Chapter 1: The Scent of the Pariah
The iron gate crashed down behind him with a concussive boom that rattled through the soles of his boots. Freezing mountain rain sheeted across the granite yard, carrying the bitter stench of sulfur and damp wolf fur.
“On your knees, pariah,” Kael sneered, twisting the serrated silver blade into the collar’s seam. Caustic acid-silver flared against Finn’s bare throat. The flesh blistered instantly, sending a hot wave of chemical fire down his collarbone.
Finn didn’t flinch. He didn’t blink. He kept his jaw locked, jade-green eyes fixed on the hollow pulse point beneath the enforcer’s throat.
“You’re shaking, dog,” Finn murmured, his voice bone-dry. “Is the knife too heavy for you?”
Kael’s sneer soured into rage. He yanked the collar away, hurling Finn down. Finn twisted, absorbing the impact against the freezing mud, the steady mechanical pulse of the chipped sunstone against his chest grounding his racing heart. Sleet stung his cracked lips. Wet mud soaked through his worn leather boots.
“Pariahs in Blackthorn don’t survive forty-eight hours,” Kael spat, backing away. Two armed transport guards flanked him. Finn calculated the structural weak points of their armor, checking the balance of his concealed trench knives under his cuffs.
The massive iron portcullis slammed shut with a bone-jarring crash, locking Finn inside the predatory proving ground.
Finn rose, wiping mud from his coat, ignoring the smoking chemical burn on his neck. The Central Cobblestone Quad opened up beneath the Gothic Clocktower, flanked by towering colonnades filled with hundreds of spectating werewolf students.
Crossing toward the registration hall, Finn caught the scent of ozone and wet wool. He spotted Kael, alongside Beta Lieutenants Boran and Thorne, pinning Toby, an unawakened Omega, into the mud. Kael heated a disciplinary branding iron, sizzling iron steam rising in the rain.
Finn stepped into the circle. “Three against one? Pack training must be running out of budget.”
Boran charged with a reinforced stun baton. Finn dropped his center of gravity, stepped inside the swing, caught Boran’s wrist, and snapped the elbow over his shoulder in a fluid kinetic pivot. The sharp crack of snapping cartilage echoed off the stones.
Thorne lunged with shifted claws. Finn redirected Thorne’s momentum, driving him headfirst into the stone and pinning his sleeve with a flashing trench dagger. Copper blood splattered cold cobblestones.
Kael swung the red-hot branding iron. Finn slipped under the arc, delivered an explosive heel-kick into Kael’s patella with a sickening crunch, and caught the branding iron mid-air inches from Kael’s terrified eyes before tossing it into a puddle with a hiss.
Kael’s agonizing scream cuts through the quad—and the air pressure violently drops as three suffocating Alpha dominance fields crash down from above.
Bio-electric static flooded the quad. The cobblestones vibrated. The localized air pressure thickened into a physical weight. Chris Vance stepped from the Council balcony in midnight-blue officer regalia, radiating glacial cedar-ozone authority. Glacial frost crept across the stone. Simon Hart glided from the Spire colonnade, adjusting silver-rimmed glasses, trailing bitter bergamot, dark black tea, and shadow-mist. Neal Reyes strode from the South Archway with bare, scarred bronze arms and wolf-bone cestus, radiating scorching furnace heat and crushed pine musk.
The three rulers released their full command auras. Weaker Betas and Omegas collapsed onto their hands and knees, clutching their throats in autonomic neural shock.
Finn planted his boots into the cobblestone seams, teeth clenched, jaw locked, refusing to drop an inch. Blood pounded in his temples, veins straining against the psychic gravity.
The Alphas increased the pressure, stunned by the impossible resistance. The cracked sunstone amulet against Finn’s chest turned scalding hot, his jade eyes flashed iridescent solar-gold, and the atmosphere detonated in a psychic bio-resonant shockwave.
Physical micro-lightning snapped across the air. Pheromonal scent cords violently locked between the four men. Searing chest burns ignited as mate marks flared. Accelerated heartbeats pounded like synchronized war drums. A heavy intoxicating cocktail of cedar, ozone, bergamot, tea, and pine assaulted Finn’s olfactory senses.
Chris felt an icy-hot fracture across his chest, his rigid detachment shattering into dark predatory obsession. Simon’s velvet smirk vanished, his pupils expanding as shadow-mist coiled uncontrollably around Finn’s boots. Neal let out a ragged, guttural growl, his amber-crimson eyes blazing like open furnaces.
Finn staggered back half a step, disoriented by the violent biological pull and the intoxicating avalanche of scents. Chris closed the distance in a blur, his boot cracking a cobblestone, towering over Finn with molten silver swirling in his icy eyes, his hand hovering inches from Finn’s scarred throat.
Neal bared his fangs with a ragged, feral breath, Simon’s gloved hand froze over his concealed throwing blades, and Chris stepped into Finn’s space until their coats brushed, molten silver burning through icy pupils as his voice shook with terrifying, possessive heat:
“What did you do to us, Beta?”
