Chapter 10: The Price of Arrogance
In the weeks following the divine revelation, the city of Athens underwent a miraculous transformation.
The corrupt nobility was dissolved, and a council of honest citizens was appointed under Irene’s guidance. The vast hoards of gold recovered from Vance Manor and Duke Vane’s vaults were distributed to build hospitals, schools, and public granaries for the poor.
Along the dusty trade roads leading out of Athens, three figures walked in filthy rags.
Cassandra’s bare feet were bruised and bleeding as she dragged a heavy wooden cart containing dry crusts of bread. Lady Cynthia groaned with every step, her back bent from carrying water pails, while Hector stumbled blindly beside them, his mind broken by the loss of his fortune.
“Spare a copper?” Cassandra whimpered, holding out a wooden bowl to a passing merchant carriage.
The merchant glanced down, recognizing the former noble daughter. “Aren’t you the wicked stepsister who tried to murder Lady Irene?”
The merchant spat on the ground and drove past, leaving Cassandra coughing in the dust.
She collapsed on the roadside, weeping tears of bitter regret. “If only… if only I hadn’t been so greedy… I could have had a peaceful life…”
Meanwhile, back in Athens, the citizens celebrated a grand harvest festival.
Irene walked through the bustling markets, greeted with love and flower garlands by every merchant and child. No longer the timid outcast of House Vance, she radiated a quiet majesty and gentle grace that inspired everyone around her.
As dusk fell, Apollo joined her near the fountain where he had once played his laurel lyre. He was dressed in simple white robes trimmed with gold thread, looking handsome beyond mortal words.
“You have brought peace to this city, Irene,” Apollo said gently, taking her hand.
Irene smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. “No, Alex… we brought truth. But tell me… will you return to Mount Olympus now?”
Apollo gazed up at the evening sky, where the first stars were beginning to twinkle around the setting sun.
“I cannot return alone,” Apollo murmured softly, his eyes reflecting the golden sunset. “Mount Olympus has a throne of light, but it has been cold and silent for thousands of years… waiting for its true Queen.”
