Chapter 4: The Sovereign Gala Ambush

The Rage of a Sniper Hero: Return of Bullseye 4 of 6

The Sovereign Grand Ballroom at the top of the Ardent Celestial Hotel in District 1 was the pinnacle of high-society decadence. Under towering vaulted ceilings trimmed in twenty-four-karat gold leaf, three massive Austrian crystal chandeliers cast a warm, glittering luminescence over three hundred of the nation’s wealthiest oligarchs, foreign diplomats, defense ministers, and media moguls.

Every woman in attendance wore haute couture silk and cascading diamond necklaces; every man wore bespoke velvet or midnight-blue tuxedos.

And then, walking through the gilded double doors on the arm of Evelyn Pierce, was Jake Vance.

Evelyn looked breathtaking in an emerald-green silk backless gown that accentuated her graceful curves, her dark chestnut hair styled in soft waves over one bare shoulder. Beside her, Jake was dressed in a cheap, rented black tuxedo that was visibly half a size too broad in the shoulders, his collar unbuttoned without a bow tie, and his worn combat boots polished just enough to pass the doorman’s inspection. He held a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon as if it were a ten-dollar bottle of tap beer, casually surveying the room with half-closed, bored eyes.

The moment they stepped onto the marble floor, the string quartet seemed to falter. Whispers spread through the ballroom like wildfire.

*”Look at him… is that really the drifter Evelyn married?”*
*”A total disgrace to the Pierce name. Alexander Pierce must be losing his mind to allow this.”*
*”He looks like he slept in an alley this morning!”*

Evelyn’s knuckles turned white around her gold clutch. She leaned into Jake, her smile fixed and rigid for the cameras. “Everyone is staring at us, Jake. Try not to embarrass me more than you already have.”

“Let them stare, Princess,” Jake murmured under his breath, taking a slow sip of champagne. “A loud crowd is the best noise floor. Keeps the ears focused on what actually matters.”

“And what matters?”

“The ventilation duct in the east gallery is blowing at twelve knots. The high-altitude fog outside is reducing rooftop visibility to four hundred meters,” Jake replied smoothly, his tone conversational. “And the four private security guards standing near the champagne fountain are carrying concealed submachine guns beneath their jackets instead of standard sidearms. Whoever organized this party isn’t just serving caviar.”

Before Evelyn could process his words, a loud, mocking laugh cut through the ambient chatter.

Parting the crowd with the effortless arrogance of an untouchable prince came Damian Vance.

At thirty-three, Damian was the undisputed golden boy of Capital City’s elite. His slicked-back jet-black hair was flawless, his Italian silk tuxedo tailored to perfection, and a six-figure Patek Philippe chronometer gleamed beneath his French cuffs. Behind him followed an entourage of sycophantic defense executives and smiling socialites.

“Evelyn, my darling!” Damian exclaimed, holding out his hands in theatrical delight. “When the tabloids broke the news this morning, I couldn’t believe it. I thought you had better taste than to dig through the city dump for a wedding date.”

Damian turned his gaze onto Jake, his handsome face contorting into a sneer of pure, venomous satisfaction.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t my dear, worthless half-brother,” Damian said loudly, ensuring every aristocrat within fifty feet could hear every word. “I wondered what rock you crawled under after you dishonored our father’s name and got yourself kicked out of the service. I see you’ve moved up in the world from drinking industrial methanol in District 9 to leeching off the President’s daughter.”

Jake took another slow sip of champagne, looking Damian up and down with calm, unblinking indifference. “You still talk too much, Damian. Father always said your mouth was ten times bigger than your spine.”

Damian’s smile tightened into a vicious snarl. He stepped forward until he was mere inches from Jake, his eyes flashing with suppressed malice.

“Our father is dead, Jake. And everything he built—Vance Defense Industries, our family estates, the government weapons contracts—belongs to *me*. You are nothing. A nameless, penniless stray.”

Damian deliberately tilted the glass of deep red Cabernet Sauvignon in his hand, pouring the vintage wine straight down over Jake’s polished combat boots. The red liquid splashed across the polished marble, staining Jake’s trousers.

The surrounding socialites erupted into cruel, muffled giggles and polite gasps of amusement.

Evelyn’s eyes flashed with anger. “Damian, that is enough! You are out of line!”

“Just helping my big brother clean his shoes, Evelyn,” Damian laughed, turning away and adjusting his cufflinks. “Enjoy the party, brother. Soak in the luxury while you can… because tomorrow, you might find yourself six feet beneath the dirt.”

Damian walked back toward his inner circle of defense ministers, laughing loudly.

Evelyn quickly turned to Jake, her expression a mix of mortification and genuine concern. “Jake, are you alright? I’m so sorry… he’s a monster.”

Jake didn’t look down at his stained shoes. He didn’t show anger, humiliation, or distress.

Instead, his entire posture had shifted into absolute, lethal stillness. His ice-blue eyes were fixed on the panoramic stained-glass dome sixty feet above the ballroom floor.

Through the faint reflection of the crystal chandelier against the dark window pane, Jake’s acute ballistic vision caught something invisible to the naked human eye: a microscopic, pulsating red infrared laser beam, sweeping silently across the marble floor… and settling directly onto the center of Evelyn Pierce’s chest.

“Jake?” Evelyn asked, noticing his intense focus. “What is it?”

“Princess,” Jake whispered, his voice dropping into a cold, terrifying frequency that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. “In exactly three seconds, drop to the floor and don’t make a sound.”

“What—?”

“Three.”

Jake reached his left hand toward the banquet table, his fingers wrapping around the stem of a heavy, lead-crystal champagne flute.

“Two.”

Outside the glass dome, across the rain-slicked void of three hundred meters between the hotel and the opposing commercial radio tower, three suppressed rifle barrels breached the foggy night air.

“One.”
