Chapter 3: The Ironvein Labyrinth

I Am the Prey of Three Alphas 3 of 6

The drop-cage plunged into Sector 1 and slammed onto the stone floor with a bone-jarring crash. The rusted iron gates ground open. Pitch-black granite tunnels stretched out, dripping mineral water. The stench of stagnant sulfur, mold, and wet fur filled the confined space.

Goran, a scarred convict wolf, and two heavy death-row convicts cornered Finn in the dark. They wanted emergency supplies off the “unawakened pariah.”

Finn kicked the single striking flint, extinguishing their combat torch and utilizing the pitch darkness. Ducking beneath Goran’s wild swing, Finn drove the steel pommel of his trench dagger into Goran’s solar plexus, swept his leg, and landed a precise heel strike to the neck. Goran crumpled, neutralized in seconds. The wet crunch of the nerve strike echoed in the dark.

The remaining convicts backed away in dread. Finn retrieved the dropped combat torch and slipped into the maze.

Mechanical klaxons wail as hydraulic gates lift, releasing iron-furred stalkers into the sector.

Finn navigated the shifting iron corridors of Sector 3. Two iron-furred stalkers chased him, their metallic hides screeching against the stone walls. Finn’s dagger strikes glanced harmlessly off their dense armor. He hit a dead-end three-way intersection strung with silver tripwires. The hum of automated turrets vibrated in his boots.

The wall intercom crackled to life with Simon Hart’s silky baritone: “Slide left under the second pressure plate in three seconds, little wolf. Mind the silver darts.”

Finn didn’t hesitate. He dove and slid. Whistling silver darts embedded in the stone inches from his boots. An iron portcullis slammed down behind him, crushing the pursuing stalkers into pulp.

Finn reached the Sector 4 blast gate, but red wolfsbane gas began venting through the floor grates.

Inside the Central Sump Chamber, boiling sulfuric pools churned under rusted catwalks. Trapped by rising crimson emergency gas and three massive iron-furred stalkers, Finn prepared for a last stand. Searing lung burn from the wolfsbane mist tore at his throat.

The three-ton reinforced blast gate shuddered. With a deafening screech of tearing steel, the gate was ripped off its hinges by Neal Reyes in half-shifted Behemoth form. Neal roared, leaping across the sump to dismember two stalkers with his bare hands.

Chris Vance dropped from an overhead gantry. His Frost-Iron Claymore sliced through the air, freezing and bisecting the remaining stalker. An overhead silver-shrapnel mine detonated. Chris threw himself over Finn, taking the burning silver blast across his armored back. The smell of burning silver against skin filled the cavern.

An unearthly roar shakes the cavern as Garrison’s mutated shadow-beast drops from the ceiling.

The 12-foot corrupted alchemical monstrosity, loaded with synthetic wolfsbane and bone spikes, knocked Chris and Neal into the crumbling stone pillars. The beast drove a venom-coated claw deep into Finn’s left shoulder.

Synthetic wolfsbane rushed toward Finn’s heart. Liquid fire flooded his veins.

The cracked sunstone fragment on his chest detonated in radiant gold. The royal suppression seal on his spine shattered with an echoing crack. White-gold solar fire manifested around Finn’s hands, solidifying into crystalline Solar Zenith Claws.

In a blinding flash of incandescent speed, Finn drove his solar claws through the monster’s skull and heart, vaporizing it into ash. The air superheated with solar plasma.

Finn collapsed from thermal burnout. Chris and Simon caught him before he hit the boiling water. Neal ripped the twisted titanium collar from the beast’s smoking remains.

Neal wiped the beast’s black bile from his claws and held up the twisted titanium collar to the torchlight, revealing the twin stamps: Arch-Provost Garrison Vance’s personal crest and the coiled scorpion of the Dread-Fang Dominion. Chris’s jaw tightened with murderous ice as his silver claymore dripped with blood:

“This wasn’t a disciplinary trial. It was an execution ordered by my own uncle.”
