Chapter 2

Dumping My Quarterback After I Slimmed Down 2 of 6

The warm, heavy scent of polyurethane floor seal, adhesive pre-wrap, and citrus mat disinfectant filled the Gold Arena. Blinding overhead halogen floodlights glared down on the center floor. Above, the electric-blue glow of the 20-foot arena scoreboard flashed `VARSITY ATHLETIC ASSESSMENT // SCALE FEED ACTIVE`. The rhythmic squeak of cheer soles on hardwood echoed against the arrogant laughter of twenty varsity football players lounging in the front bleachers.

Selina Vance commanded the center mat with a rhinestone clipboard. She had routed a heavy-duty stainless steel digital floor scale directly to the arena scoreboard, an engineered trap designed for maximum public humiliation. Two freshman JV flyers stepped onto the scale, blushing furiously as their weights—108 lbs, 114 lbs—flashed in high-definition across the giant screen.

Everett Hayes reclined in the front row, his elbow resting casually on his knee, smirking at his teammates. He expected Chloe to come crying for his protection after the morning’s confrontation. Selina lifted her wireless Shure microphone, tapping the acrylic head with a manicured nail. The amplified thump bounced off the state title banners.

“Next up—Chloe Mitchell,” Selina announced, her voice dripping with venomous theatricality over the PA.

The gym dropped into dead silence, followed by scattered jeers and whistles from the football bench.

Chloe emerged from the tunnel. She wore fitted black athletic leggings and an Oakridge cross-training tee, her hair tied tight. Her posture was immaculate—retracted scapulae, level chin, rhythmic heel-toe cadence. She carried 240 pounds, but her balance was solid, her centered mass moving like an incoming storm. Her resting pulse remained steady at 68 beats per minute. From the upper 200-meter indoor mezzanine track, Tyler Reed tracked her center of gravity and cadence with intense focus.

Chloe didn’t hurry. Her heel-to-toe strike was measured. When she reached the blue vinyl mat, her right sneaker caught the black rubber sleeve of the HDMI transmission line running to the scorer’s console. With a crisp three-inch lateral flick of the peroneus longus, she unseated the cable. The connector popped. Twenty feet of high-definition display on the giant scoreboard flickered, dying instantly into dead grey static.

Selina lunges to pull the microphone back to her chest, her mouth opening to scream.

Chloe closed the two-foot gap between them. She stepped forward into Selina’s personal space, dropping her shoulder two inches to close off Selina’s hip line. With two fingers, Chloe gripped the aluminum shaft of the Shure wireless mic just beneath the windscreen, applying direct pressure to the radial nerve groove. Selina’s manicured grip released instantly.

Chloe brought the grille to her lips.

“Your bases are taking eight hundred pounds of kinetic shock on locked elbows,” Chloe said. Her voice was calm, resonant, and entirely stripped of anger, filling every corner of the arena without straining. “You rank forty-second in the state because you catch basket tosses like amateurs. And your left ankle pronates four degrees on every cradle dismount. That isn’t varsity choreography, Selina. That’s a chronic peroneus brevis weakness. It’s an ATFL tear waiting for a date.”

The shocked silence of the football players was absolute. Coach Evelyn Briggs, sitting at the scorer’s table, widened her eyes in sudden realization of the truth behind the brutal forensic breakdown. The 12-year veteran and former NCAA champion saw the elite professional coach standing where a bullied teenager used to be.

Selina screamed at the scorer’s table, her face flushing crimson. She demanded Chloe’s immediate expulsion, shrieking about her father’s $80,000 mat donation. Several cheer bases looked down at their shoes in shame, recognizing Chloe had accurately described the chronic shoulder agony they suffered daily.

Chloe pulled a folded printout from her pocket. The crisp rustle of the official Ohio High School Athletic Association laminated rulebook cut through the tension.

“Article 4, Section B,” Chloe stated, looking Coach Briggs dead in the eye. “Any full-time student maintains the right to issue an official Mat Challenge for an active varsity spot through certified technical scoring. You cannot cut me without a scored tryout, Coach.”

Coach Briggs stood up. The ear-splitting shriek of her Fox 40 metal whistle echoed off the high-ceiling steel girders. She stepped onto the blue mat, her eyes shining with fierce professional respect.

“Challenge recognized,” Coach Briggs declared. “Six weeks from today, before the Homecoming Pep Rally. Open mat. Scored on tumbling difficulty, stunt stability, and routine execution.”

Selina turned in blind fury and kicked a 10-pound vinyl medicine ball against the equipment rack. An audible gasp of pain escaped her lips. She clutched her left ankle, hobbling toward the locker room, the exact injury mechanism Chloe predicted flaring in real time.

Tyler Reed watched from the upper mezzanine railing, a razor-sharp smirk of respect on his face. Chloe handed the microphone back to Coach Briggs with a curt nod. She retrieved her black-and-blue Moleskine notebook, opening it to begin writing her 60-day protocol. The reckoning had begun.
