Chapter 3

Daddy, You Owe Me Three Years of Child Support 3 of 6

The golden pool of light from the desk lamp illuminated the coarse green nylon twine stitched along Barnaby the bear’s spine. Outside VIP Suite 1104, silent snow fell past the high window. Marcus sat at the wooden hospital desk, a sterile surgical scalpel in his hand.

He slid the razor-sharp edge under the first knot. Snip. Then the next. Carefully parting the polyester stuffing, his fingers met smooth plastic. He extracted a heat-sealed transparent waterproof pouch.

Inside lay four items: an Illinois Certificate of Live Birth, a thick stack of faded pharmacy receipts, a small velvet bag, and a 64GB micro-SD card labeled M.V. – THE TRUTH.

Marcus unfolded the birth certificate. Printed clearly under Father was his own full name: Marcus Alexander Vance. At the bottom, Clara Holloway’s signature was dated November 14, 2023.

He picked up the small velvet bag. When he untied the silver cord, the weight that rolled into his palm was cold and unmistakably heavy. A 4.5-carat Ceylon sapphire, nestled in hand-engraved platinum prongs.

For four years, Eleanor had sworn that Clara sold the engagement ring within forty-eight hours of boarding a train to New York, flaunting the cash to her bohemian friends. Yet here it was—unmarred, unpolished, smelling faintly of dried lavender and cheap laundry detergent. Clara hadn’t sold it for formula. She hadn’t sold it for antibiotics. She had sewn it inside a child’s toy so it would find its way back to him.

Marcus’s throat constricted. He opened Clara’s worn leather journal.

November 2023. He has your eyes, Marcus. Steel-gray. I tell him about you every night.

March 2025. I skipped meals again today. Lucas needs amoxicillin for his ear infection. It was $14. I will not touch Eleanor’s filthy money. I will raise him with honor.

October 2026. My heart is failing. The doctors say it’s weeks now. I bought him yellow rainboots. I told him they are magic armor. Please, Marcus. When he finds you, love him.

Tears wetted the paper as Marcus gripped the edge of the desk, the wood creaking under his fingers. He plugged his tablet into the wall and inserted the micro-SD card, pulling on a pair of noise-canceling headphones. He clicked on Track_01_Dec2022.mp3.

Eleanor’s cold, calculated voice played with pristine, terrifying clarity: “You are an orphan with neither blood nor pedigree, Clara. I have already authorized a two-million-dollar wire transfer from the Cayman accounts to your name. The board will see you as a corporate thief. Sign this departure agreement and vanish from Chicago before midnight, or the FBI will arrest you at O’Hare. Marcus will watch you spend twenty years in federal prison, and your child will be born in a state ward.”

Clara’s voice followed, desperate, trembling, but unyielding: “I am two weeks pregnant. You cannot do this. Marcus has a right to know his child!”

“Marcus belongs to the Vance empire,” Eleanor snapped. “Sign.”

Marcus tore the headphones off, his chest heaving. His mother had orchestrated it all. The theft, the framing, the exile.

He clicked Track_02_For_Lucas.mp3. Clara’s weakened, breathless voice filled the room. “Lucas, my brave boy. Daddy is strong. He has gray eyes, just like yours. He will keep you safe.”

Marcus broke down completely, burying his face in his hands, weeping into the quiet room. The hardened billionaire died at that desk, and a devoted, grieving father was born in his place.

He picked up the sapphire ring, threaded it onto the silver chain around his neck, and rested it over his heart.

The suite door opened. Retired Federal Judge Raymond Vance stepped inside. He leaned heavily on a silver-topped ebony cane, wearing a thick charcoal overcoat, his piercing hazel eyes scanning the room.

Marcus stood up, his face a mask of absolute, unforgiving resolve. He handed the tablet and the headphones to his father.

[Raymond Vance adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, his weathered hand resting on the silver grip of his cane as he slipped the headphones over his ears. Marcus pressed play on the tablet, and as Eleanor’s cold, calculated voice filled the silent room, the retired judge’s face hardened into a mask of immovable stone.]
