Chapter 5

Daddy, You Owe Me Three Years of Child Support 5 of 6

The silence in the sixty-eighth-floor boardroom was suffocating. Above the forty-foot Brazilian mahogany table, panoramic windows showcased the freezing Chicago River. At the head of the table sat Eleanor Kensington-Vance, draped in an emerald Chanel suit.

She smirked, gesturing with her gold fountain pen. “Under Section 4B of the corporate bylaws, I present this emergency motion to suspend Marcus Vance as CEO. The gala incident proves his mental instability. Executive authority will transfer to the Vance Foundation.”

The twelve board members murmured in hesitation, scanning the fabricated psychiatric dossiers she had distributed.

“I call for the vote,” Eleanor declared, her crimson lips pulling into a triumphant smile.

The heavy double doors swung open with a resounding thud.

Marcus strode in, flanked by Raymond Vance, Arthur Pendelton, and four senior Cook County detectives. Eleanor shrieked. “Security! Remove them!”

Raymond struck his ebony cane against the marble threshold. “You will sit down, Eleanor,” the retired Federal Judge boomed, presenting certified federal subpoenas and search warrants to the room.

Marcus walked directly to the head of the table. He did not ask Eleanor to move; his physical presence forced her to scramble out of the chair. Marcus sat down and plugged his encrypted tablet into the master AV console.

“This isn’t a board meeting, Eleanor,” Marcus said, his voice lethal and precise. “It’s your sentencing hearing.”

On the thirty-foot digital display wall, Marcus projected Exhibit A. The certified Northwestern Memorial DNA report flashed in blinding white light: Probability of Paternity: 99.9997%.

Gasps echoed down the table.

Marcus swiped to Exhibit B. Pendelton’s forensic digital trace appeared, highlighting IP 192.168.1.104. “The two million dollars stolen in December 2022 was not taken by Clara Holloway. It was wired from Eleanor’s private terminal at Greystone Estate.”

Then, Marcus hit play.

Over the boardroom surround sound, Eleanor’s own voice played with pristine, terrifying clarity: “You are an orphan with neither blood nor pedigree, Clara… Sign this departure agreement and vanish from Chicago before midnight, or the FBI will arrest you at O’Hare. Marcus will watch you spend twenty years in federal prison, and your child will be born in a state ward.”

At the end of the table, Eleanor’s gold fountain pen slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering across the polished wood. Her emerald jacket seemed suddenly two sizes too large. The crimson paint on her lips parted, but no sound came out—only a dry, choking gasp as twelve board members turned to stare at her in unmasked revulsion.

“It’s a deepfake!” Eleanor screamed, panic shredding her aristocratic composure. “It’s a lie!”

Raymond Vance stepped forward. “I call the vote for immediate expulsion,” he stated, representing 57% equity with Marcus.

Every single hand in the room went up. A unanimous 12-0 expulsion.

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for Title 18 Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, and Criminal Child Endangerment.”

The cold bite of steel snapped over Eleanor’s diamond bracelets. She shrieked, thrashing against the officers. “Marcus! I am your mother!”

Marcus looked at her with absolute, arctic indifference. “You are no mother of mine.”

Detectives marched Eleanor to the glass elevators. Down in the main marble lobby, dozens of flashing press cameras and national reporters swarmed, capturing the disgraced matriarch’s perp walk into the back of a squad car.

[Marcus stood alone against the glass of the sixty-eighth floor, watching the flashing red and blue strobe lights of the police cruiser dissolve into the slush of Wacker Drive. On the mahogany table behind him, his phone buzzed with an incoming text from Dr. Harrison: Lucas has been fully discharged. He’s sitting with Barnaby, asking when his Daddy is taking him home.]
