Chapter 2: The Fortress on Hudson Street

Chosen by the Mafia King’s Mastiff 2 of 6

Marcus Reed moved with tactical efficiency, clearing the private service corridors of The Apex. Two heavily armed Ashford operators held the private executive elevator doors open. Willa carried Penny against her chest, the child’s small arms locked tightly around her neck. Titan walked pressed against Willa’s left thigh, his 150-pound bulk acting as a living armored wall.

They descended into the subterranean VIP parking concourse. A cold, damp draft of Manhattan rain rushed through the concrete bay. Willa’s thin polyester server vest offered zero protection. An involuntary shiver wracked her frame, rattling her teeth as the adrenaline began to crash.

Without a word, Kendrick stripped off his heavy charcoal bespoke overcoat. He draped the thick, warm cashmere around Willa’s shoulders, wrapping both her and Penny in a heavy shield of radiating warmth. The wool smelled of clean rain, aged cedarwood, and sandalwood.

Kendrick’s knuckles brushed Willa’s collarbone as he adjusted the lapels. An electric jolt snapped between their skin. Willa’s breath hitched. Her stormy grey-blue eyes met his slate-grey gaze.

Kendrick spoke quietly, his baritone a low rumble in the concrete bay. “Breathe, Miss Bennett. The wolves are behind the glass. You are under my roof now.”

Marcus opened the rear door of the matte-black Maybach Guard. Willa stepped into the leather sanctuary with Penny. The heavy ballistic door sealed behind them with a pressurized, airtight thud.

Amber sodium streetlights sliced through the rain-slicked Level 8 ballistic glass as the Maybach blurred south along the West Side Highway. Inside the cabin, the low, vibrationless purr of the twin-turbo V12 engine offered absolute isolation. The scent of Connolly leather, gun oil, and Kendrick’s subtle cedarwood cologne filled the space, sharply contrasting with Willa’s damp polyester uniform.

Penny’s exhaustion overtook her. Curled across Willa’s lap, the child’s rhythmic breathing synced with Willa’s own heartbeat. Her cheek rested directly over Willa’s sternum. Small fingers released their death-grip on Barnaby to intertwine with Willa’s work-roughened thumb. On the floorboards, Titan stretched his massive frame, wedging his heavy skull over Willa’s feet to anchor himself against the vehicle’s sway.

Kendrick sat in the opposite captain’s chair. His posture was totally still, his hands resting relaxed on his knees. Yet his slate-grey eyes tracked every micro-expression on Willa’s face. He studied her high, aristocratic cheekbones, the faint scar on her collarbone, and the undeniable steadiness of her hands.

“You didn’t scream when my dog approached you,” Kendrick said, his voice slicing through the quiet. “You didn’t flinch when Barrett drew guards. Most people would have been on their knees weeping.”

Willa kept her voice low, mindful of the sleeping child. “I have worked banquet shifts for Wall Street brokers and private syndicates for six years, Mr. Ashford. I have learned that animals and armed men are rarely the most dangerous things in a room. It’s the smiling ones with contracts.”

A slow, rare glint of genuine intrigue touched Kendrick’s eyes. “A server who reads contracts and doesn’t fear predators. You’re an anomaly, Willa Bennett.”

Marcus’s calm voice broke through the encrypted comms. “Boss, trailing vehicle. Alyssa Vance’s silver 911 blew past our rear escort at Canal Street. She’s accelerating toward Hudson Street.”

Kendrick’s jaw tightened. “Let her hit the gate.”

The convoy rolled into the subterranean courtyard of the imposing six-story Tribeca fortress. Heavy hydraulic steel gates clamped shut behind them, locking out the stormy Manhattan night.

Outside the reinforced glass airlock, Alyssa Vance abandoned her Porsche in the driveway. Drenched by rain, her platinum hair plastered to her neck and her makeup smeared into black streaks, she hammered furiously on the glass.

“Kendrick! Let me in!” Her shrill voice crackled over the distorted metallic security intercom. “You cannot bring this scullery rat, this Queens thief into your family! She drugged your dog! She’s an opportunist planning to ransom Penny!”

Kendrick reached for the terminal to silence the feed, his eyes darkening with lethal intent. But Willa gently placed the sleeping Penny into Kendrick’s arms. She stepped to the security console, her spine straight, and pressed the audio toggle.

She addressed Alyssa with diamond-hard, old-money composure. “Miss Vance, you are shrieking on a public Hudson Street sidewalk in an eighty-five-thousand-dollar Dior gown that is currently dragging through municipal gutter runoff. You have committed two traffic felonies, breached syndicate security zones, and demonstrated the emotional restraint of a spoiled toddler. If I were an opportunist, I would sue you for defamation; as it stands, I merely pity your complete lack of dignity.”

Alyssa gasped. She choked on her own humiliated fury, staring in horror through the glass as her social dominance crumbled to ash before a banquet server.

Kendrick stepped up behind Willa. His large, warm hand settled at the small of her back—a touch radiating electric possessiveness. He spoke to Marcus through the terminal. “Strip the Vance security transponder. Escort Miss Vance to the curb. If she steps onto Hudson Street again tonight, detain her in the holding cells.”

Upstairs, Willa helped tuck Penny into an oversized plush bed in the warm, quiet nursery. Titan curled up on the sheepskin rug beside the child. Penny whispered, “Stay, Willa.” Willa stroked her hair until she slept.

Kendrick led Willa into his massive private study. Birch logs crackled in a black granite fireplace, illuminating polished dark granite slabs and exposed 19th-century industrial brickwork. Kendrick placed a thick leather-bound document on the mahogany desk.

“Six figures a month,” he stated. “Full diplomatic immunity under the Ashford crest. You become Penny’s legal guardian and my public fiancée of convenience. No physical demands. You live here under my absolute shield.”

Willa looked at the staggering financial figures, her heart aching with the surreal gravity of the moment. “Why me, Kendrick? You could buy any woman in the city.”

Kendrick’s baritone was heavy with raw honesty. “Because my daughter spoke to you. And because my dog, who has ripped the throats out of four assassins, bowed his head to you. That is not bought. That is fate.”

Kendrick stepped into the adjoining communications room to take a secure line from the Council. Willa walked toward the twenty-foot arched windows framing the rainy Hudson River. Her eyes drifted to a framed antique artifact hanging behind his desk.

The breath seized in her lungs.

It was a framed 1920s maritime charter map of New York Harbor. Stamped in deep crimson ink across Red Hook Berth 44 was the Ashford Syndicate’s rampant wolf insignia. Beneath it were the handwritten notes of Kendrick’s late father and Kendrick himself.

Her knuckles turned bloodless against her thigh. The Ashford Syndicate didn’t just share shipping lanes with her father—they held proprietary operational dominion over the very water where Arthur and Julian Sinclair were blown to ash. She hadn’t found a sanctuary. She had walked straight into the fortress of her family’s executioners. Heavy footsteps approached from the doorway behind her.
