Chapter 2: The Triple Mark Protocol

I Am the Prey of Three Alphas 2 of 6

Finn broke from the frozen quad standoff, his combat boots hammering against the rain-slicked stones. He plunged into the dimly lit, vaulted corridors of the East Spire, heading deep into the colossal gothic library. His chest burned, overwhelmed by colliding mate pheromones—cedar, tea, and pine clinging to his clothes and skin.

He found a stone basin and frantically washed his face, the sound of dripping water echoing off towering bookshelves. The scent of old parchment, dried lavender, and dark black tea thickened the air.

Simon Hart materialized out of living shadow mist, blocking the arched exit. He adjusted his silver glasses, his charcoal suit immaculate, velvet cloak draped over one shoulder.

“Running won’t scrub it out, little wolf,” Simon murmured, pulling an alchemical silver-mesh suppression collar from his pocket. “This will mask your scent from Chris and Neal. I offer syndicate immunity and private laboratory quarters. Put it on.”

Finn spotted the fine silver needles hidden in Simon’s cuffs. He wiped cold water from his chin. “I just broke out of one collar twenty minutes ago. You think I’m putting on a silk one just because you smile while you tighten the buckle?”

With a flick of his wrist, Finn severed the counterweight rope of an archival book-lift with his dagger. A crate of heavy tomes crashed down, blocking Simon’s advance. Finn dove down the maintenance laundry chute.

Simon smiles into the shadows, adjusting his silver glasses and whispering into his alchemical communicator: “Track his thermal signature. The little wolf likes to run.”

Finn dropped out of the drainage chute into the subterranean South Yard. Torchlight flickered on damp volcanic walls and blood-spattered sand. He headed for the pariah barracks, but a massive 6’4″ frame blocked the archway.

Neal Reyes stripped off his combat vest, tossing it aside. Heat radiated from his bare torso like an open furnace. “My wolf has been howling at my ribs since you walked into the quad. Let’s see if you can back up that pretty mouth.”

Neal forced Finn into the sand ring as Redfang brawlers pounded the iron cage bars in rhythm. Hot sand kicked up against Finn’s shins, carrying the smell of sweat, raw leather, crushed pine, and iron blood.

Neal attacked with heavy kinetic grapples and bone-crushing sweeps. Finn ducked, wove, and used evasive parkour, sliding under Neal’s reach. Anticipating Neal’s tackle, Finn pivoted, drew a lightning-fast diagonal slash with his trench dagger, and sliced open Neal’s combat wrap, drawing a thin line of blood across his chest.

Neal roars with pure feral delight, catches Finn’s wrist in a vise grip, spins him, and pins him against the ring ropes, their chests heaving in suffocating proximity.

Neal inhales Finn’s scent over the ropes, growling with possessive fire: “You’ve got real teeth, pretty boy. I’m keeping you.”

The South Yard gates screeched open. Harsh electric stadium floodlights flared to life. Cold rain poured through overhead grates onto the hot sand. Chris Vance marched in with eight armed Discipline Council marshals, planting his Frost-Iron Claymore in the sand. Steam hissed where Chris’s glacial frost aura collided with Neal’s blood-heat.

Chris invoked Chapter 4 of the Academy Charter, declaring Finn under “protective council custody.”

Neal stepped directly in front of Finn, baring his fangs with a sub-bass rumble that rattled the floodlights. Simon Hart appeared on the upper gallery, waving a signed jurisdictional exemption from the Academy Judiciary.

The three Alphas squared off, their dominance fields warping the air into a boiling pressure wave.

Finn ducked under the arena ropes, turning his back on them with cold disgust. “I’m not a bone for your dogs to fight over. Keep your collars, your petitions, and your cages. Back off.”

Finn walks away into the midnight rain, leaving the three warlords frozen in conflicted fury. Chris raises a clenched fist to halt his marshals, watching Finn vanish into the rain with burning silver eyes.

In his opulent High Sanctum, Arch-Provost Garrison Vance analyzed the 10,000-fps footage of Finn’s golden eye flare. The crystalline monitors emitted a high-pitched mechanical hum. Garrison confirmed the truth: Finn was the last surviving heir of the extinct Solar Zenith Lycans. Realizing the three Alphas were forming a protective mate bond, Garrison used his Sovereign Scepter to override the mainframe, deleting a death-row inmate’s name and inserting Finn Kane into tomorrow’s Tier-1 Ironvein Labyrinth Gauntlet.

In the East Pariah Barracks, Finn entered his cramped stone cell, sitting on the rusted bunk to bandage his knuckles. The smell of ozone and damp stone filled the air.

Emergency klaxons suddenly wailed. Three-inch iron security bars crashed over the door and window, sealing the cell in hydraulic lockdown. The wall-mounted disciplinary terminal hummed to life, its rhythmic clatter spitting out a crimson parchment dispatch.

Finn held the steaming crimson dispatch under the flashing emergency strobe, the automated text stamped with the Arch-Provost’s black wax crest:

“Inmate Finn Kane: Assigned to Tomorrow’s Tier-1 Ironvein Labyrinth Gauntlet. Survival Probability: 8.4%.”
