Chapter 1

Daddy, You Owe Me Three Years of Child Support 1 of 6

The silence in the Palmer House Grand Ballroom was not gradual; it fell like severed cable. Four hundred guests—senators, venture capitalists, shipping heirs draped in diamonds—froze with champagne flutes half-raised. Down the forty-yard expanse of Persian red carpet, beneath crystal chandeliers reflecting off five thousand ounces of gilded molding, came a rhythmic, rubbery squeak-slosh.

A boy no taller than a cocktail table stood at the edge of the velvet ropes. His oversized yellow rainboots were caked in gray Chicago slush, leaving dark, melting puddles on the wool weave. Under his left arm, he clutched a brown plush bear missing an ear, its polyester stuffing visible through coarse green twine. His chapped lips parted, exhaling a faint plume of mist into the heated air of the ballroom.

Marcus Vance stood at the golden podium. At thirty-four, the Chairman and CEO of Vance Industries possessed an icy, impenetrable armor. He adjusted the platinum cufflink on his left wrist, his steel-gray eyes sweeping over the crowd. Four years ago, Clara Holloway had vanished, leaving a void he filled by quadrupling his company’s valuation. Tonight was the 50th Anniversary Gala, a forty-billion-dollar milestone, yet he felt only the hollow thud of his own pulse.

A distraction at the carved mahogany service entrance broke the spell. A catering cart rattled. Heavy doors creaked against the howling winter blizzard outside. Then, the boy slipped through.

Whispers of shock and disdain rippled through the tables. Men in tuxedos sneered; women in silk gowns pulled their hemlines away. Security Chief Barnes surged forward, his hand reaching for his earpiece. Marcus raised a single commanding hand. The gesture was absolute. Barnes halted instantly.

The toddler marched down the center aisle. He reached the base of the marble steps leading to the keynote stage. The spotlight beam cut through the chandelier glow, illuminating his pale, porcelain cheeks, heavily flushed with fever. His chest heaved in shallow, rattling breaths beneath a hand-knitted navy wool sweater.

Reaching into his pocket, the boy extracted a damp, twice-folded sheet of yellow construction paper. He tilted his head up, his dark wavy curls falling back.

“Excuse me, sir,” the boy said, his voice soft, precise, and heartbreakingly polite. “Are you Marcus Vance?”

Marcus stepped down from the podium. The heavy silence of the hall pressed in as he knelt on one knee, his bespoke trousers resting against the cold marble. “Yes. I am.”

The boy extended the damp yellow paper. “Mommy said to give this to you. She said it’s for the milk and the band-aids.”

Before Marcus could take it, Eleanor Kensington-Vance stood up abruptly from the VIP table. The matriarch of the Vance family shattered a crystal flute against the parquet floor. “Barnes!” she shrieked, her venomous Mid-Atlantic cadence echoing. “Throw that gutter rat into the snow immediately!”

Marcus ignored his mother entirely. He took the yellow construction paper. Unfolding it, he read the crude crayon scrawl: TO DADDY: 3 YRS MILK & BANDAIDS = $1,200,000. PLEASE PAY NOW.

The air vanished from Marcus’s lungs. He looked at the boy’s face. The porcelain skin, the dark curls, and the unmistakable, penetrating steel-gray eyes. His own eyes. Staring back at him.

Barnes stepped onto the stage, reaching for the child’s collar. Marcus stood, his voice an ice-cold, lethal whip crack. “Touch him, Barnes, and I will break both your wrists.”

The security chief recoiled, palms up, retreating to the shadows.

Lucas swayed on his yellow boots. “My magic armor is getting heavy,” he whispered.

The boy’s knees buckled.

Marcus’s reflexes snapped. He lunged, catching the limp, burning toddler against his chest before the child hit the marble. The heat radiating through the soaked wool sweater was lethal. The boy’s breathing was a shallow, rattling gasp of severe pneumonia.

Eleanor rushed forward, her chinchilla fur dragging across the stage steps. “Marcus! Hand that filthy thing to security! Think of the stock price!”

Marcus shoved past her, his shoulder clipping her hard enough to send her staggering into the podium. “Get out of my way, Mother.”

He burst through the ballroom’s revolving doors into the driving blizzard, the child clutched to his chest. He piled into the armored Maybach waiting on the valet concourse. “Northwestern Memorial. Now,” he roared.

[Marcus tore off his silk tie, pressing a cold wet linen against Lucas’s burning forehead as the Maybach ran the red light onto Michigan Avenue. Through the tinted rear glass, Eleanor stood frozen under the glowing marquee—her face drained of all color, staring into the storm at the ghost of the boy she had tried to erase.]
