Chapter 6

Daddy, You Owe Me Three Years of Child Support 6 of 6

The morning sun burned bright over Millennium Park, catching the stainless steel ribbons of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The stage was blanketed in hundreds of white lilies and roses. Three hundred national journalists, civic leaders, and Chicago citizens sat in the pavilion seating.

Marcus stood at the podium, a tailored navy overcoat shielding him from the winter breeze. Resting easily on his hip was Lucas, healthy and warm, clutching Barnaby the bear.

“For four years,” Marcus spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing across the park, “a brilliant, selfless woman was branded a thief by my own family. Today, the Cook County State’s Attorney has released the full forensic evidence. Clara Holloway stole nothing. She sacrificed everything to protect our son.”

Behind Marcus, high-resolution displays projected Clara’s exquisite botanical art and rare book restorations. The crowd murmured in awe at the undeniable talent that had been erased.

“To honor her legacy, Vance Industries is establishing the fifty-million-dollar Clara & Lucas Holloway Foundation,” Marcus announced. “This fund will ensure no single mother in this city ever has to choose between her own life and her child’s medicine.”

He gestured to the front row, where Mrs. Martha Gable, Clara’s elderly neighbor from Pilsen, sat weeping into a tissue. Marcus announced her lifetime support stipend, earning a thunderous standing ovation. Lucas looked up at the massive portrait of Clara smiling down at them, and he smiled back.

At 11:30 AM, the crowd quieted as Marcus reached into his inner pocket. He produced the original, twice-folded yellow construction paper.

He laid the crayon drawing on the podium table: TO DADDY: 3 YRS MILK & BANDAIDS = $1,200,000. PLEASE PAY NOW.

Next to it, Marcus produced a certified First Chicago Bank cashier’s check. With a gold fountain pen, he signed his name on the bottom line for $1,200,000.00. He placed both documents into a double-matted mahogany and UV-glass frame, locking them together forever alongside a twenty-million-dollar equity endowment for the Lucas Vance Trust.

Marcus knelt on the stage before his son. “Your invoice is paid in full, little man. With a lifetime of interest.”

Lucas threw his arms around Marcus’s neck, hugging him tight.

By 3:30 PM, Marcus carried Lucas through the double doors of the 70th-floor Vance Penthouse. The sterile, minimalist bachelor pad had vanished. In its place was a sunlit wonderland.

Marcus walked Lucas into the new nursery. Plush wool rugs covered the floor. Miniature watercolor easels stood by the windows, and shelves were lined with classic books. In the center sat a handcrafted oak bed shaped like a sailboat.

On the bedside table, set inside a silver frame, was a photograph of Marcus and Clara laughing beneath the cherry blossoms in Grant Park. Lucas walked over and gently tucked Barnaby the bear onto the pillow next to Clara’s picture.

At 5:15 PM, the sun began to set. Molten copper and violet bled across Lake Michigan. Lucas sat on the deep velvet window bench, his small legs dangling over the edge. He looked down at his bright yellow rubber boots, the rubber creased from miles of walking through winter slush.

He looked up at Marcus, his steel-gray eyes huge and questioning. “Daddy? Mommy told me these boots were my magic armor so the monsters couldn’t hurt me in the rain. Do I still have to wear my armor?”

Marcus felt his throat close. He sat down on the bench, knelt before his son, and took one small foot into his hands. With gentle care, he eased the rubber boot off, sliding Lucas’s foot into a thick, cream-colored fleece slipper.

He lifted the second boot, setting them side by side on the low cedar shelf beneath Clara’s framed sketchbook. The smell of cedar and vanilla filled the warm air. Marcus gathered Lucas into his arms, pulling the boy tight against his chest until he could feel the steady, rapid flutter of his son’s heartbeat against his own ribs.

“No, buddy,” Marcus whispered, his voice thick with devotion. “You don’t need magic armor anymore. Daddy’s arms are your armor now. You’re home, Lucas. Daddy is never letting go.”

Lucas rested his head on Marcus’s shoulder. “I love you, Daddy,” he whispered, his eyes closing as the first stars appeared.

[Marcus held his sleeping son close against his chest as the twilight deepened into a sky of velvet and stars. He touched the cool platinum of Clara’s sapphire ring resting over his heart, looking out across the glittering expanse of the city below. The storm had passed, the debt was paid in full, and in his arms, his whole world was finally home.]
