Chapter 6: The Sovereign Vow

Chosen by the Mafia King’s Mastiff 6 of 6

Rain hammered against the reinforced skylights of the Tribeca fortress, a relentless midnight drumming. Inside Kendrick Ashford’s private study, birch logs glowed red in the massive black granite hearth. Long, dancing shadows stretched across the floor-to-ceiling walnut shelves and maritime charts. On the cashmere rug before the fire, Penny slept soundly, wrapped in a tangle of limbs with Titan. Her small head rested peacefully against the mastiff’s warm belly, his deep snores vibrating the floorboards.

Kendrick sat in a heavy leather armchair. His bespoke shirt had been cut away, revealing broad, corded shoulders and the battle scars of a decade of underworld rule. A jagged four-inch laceration ran across his left bicep where the sniper’s shrapnel had sliced through his sleeve.

He waved away the syndicate doctor with cold finality. “Leave the tray. Miss Bennett will handle it. Get the captains assembled in the Great Hall.”

Willa knelt beside the chair with antiseptic, gauze, and butterfly closures. Her hands trembled slightly as she poured isopropyl alcohol, but steadied as she began to clean the dried blood. The sharp medicinal sting of iodine mingled with Kendrick’s scent—sandalwood, rain, and raw adrenaline.

Kendrick watched her face in the firelight. His muscles clenched beneath her gentle touch, not from physical pain, but from the searing agony of restrained desire. “You threw yourself over my daughter under sniper fire, Willa. You took steel for her.”

Willa looked up, her grey-blue eyes shining with quiet conviction. “I didn’t think about steel, Kendrick. I thought about a little girl who has suffered too much. I would die before I let anyone hurt her.”

Kendrick’s large, warm hand reached out, catching Willa’s wrist. His grip was not restraining, but reverent, trembling with suppressed hunger. He pulled her gently upward until she stood between his parted knees.

His rough, calloused thumb traced the faint bruise along her collarbone, feeling the rapid, fluttering leap of her pulse beneath her skin. “You don’t die for her, Willa. You live for her. And you live for me.”

Willa’s breath caught in her throat. The heat radiating from his chest was overwhelming. Kendrick rose slowly to his feet, towering over her. His hand slid to cup the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling in the loose strands of her honey-chestnut hair.

His slate-grey eyes dropped to her lips. The air between them crackled like lightning. “From the moment Titan laid his head on your shoes, my house has belonged to you. You are the only woman I will ever stand beside.”

His face lowered. His lips brushed the soft curve of her cheek, hovering a millimeter from her mouth.

A sharp rap on the heavy mahogany door broke the spell.

“Boss,” Marcus Reed called out. “The captains are assembled in the Great Hall. The encrypted High Council link is live.”

Kendrick paused, his forehead resting against Willa’s for one agonizing, breathless second. His eyes burned with dark promise. “Come with me. Let me show this city who you are.”

In the cavernous Great Hall, twenty elite Ashford captains in dark suits stood at rigid attention beneath the wolf banner. Along the north wall, high-definition satellite feeds projected the live video feeds of the Five Families Council. Elder Castiglione watched with narrowed eyes; beside his feed, Barrett Vance’s face was ashen, his lips drawn into a bloodless white line.

Kendrick ascended the three black granite steps of the dais, holding Willa’s hand in a firm, unbreakable grip. Willa stood straight, wearing a clean midnight-blue silk dress. Her posture radiated natural nobility, projecting a quiet, untouchable majesty.

Kendrick removed the heavy, flawless platinum Ashford Signet ring—engraved with the snarling Rampant Wolf—from his own right ring finger. Taking Willa’s right hand, he slid the heavy ring onto her thumb. The physical gravity of the metal anchored her; she felt the weight of thousands of lives and an entire underworld empire suddenly bound to her.

Kendrick’s baritone boomed through the vaulted hall, echoing with terrifying absolute authority. “From this hour forward, Willa Bennett speaks with the sovereign voice of the Don. Her word is my command. Her life is the bloodline of the Ashford house. Whosoever raises a hand, a word, or a weapon against her, declares war on me. She is your future Queen.”

Marcus Reed stepped forward. He drew his ceremonial blade and dropped to one knee. “Hail the Queen.”

In unison, twenty captains dropped to their knees on the granite floor. The unified, echoing thud shook the walls. On the video feed, Barrett Vance gripped the armrests of his chair, suffocating on his own ruined ambition as Castiglione bowed his head in acknowledgment.

By 2:30 AM, the coronation was over. Kendrick was downstairs coordinating security sweeps with Marcus. Willa returned to the quiet, firelit study, her thumb still feeling the miraculous weight of the platinum signet ring.

On the central mahogany desk sat a heavy, antique steel strongbox, blackened by fire and soot. A handwritten card from Kendrick lay beside it: Recovered from the rubble of Berth forty-four six years ago. The puzzle that links Elena to Red Hook. No locksmith in New York has cracked it. Perhaps your brilliant mind can find the key.

Willa approached the box, her heart pounding violently in her throat. She studied the brass faceplate. It was engraved with a compass rose and an interlocking pair of sea lilies: the private trademark of Arthur Sinclair.

Trembling, Willa unclasps the silver chain from beneath her neckline. She pulled out the small silver music box key her father had given her on her twenty-first birthday. She aligned the teeth with the keyway. It slid in with oiled, buttery perfection.

Willa rotated the key clockwise. CLICK-CLACK. A series of heavy internal tumblers slid and released. The spring-loaded steel lid popped open two inches, revealing scorched blueprints and encrypted ledgers.

A heavy footstep fell on the hardwood behind her. The adrenaline froze the blood in Willa’s veins.

Kendrick stepped out of the study shadows. His slate-grey eyes locked onto the silver key in her hand, his investigative instincts piercing through the dark. His baritone dropped into a dangerous, gravelly whisper.

“That key was forged by Arthur Sinclair for his only daughter. Who are you, Willa?”
