Chapter 6: The Unseen Marksman
The secure private penthouse suite on the eighty-second floor of the Executive Heights Residence was deathly quiet, save for the soft patter of rain against the bulletproof panoramic glass overlooking the sprawling neon sprawl of Capital City.
Down in the streets, police cruisers, tactical assault vans, and Secret Service convoys with flashing red-and-blue strobes continued to cordon off the Ardent Celestial Hotel. The national media was in an absolute frenzy. Breaking news chyrons declared: *“MIRACULOUS ESCAPE: PRESIDENT’S DAUGHTER SURVIVES BALLROOM ASSASSINATION AMBUSH — THREE ELITE MERCENARIES ELIMINATED BY UNIDENTIFIED PHANTOM SNIPER.”*
Inside the penthouse living room, Jake Vance was stretched out horizontally across a cream Italian leather sofa, his arms folded behind his head, his worn combat boots resting unceremoniously on a crystal coffee table. His eyes were closed, his breathing slow and even, apparently sleeping off the effects of the evening’s chaos like an unbothered vagrant who had just enjoyed a free night in a five-star hotel.
Standing a few feet away, Evelyn Pierce watched him in silence.
She had changed out of her ruined, plaster-dusted emerald evening gown into a simple black silk robe, her long chestnut hair falling freely over her shoulders. Her face was pale, her amber eyes bright with an overwhelming mixture of shock, confusion, and profound revelation.
On the mahogany sideboard lay Jake’s damp, rented tuxedo jacket, which he had carelessly tossed aside upon entering the suite.
Evelyn walked slowly toward the jacket, her bare feet silent against the plush wool rug. Her hands trembled slightly as her fingers reached into the interior breast pocket.
Her fingertips brushed against cold, heavy metal.
She pulled out a small, velvet-lined leather pouch. Inside rested a single, unspent custom 9mm match-grade cartridge—its brass casing polished to a mirror finish, its bullet tip machined from a proprietary tungsten-polymer composite stamped with the micro-serial code *SHADOW-01*.
Beside the pouch was a tarnished, battle-worn military dog tag hanging from a blackened steel ball chain.
Evelyn held the dog tag up to the soft ambient lamplight.
Engraved across the titanium surface were the national crest of the Republic, a cluster of five silver battle stars, and a single callsign stamped in bold, unyielding letters:
**BULLSEYE — COMMANDER, SPECIAL RECONNAISSANCE DIVISION.**
Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs.
As the President’s chief cybersecurity and strategic intelligence analyst, Evelyn possessed Level-5 classified security clearance. She had read the redacted ghost files. She knew the legend.
Five years ago, during the Border War of the Northern Ridge, an entire infantry battalion of four hundred soldiers had been pinned down in a canyon by a mechanized artillery brigade. For seventy-two hours, a single ghost marksman positioned four kilometers away had systematically neutralized every enemy artillery commander, forward observer, and tank gunner with impossible, god-tier precision—breaking the siege without suffering a single friendly casualty.
The military called him the Guardian of the Republic.
The underworld called him the Reaper’s Eye.
His official callsign was Bullseye.
Three years ago, the files claimed Bullseye had turned traitor in Zurich and died in an alpine explosion.
Evelyn looked up from the dog tag to the man lying on the sofa.
The rough stubble. The faded scars crisscrossing his knuckles and neck. The terrifying, ice-cold calmness he had displayed behind that mahogany bar while bullets pulverized the marble around them. The impossible angle of the three dead assassins.
It wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t luck.
Her drunken, homeless husband—the man high society had sneered at, the man Damian Vance had poured red wine over—was the most lethal living weapon in the history of the Republic.
“If you stare at a piece of stamped tin for too long, Princess, you’ll go blind,” a deep, quiet voice drawled from the sofa.
Evelyn jumped, her heart leaping into her throat.
Jake had opened his eyes. He hadn’t moved a muscle, but his piercing ice-blue gaze was fixed squarely upon her, cutting through the dim room with crystal-clear lucidity. There wasn’t a trace of sleep or alcohol in his voice.
Evelyn walked toward him, holding up the dog tag between her trembling fingers.
“Bullseye,” she whispered, her voice a mix of awe and fierce demand. “You’re Commander Jake Vance. The ghost of the Shadow Division.”
Jake slowly sat up, resting his forearms on his knees. The lazy smirk on his face faded, replaced by a quiet, somber gravity that seemed to fill the entire penthouse.
“That name belongs to a dead man, Evelyn,” Jake said softly. “The man who wore that tag lost his wife, his squad, and his honor three years ago in a snowstorm in Zurich. What’s sitting on your sofa right now is just a hunter closing in on his prey.”
“My father knew all along, didn’t he?” Evelyn asked, stepping closer until she stood right beside the sofa. “The fake marriage… the alleyway in District 9… it was never about protecting his administration’s public image. He brought you back because Damian is planning a military coup, and you are the only one who can stop it.”
“Damian didn’t just order the coup, Evelyn,” Jake said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and cold it made the air in the room feel like dry ice. “Three years ago in Zurich, my wife Elena was eight months pregnant with our daughter. Damian was the one who supplied the custom armor-piercing bullets that took her life. He thought burying my name would keep him safe on his golden throne.”
Jake stood up to his full six-foot-two height. For the first time, Evelyn saw the unbroken, towering presence of a commander—broad shoulders, unyielding posture, and eyes that held the weight of a thousand silent battlefields.
“Damian wants this city,” Jake said, looking out through the panoramic glass at the glowing skyline of Capital City. “He wants your father’s seat, he wants the defense codes, and he thinks he can kill anyone who stands in his way.”
Jake turned back to Evelyn, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse race.
“Tomorrow morning, Damian will realize that his snipers failed. He will escalate the attack. But as long as you wear that ring and stay behind my trigger, no bullet in this city will ever touch you. That is my oath.”
Evelyn looked at the battle-worn dog tag in her hand, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had shielded her with his own body without a second thought. The anger, resentment, and humiliation that had burned inside her since morning dissolved entirely, replaced by an overwhelming sense of safety and a profound, electric connection she had never felt with anyone before.
Slowly, Evelyn closed her fingers around the dog tag, stepping forward until she was inches away from him.
“Then let’s finish this together, Commander,” Evelyn said softly, her amber eyes shining with resolute determination. “Let’s show my brother what happens when you awaken a sleeping legend.”
Outside, lightning flashed across the midnight sky over Capital City, illuminating the shadows of the metropolis as the war for the Republic officially began.
