Chapter 2: A Cottage in the Shadows

Swapped to a Beggar, But He is Apollo 2 of 12

The rain gradually tapered into a soft mist as Alex led Irene down a winding dirt path on the outskirts of the city. Nestled beneath the shadow of Mount Parnassus stood a small, wooden cottage. Its exterior was weather-worn, but a strange, golden wild ivy wrapped around the roof beams, blooming with vibrant yellow flowers even in the dead of autumn.

“It is not a palace, Irene,” Alex said softly, pushing open the wooden door. “Work has kept me traveling, so I have not kept up luxury. But here, no one will ever insult you.”

Irene stepped inside, bracing herself for damp floors and drafty corners. To her astonishment, the moment she crossed the threshold, a gentle, intoxicating warmth enveloped her. The air smelled of fresh laurel leaves, wild honey, and afternoon sunshine.

Though the furniture was humble—a simple wooden table, two hand-carved chairs, and a bed covered in clean cotton linens—everything radiated a spotless, serene aura. On the windowsill, a bouquet of sun-kissed lilies bloomed brightly despite having no water in their vase.

“It’s… wonderful, Alex,” Irene murmured, tears pricking her eyes. “After living in a manor full of viperish envy, this feels like a sanctuary.”

Alex took her cloak, hanging it carefully by the door. His touch was incredibly gentle, lacking any of the coarse roughness one would expect from a destitute wanderer.

“You must be hungry,” Alex said, walking over to the hearth. With just a gentle gesture of his palm, the dry wood in the fireplace instantly ignited into a warm, crackling golden flame without needing flint or steel.

Irene blinked in surprise. “How did you do that?”

“A minor bard trick,” Alex offered a faint, mysterious smile. “The fire of music warms all things.”

He prepared a simple meal of rye bread, sweet grapes, and honeyed water. Yet as Irene took a bite of the bread, a burst of rich, divine flavor exploded on her palate. It tasted richer than any feast prepared by House Vance’s master chefs, invigorating her tired limbs with newfound energy.

After dinner, the night fell deep and tranquil. Alex retrieved his old wooden lyre and sat by the hearth.

“May I play a tune for my bride?” he asked softly.

Irene nodded, sitting on the bench beside him.

Alex stroked the strings. The lyre was old and scratched, yet the moment his long, elegant fingers plucked the first note, the melody filled the room like liquid sunshine. It was not a mortal song; it sounded like the harmonious movement of distant stars and the gentle warmth of dawn breaking over eternal mountain peaks.

As the music washed over her, all of Irene’s exhaustion, sorrow, and betrayal melted away. She looked at Alex’s profile lit by the hearth fire. Beneath the humble exterior of this wandering bard lay an unmistakable majesty—an aura of supreme nobility that no duke or king in Athens could ever hope to match.

“Alex,” Irene whispered softly as her eyelids grew heavy. “Why did you agree to marry me when Lady Cynthia offered the swap?”

Alex paused his music, his golden eyes gazing into hers with profound tenderness.

“Because a thousand years of wandering the earth is worth a single moment of finding the one pure soul who sees beyond the dust,” he murmured softly. “Sleep well, Irene. As long as the sun shines above, no harm shall ever touch you again.”
