Chapter 3: The Mismatched Union

The Rage of a Sniper Hero: Return of Bullseye 3 of 6

The morning sun over District 1 did little to warm the crisp autumn air as Evelyn Pierce stepped out of her armored Mercedes limousine in front of the City Central Registry Office.

Dressed in a tailored cream-white Chanel suit with sharp lapels, her long chestnut hair swept back in an elegant French twist, Evelyn was the picture of aristocratic poise and razor-sharp intellect. As the daughter of the President and a top cybersecurity strategist in her own right, her every movement commanded respect. But this morning, beneath her dark designer sunglasses, her amber eyes burned with suppressed fury and humiliation.

When her father had called her late last night, ordering her to report to the registry for an emergency contractual marriage to protect the administration from an impending threat, she had expected a hardened, impeccably groomed Secret Service officer—someone dignified, capable, and presentable to the ravenous media.

Instead, as she entered the private judicial chamber on the third floor, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Slumped lazily in a plush velvet armchair beside the mahogany registrar’s desk was Jake Vance.

He hadn’t bothered to change out of his faded, oil-smudged denim jeans or his scuffed combat boots. His worn flannel shirt was half-unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a glimpse of tanned, battle-scarred collarbone beneath rough dark stubble. He held a takeaway paper cup of black coffee in one hand, while his other arm was draped casually over the chair back, looking for all the world like a drifter who had wandered in to escape the autumn chill.

“Is this some kind of sick joke?” Evelyn demanded, her voice trembling with indignant outrage as she turned to Director Marcus Cole, who stood silently near the doorway. “Director Cole, you brought me a homeless drunk from the gutter to be my husband?”

Jake took a slow sip of his black coffee, not even bothering to sit up straight. His ice-blue eyes flickered up, taking in her immaculate Chanel suit, the faint scent of French lavender perfume, and the rigid tension in her shoulders.

“Nice suit, Miss Pierce,” Jake said in a slow, drawling rasp. “Though if you’re trying to blend into a crowd, bright cream isn’t exactly low-profile. A decent marksman from the clocktower across the street could put a crosshair on your chest before you finish walking up the steps.”

Evelyn’s jaw clenched. She marched across the parquet floor, her high heels clicking sharply against the polished wood until she stood directly in front of him, looking down with icy disdain.

“Listen to me, whoever you are,” Evelyn hissed, leaning in so the registrar couldn’t hear. “I don’t know what kind of money my father offered to pull you out of the dive bars in District 9, but let’s establish some basic rules right now. This is a business arrangement on paper only. You will not touch me. You will not speak to my friends. You will stay in the guest quarters of my private estate, keep your mouth shut, and stay out of my way. Do you understand?”

Jake looked at her, entirely unbothered by her fury. A faint, amused smirk touched the corner of his lips.

“Don’t worry, Princess,” Jake murmured, setting his coffee cup down with a light thud. “I have no interest in your high-society tea parties or your trust fund. Just keep your head down when the shooting starts, and we’ll get along fine.”

“The shooting?” Evelyn scoffed, though an involuntary chill ran down her spine at the absolute, chilling certainty in his voice. “The only danger here is the utter humiliation of my family’s name when the press discovers who I just married.”

“Miss Pierce, Mr. Vance,” the elderly Chief Magistrate interrupted politely, clearing his throat and sliding a thick gold-embossed ledger across the desk. “If you are ready, please place your signatures on lines one and two.”

Evelyn grabbed the gold fountain pen as if it were a dagger. With aggressive, decisive strokes, she signed her name: *Evelyn Victoria Pierce*.

Jake casually took the pen from her fingers, his rough, heavily callused skin brushing against her soft hand for a fleeting second. Evelyn noticed, with a sudden pang of surprise, that despite his disheveled clothes and nonchalant demeanor, his grip was as steady as forged iron. There was not a trace of a tremor in his hand. With a quick, smooth motion, he signed: *Jake Vance*.

“By the power vested in me by the State, I declare you legally married under the Sovereign Union Act,” the magistrate intoned, stamping the document with the crimson state seal.

“Wonderful,” Evelyn snapped coldly, turning on her heel and marching toward the exit. “Let’s get this nightmare over with.”

“Hold up, Princess,” Jake called out lazily, standing up and stretching his broad shoulders.

“What now?” Evelyn turned back, exasperated.

Jake walked to the large arched window overlooking the registry plaza, pulling aside the heavy velvet drape by a fraction of an inch. His eyes flickered across the street with microscopic precision.

“Black sedan with tinted windows parked by the fire hydrant: two surveillance operatives running directional microphones,” Jake said casually, as if remarking on the weather. “Gray delivery van at the corner: three telephoto lens cameras with high-speed satellite transmitters. And the blonde woman pretending to read a newspaper by the statue is a freelance gossip columnist on Damian Vance’s personal payroll.”

Evelyn froze. She stepped toward the window, peering out through the glass. Sure enough, the vehicles and the woman were exactly where he had described, their attention fixed on the building’s main entrance.

“How did you…?” Evelyn began, looking at Jake with sudden suspicion.

“Just basic street smarts, Princess,” Jake replied with a shrug, pulling up the collar of his worn jacket. “Damian wanted to make sure your sudden wedding became the top headline in the country before lunch. If we go out the front, they get their circus.”

“Then we take the underground garage exit,” Evelyn said, adjusting her sunglasses.

“No,” Jake countered, a dangerous, razor-sharp glint flashing in his ice-blue eyes. “If you run to the garage, Damian knows you’re ashamed and hiding something. If you want him to believe this marriage is real—if you want to catch him off guard—you walk out the front door with your head held high.”

Before Evelyn could protest, Jake stepped beside her, offering his arm with an exaggerated, mock-courteous bow.

“Shall we give the vultures their photo op, Mrs. Vance?”

Evelyn glared at him, furious at his arrogance yet unable to deny the undeniable tactical logic in his words. Gritting her teeth, she placed her manicured hand onto the rough fabric of his sleeve.

As the heavy oak double doors of the registry swung open, the autumn morning erupted into a blinding storm of camera flashes and shouting journalists.

*”Miss Pierce! Is it true you just married a homeless man from District 9?”*
*”Is this a protest against your father’s administration?”*
*”Damian Vance just announced the Vance Defense Gala tonight—will you be bringing your new husband?”*

Flanked by the flashing strobes and roaring crowd, Evelyn felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. But as she gripped the arm of the man beside her, she felt the rock-solid, immovable strength of a fortress. Jake Vance strolled down the marble steps with a calm, lazy smirk on his face, waving cheerfully at the cameras as if he owned the entire city.
