Chapter 5: Bullets and Broken Glass

The Rage of a Sniper Hero: Return of Bullseye 5 of 6

*Shatter.*

The high-tensile reinforced glass of the ballroom’s grand ceiling dome did not merely crack—it detonated into thousands of razor-sharp crystal shards as a heavy-caliber armor-piercing round tore through the roof.

In the microsecond before the projectile struck, Jake Vance moved with superhuman speed. Grabbing Evelyn Pierce around the waist, he swept her off her feet, twisting his body mid-air to shield her with his own broad back as they crashed heavily behind the solid, two-hundred-pound mahogany bar counter.

*THWACK.*

The sniper bullet slammed into the exact square of marble flooring where Evelyn had been standing half a heartbeat earlier, pulverizing the stone into a spray of white powder and leaving a smoldering, three-inch crater.

A beat of absolute silence hung in the room before the grand Austrian crystal chandelier snapped from its iron cables, crashing down into the central champagne pyramid.

Pandemonium detonated across the ballroom.

Screams of unbridled terror echoed under the high ceiling as three hundred elite guests abandoned their champagne flutes, diamonds, and dignity, trampling over one another in a desperate stampede toward the service exits. Damian Vance’s private security guards immediately drew their concealed submachine guns, but instead of engaging the rooftop shooters, they formed an impenetrable defensive ring around Damian, escorting him toward the VIP elevator while ignoring the screaming civilians.

“Assassins! Roof level!” Secret Service agents shouted, drawing their sidearms and returning blind fire through the shattered dome.

Behind the mahogany bar, Evelyn lay trembling against Jake’s chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Dust and powdered plaster covered her emerald gown, but she was completely unhurt. Looking up, she expected to see her vagrant husband curled in a fetal ball of terror.

Instead, what she saw made her breath catch in her throat.

Jake was on one knee, completely motionless, breathing in slow, rhythmic four-second intervals. All traces of his drunken slur and slouching posture had vanished into thin air. His face was an unreadable mask of icy calculation, his ice-blue eyes burning with the terrifying focus of an apex predator at the moment of the kill.

From the concealed inner lining of his rental tuxedo jacket, Jake drew a specialized, custom-machined tactical sidearm—a suppressed titanium 9mm pistol equipped with match-grade sub-sonic rounds.

“Jake… what is that?” Evelyn whispered, her voice shaking. “Who are you?”

“Stay down, Princess,” Jake murmured, his voice calm, level, and utterly commanding. “Don’t look up.”

Jake didn’t blind-fire through the ceiling. He didn’t waste a single bullet.

In his left hand, he held a large, curved shard of the shattered lead-crystal champagne flute. Angling the glass shard at exactly forty-three degrees above the edge of the bar counter, Jake used the optical refraction of the crystal to mirror the rain-swept darkness outside the dome.

Through the prism of glass, Jake’s mind mapped the ballistics in instantaneous, mathematical perfection:

*Target One: North tower ledge. Distance: 340 meters. Elevation: +28 degrees. Wind: 14 knots West-North-West. Mirage index: Moderate rain deflection.*
*Target Two: Central communications pylon. Distance: 365 meters. Elevation: +31 degrees. Holding Barrett .50 BMG rifle.*
*Target Three: South ventilation shaft. Distance: 320 meters. Spotter with laser designator.*

To an ordinary marksman, hitting a sniper three hundred and fifty meters away in heavy rain through a ruptured skylight with a short-barrel pistol was a physical impossibility.

To Bullseye, it was standard procedure.

Jake took a deep breath, expanded his diaphragm, and held the exhale at the bottom of the lung cycle. His pulse dropped to an astonishing forty-two beats per minute.

He rose from behind the bar by three inches—just enough to clear the sightline.

*Phfft.*

The suppressed sidearm coughed with a soft, barely audible pneumatic hiss. The match-grade bullet arced through the torrential downpour outside, guided by an impossible ballistic trajectory, and passed cleanly through the four-inch objective lens of Target One’s sniper scope—penetrating the assassin’s right eye and detonating inside the skull. The sniper dropped his rifle and plummeted thirty stories into the dark alley below.

*Phfft.*

Before the second sniper could register the loss of his teammate, Jake adjusted his wrist angle by two millimeters, accounting for the crosswind shear off the building’s facade. The second sub-sonic round entered the neck of Target Two, severing the carotid artery instantly.

*Phfft.*

The third bullet struck the spotter directly between the eyebrows as he reached for his emergency flare.

Three shots. Three seconds. Three dead elite Black Viper assassins.

Jake smoothly retracted his arm beneath the counter, holstered the suppressed weapon inside his jacket, and grabbed a half-empty bottle of bourbon from the floor, splashing a few drops over his shirt to re-establish the pungent aroma of liquor.

By the time heavily armed SWAT tactical units and Director Marcus Cole breached the ballroom doors with ballistic shields, Jake was slumped backward against the bar shelves, clutching the bottle with a wide-eyed, terrified expression on his face.

“All clear! Perimeters secured!” SWAT officers shouted, clearing the room.

Director Cole rushed behind the bar, his eyes instantly scanning Evelyn for injuries before locking onto Jake. Cole’s gaze flickered to the shattered skylight above, then down to Jake’s calm, knowing eyes. Cole swallowed hard, subtly lowering his weapon.

“Miss Pierce! Are you injured?” Cole asked loudly.

“I’m… I’m fine,” Evelyn stammered, her voice shaking as she allowed Cole to help her to her feet. Her gaze immediately turned to Jake, who was stumbling up, wiping his forehead with a trembling hand and muttering incoherent complaints about broken champagne bottles.

“What happened to the shooters on the roof?” Evelyn asked, looking up at the rain pouring through the shattered glass dome.

A SWAT tactical communications officer sprinted across the ballroom, his face pale with shock.

“Director Cole! Sniper containment teams just reached the opposing communications tower! All three hostile snipers are neutralized!”

“Neutralized?” Cole asked, keeping his expression neutral. “By who?”

“That’s the impossible part, sir,” the officer replied, his voice laced with pure disbelief. “All three snipers were killed by precision headshots through their own rifle optics from inside this ballroom… with a sub-sonic handgun caliber. The ballistics team says it’s physically impossible. They’re calling it a ghost shot.”

Evelyn stood frozen in the middle of the ruined ballroom.

Her heart pounded as her eyes slowly moved from the shattered ceiling down to her disheveled, stumbling husband, who was currently arguing with a waiter over a spilled napkin.

She remembered the icy stillness in his eyes, the suppressed weapon hidden beneath his jacket, and the terrifying, god-like precision of his breathing.

*A ghost shot.*

Evelyn stared at Jake Vance, a sudden, earth-shattering realization dawning in her mind. Her husband wasn’t a worthless drunk.

He was the ghost.
