Chapter 5: Blood on the Hudson

Chosen by the Mafia King’s Mastiff 5 of 6

Thick, yellow-grey sea fog rolled off the Upper New York Bay, swallowing the steel trestles of the Gowanus Expressway. The twilight faded rapidly into murky gloom, reducing visibility to thirty yards. Kendrick Ashford’s four-vehicle armored convoy glided south along the elevated highway, racing toward Red Hook Berth 44 to execute the emergency customs audit on Barrett Vance’s illicit containers.

Inside the Maybach, the atmosphere was deceptively calm. Penny sat between Willa and Titan on the leather seats, happily coloring a drawing of Titan with a red ribbon and Willa wearing a crown. Willa gently stroked Penny’s curls, her shoulder brushing comfortably against Kendrick’s arm. The quiet hum of the twin-turbo engine was the only sound.

Without warning, the trap sprang.

A heavy commercial dump truck with reinforced steel bumpers blew through the exit barrier from the right blind spot. It broadsided Marcus Reed’s lead Suburban with an ear-splitting, sickening crunch of metal.

The Suburban spun violently across two lanes, flipping onto its roof and throwing violent sparks against the concrete median. The Maybach driver slammed on the brakes, throwing Willa against her seatbelt. Before the vehicle could reverse, two concussive detonations exploded ahead. Thick white smoke grenades engulfed the viaduct, blinding the convoy in a dense chemical fog.

High-caliber .338 Lapua sniper rounds rained down from an elevated billboard gantry forty yards away. The concussive CRACK-THUMP of the shots hammered the air.

The first two rounds struck the Maybach’s windshield. The Level 8 ballistic glass crazed instantly, absorbing the kinetic shock and blooming into stark white spiderweb fractals.

Then, a third armor-piercing incendiary round hit the A-pillar at a structural angle, penetrating the steel seam. High-velocity shrapnel and pulverized glass sprayed through the cabin like deadly hail.

Willa’s maternal reflexes overrode conscious thought. Zero hesitation. She grabbed Penny by the waist, wrenched the child off the leather seat, and dived onto the carpeted floorboards. She arched her spine over Penny, curling her body into a human shell.

A jagged steel fragment tore through her charcoal wool dress. Sharp, white-hot pain flared across her collarbone. Willa clamped her teeth against her lower lip so hard that copper-sweet blood filled her mouth, stifling a scream to keep Penny from panic.

Willa locked her arms around Penny’s thrashing body, burying the child’s face into her chest. Penny shrieked in terror. “Mama! Mama!”

Willa whispered through clenched, bleeding teeth, her breath hitching in ragged gasps. “I’ve got you, baby. Don’t look. I’ve got you. Mama is here.”

Kendrick saw Willa bleeding over his daughter. His slate-grey eyes turned completely black with primal, sovereign fury. His heart rate dropped into a terrifying combat steadiness. He hit the passenger door emergency release.

Titan launched from the open door like a 150-pound cannonball. A tactical mercenary advancing through the fog with a magnetic door charge barely raised his rifle before Titan hit his chest at thirty miles per hour. The man hit the asphalt. Titan clamped his jaws over the shooter’s shoulder and collarbone. The sickening, wet crunch of human bone echoed through the fog as the dog pinned him helpless.

Kendrick stepped out into the swirling fog. His custom Kimber .45 ACP was drawn. He did not take cover; he walked forward with terrifying, rhythmic composure.

A shooter emerged from behind a disabled taxi. Kendrick raised his weapon and placed two center-mass double taps into the man’s sternum before the mercenary could blink. A second shooter aimed from the median barrier. Orange muzzle flashes stroked through the smoke. Kendrick fired once. The round caught the sniper directly between the eyes.

Marcus Reed and the rear escort team breached the smoke with submachine guns, neutralizing the remaining two spotters with ruthless efficiency. Marcus called out over the encrypted comms, his voice steady. “Perimeter secure! Kill box neutralized!”

Kendrick rushed back to the Maybach, dropping to his knees on the rain-greasy asphalt. He wrenched the rear door wide open. His emotional armor was completely gone; his breathing was ragged, his face pale with terror.

“Willa! Willa, look at me!”

Willa slowly uncoiled from the floorboards. She was pale and trembling, her left sleeve soaked in dark crimson arterial blood. In her lap, Penny was completely unharmed, clutching Willa’s collar, her heart hammering against Willa’s ribs.

Willa looked up into Kendrick’s panicked eyes. Her lips trembled into a faint, defiant smile. “Penny doesn’t have a scratch, Kendrick. We’re okay.”

Kendrick reached in and pulled both Willa and Penny into his arms against his broad chest in the rain. He buried his face in Willa’s hair, his powerful frame shuddering with profound, desperate relief.

Marcus Reed approached through the mist. He held an evidence bag containing a spent brass rifle casing picked up from the elevated sniper perch. “Boss. The shooter’s rifle was a custom Steyr .338. Look at the headstamp on the brass.”

Kendrick took the bag. Under the amber hazard lights, he read the laser-etched military headstamp: `S-CH / LOT 7-ECHO-9`.

Kendrick’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. His baritone trembled with cold, vibrating fury. “Custom Swiss armor-piercing incendiary. Only twenty crates ever manufactured. The exact lot that blew up Elena’s car on the bridge.”

Willa looked at the casing, her vision swimming in horror. The truth crashed into her, shattering the walls she had built for six years. She locked eyes with Kendrick amidst the sirens and fog, gripping his bloody hand. She whispered the secret she had kept buried.

“That is the same ammunition lot that blew up Berth forty-four. The man who killed your wife… is the man who murdered my family.”
