Chapter 6: The Miracle of the Sun Melody

Swapped to a Beggar, But He is Apollo 6 of 12

In the days following the incident at the banquet, a deadly plague known as the “Black Miasma” swept through the lower districts of Athens. The disease struck rapidly, causing high fevers and dark sores that no mortal physician could cure.

While the corrupt nobles locked themselves inside their guarded manors, hoarding food and medicine, hundreds of poor citizens suffered in the streets.

In his humble cottage, Alex carved a new lyre from a simple piece of laurel wood.

“Alex,” Irene said softly, tending to a bowl of fresh soup. “The city is falling apart. Even the high priests at the Sun Temple have shut their gates to the sick.”

Alex looked toward the window, his golden gaze piercing through the heavy smog blanketing the city.

“The priests at the temple worship gold and power, not light,” Alex said quietly, standing up with his newly carved lyre. “Come, Irene. It is time the people know who truly rules the sky.”

They walked into the central square of Athens, where dozens of afflicted citizens lay groaning on the stone steps.

When the citizens saw Irene and Alex arrive, several sneered weakly. “What is a beggar bard going to do? Sing us to our graves?”

Alex paid no heed to the complaints. He stood at the base of the fountain and plucked the first string of his laurel lyre.

CLANG—

A note of pure, crystalline resonance expanded outward in a visible wave of golden light.

As Alex sang, his voice carried an ethereal melody that transcended human language. It sounded like the morning breeze sweeping through olive groves, like warm sunlight melting winter glaciers, like the eternal pulse of life itself.

Wherever the wave of golden light touched, the black sores on the sick citizens dissolved into golden dust! Their burning fevers subsided instantly, replaced by boundless vitality and strength!

“A miracle!” a woman cried out, falling to her knees. “My son is healed! The plague is gone!”

“He healed us with his song!”

Hundreds of commoners fell to their knees in awe, weeping tears of joy and reverence around Alex and Irene.

High atop the hill, looking down from the balcony of Vance Manor, Lord Hector and Duke Vane watched the scene through spyglasses.

“This is impossible!” Duke Vane hissed, his face pale with envy and terror. “He is curing the plague with a wooden lyre! The commoners are calling him a savior!”

Lord Hector’s face contorted with jealousy and spite. “Savior? He is a dangerous sorcerer threating our rule! If the people worship him, they will overthrow the nobility!”

Hector slammed his fist onto the stone railing. “We must act tonight, Your Grace. Arrest Irene! If we hold his wife hostage in the iron dungeons beneath the colosseum, the beggar bard will have to kneel before us—or watch her die!”
