Chapter 4
Dawn light broke over Lake Michigan, casting long shadows across the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Executive Lounge. Steam rose from fresh black coffee on the mahogany table. Raymond Vance removed the headphones, his hands trembling with suppressed fury. He set the tablet down with a heavy clack.
“My silence allowed this,” the retired Federal Judge murmured, his deep resonant baritone thick with disgust. “I chose judicial detachment over my own household. Eleanor’s narcissistic poison festered right under my roof.”
Marcus stood by the window, the silver chain around his neck cold against his skin. “She framed Clara for two million dollars. She threatened her with federal prison.”
Raymond pulled off his wire-rimmed spectacles and polished them deliberately. “The recorded confession, the birth certificate, the bank logs. It meets every statutory standard for Title 18 wire fraud, grand larceny, and criminal extortion.” He placed his glasses back on, his hazel eyes locking onto Marcus.
“I will destroy her, Dad,” Marcus said quietly.
Raymond struck the floor with his ebony cane, the sound echoing like a gavel crack. “Then we destroy her together. By the law.”
Marcus returned to VIP Suite 1104. The morning sun warmed the room in golden, amber bands. The soft hum of the humidifier was the only sound. Nurse Sarah checked the telemetry screen and smiled. “Fever broke. 98.6. His lungs are clearing.”
Marcus sat on the edge of the crib. Lucas stirred, his small eyelashes fluttering. He didn’t cry when he opened his eyes. He lay very still, clutching Barnaby to his chest, staring at the broad-shouldered man sitting beside his bed.
Lucas blinked once. Twice. Slowly, a small, warm hand slid out from beneath the thermal blanket. His tiny fingertips brushed the dark shadow of stubble along Marcus’s jaw.
“Daddy?” the boy whispered, his voice sweet and clear in the quiet room. “Mommy showed me your picture every night before bed. You have the gray eyes. You came.”
Marcus stopped breathing. For three seconds, forty billion dollars of corporate empire ceased to exist. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against his son’s soft curls, his breath shuddering. “I’m here, buddy,” Marcus choked out, a tear tracking down his cheek. “Daddy’s here.”
Raymond stepped forward with grandfatherly warmth, smiling down at the boy who held the future of their family in his small hands.
By 7:00 AM, in the suite’s study alcove, Chief Forensic Auditor Arthur Pendelton hit enter on his laptop. He cross-referenced the December 2022 Cayman transfer.
“Got it,” Pendelton announced. “The smoking gun. The transfer was initiated from IP address 192.168.1.104. That’s the private terminal in Eleanor’s locked study at Greystone Estate in Lake Forest. Signed with her personal cryptographic key.”
Senior Investigator Miller from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office nodded. “State’s Attorney and U.S. Attorney just approved the felony arrest warrants. Cook County Family Division also fast-tracked the custody decree. You have emergency sole legal and physical custody, Mr. Vance.”
At 7:45 AM, Nurse Sarah was feeding Lucas warm oatmeal. The boy giggled as Marcus wiped his chin with a napkin. Trusted private security stood guard outside the suite.
Suddenly, Marcus’s phone vibrated. He read the encrypted alert. Eleanor had called an unscheduled 8:30 AM board meeting to stage a vote of no confidence and seize executive control.
Marcus locked his screen. He ordered all twelve board members and institutional representatives to attend the 68th-floor boardroom. He put on his tailored charcoal jacket and leaned down to kiss Lucas’s forehead. “Daddy will be right back, okay?”
Lucas waved his spoon. “Okay, Daddy.”
[The steel elevator doors slid closed, reflecting Marcus Vance and retired Judge Raymond Vance flanked by four plainclothes Cook County detectives. Outside, police motorcycle sirens spun into life, clearing the snow-packed lanes of Michigan Avenue straight toward the sixty-eighth floor of Vance Tower.]
