up jacket. She clutched Chloe’s stolen black-and-blue Moleskine notebook tightly behind her back, flashing a brilliant, fake smile at the scout. She announced that Oakridge cheer would demonstrate an “original, collegiate-level stunt sequence” called the Valkyrie Cascade.

The double doors swung wide. The entire gym dropped into a sudden acoustic silence.

Chloe Mitchell walked in. She wore high-waisted black compression leggings and an Oakridge cross-training cropped tank. She was down 40 pounds, standing at 200 pounds of pure, sculpted power. Her deltoids were defined, her 30-inch waist tapered, her powerful fast-twitch legs moving with predatory grace. Her emerald eyes were striking, her hair pulled into a crisp competition ponytail.

The gym froze. Football players stopped mid-set in the adjacent viewing area. Everett Hayes dropped his stainless shaker cup on the floor, staring at Chloe’s new silhouette in total shock. Selina’s smile vanished instantly, her acrylic nails digging into the stolen notebook’s leather cover. Chloe ignored all of them, stepping onto the track to begin her dynamic hip-opener drills. Her vertical leap was fully restored to 28 inches; she was a weapon ready to fire.

At 3:35 PM, the nervous eight-count rang out across the center spring floor: *”1-2-3-4, 5-6-7-8!”*

The heavy squeak of cheer shoes compressing spring mats echoed through the arena. Selina forced freshman flyer Maya Lin—a terrified 15-year-old weighing 102 lbs—into a high-altitude 360-degree kick-full basket toss. But Selina had ignored the warning note written on page 14 of Chloe’s stolen notebook: *BASES MUST COUNTER-ROTATE 15 DEGREES INWARD ON BEAT 4 TO CANCEL CENTRIFUGAL DRIFT.*

The bases launched Maya fifteen feet into the air. Without the base counter-rotation, centrifugal torque hijacked Maya’s momentum. She hit the apex, initiated her kick-twist, and drifted three yards horizontally off the blue vinyl mat, hurling directly toward the unpadded concrete border at twenty miles per hour.

Maya screamed in terror.

Selina, standing in the backspot position, saw the trajectory break. Instead of planting her feet and driving under the drop zone to protect her flyer, Selina panicked and leaped frantically backward to save herself.

Coach Briggs screamed into her whistle from the scorer’s table twenty yards away, but it was too late. Maya was falling head-first, a fraction of a second from a fatal cervical spine impact.

Chloe didn’t think. Her nervous system fired on pure spinal reflex.

The concussive thud of her forefoot sprint dug into the hardwood. She accelerated across thirty yards in under 2.9 seconds. She launched into a low horizontal dive along the floor seam, the burning friction of her compression leggings sliding across the polished polyurethane. She slid directly beneath Maya, wrapping both muscular forearms around the freshman’s cervical spine and ribs in a rigid cervical cradle.

The 800-pound kinetic impact slammed into Chloe’s chest. She didn’t fight the floor. She rolled through a 360-degree judo breakfall, absorbing the shock across her back and shoulders, popping back onto her feet before the acoustic crack of the fall even cleared the metal rafters. Maya was shaking violently but completely unbruised.

Chloe didn’t pause. She channeled the residual momentum directly into an explosive forward sprint onto the spring floor. She hurdled into a thunderous round-off, snapped a whip-fast back handspring, and exploded six feet into the air. She executed a razor-straight, hollow-body layout with pointed toes, sticking the landing dead center on the mat with zero heel bounce.

The entire gym erupted into deafening cheers.

Visiting scout Coach Miller leaped to his feet, clapping furiously. Coach Briggs rushed onto the mat, verifying Maya was safe. She looked at Chloe, her eyes blazing with respect. Briggs turned to the master board, uncapped a red marker, and wrote a bold **10.0 / PERFECT STUNT DEFENSE & MASTERY** next to Chloe’s name, instantly assigning her to the Varsity Homecoming Showcase.

Tyler Reed stepped out from the tunnel, meeting Chloe’s eyes with profound respect. Selina, terrified and exposed, fled to the locker room to hide the stolen notebook in locker #44, completely unaware of the overhead security camera tracking her every move.
