Chapter 4: The Council’s Ambush

Chosen by the Mafia King’s Mastiff 4 of 6

The High Council Vault Chamber sat windowless, eighty floors above Manhattan. Amber halo lighting recessed into the ceiling cast long shadows across the thirty-foot polished obsidian table. A dense blue haze of aged Cohiba cigar smoke and 30-year single malt hung over the room. Five syndicate patriarchs in bespoke dark pinstripe suits sat around the table, backed by stone-faced bodyguards whose hands hovered near concealed holster breaks.

Elder Castiglione, eighty years old and scarred from fifty years of dock wars, sat at the head. He exhaled a thick plume of smoke through his nose, his heavy silver eyebrows knitted together in predatory focus.

Barrett Vance slammed his fist down, his emerald signet ring clattering against the stone. “We are the Five Families of the Eastern Seaboard! Kendrick Ashford has spit on our traditions! He paraded a common banquet waitress before our guests, insulted fifteen aristocratic daughters, and handed the syndicate heir to an unvetted Queens scullery maid! Page Six is mocking our bloodlines!”

Barrett slid thick leather dossiers across the table to each elder. His face flushed with blotchy violet rage. “Ashford Global’s terminals at Red Hook Berth forty-four have posted a fifteen-million-dollar operational loss this quarter under Kendrick’s distracted leadership. I move for an immediate transfer of Berth forty-four to Vance Logistics to safeguard our Atlantic commerce!”

Castiglione narrowed his wrinkled eyes. “Kendrick has never lost a dollar in eight years, Barrett. You bring accusations, but Kendrick has a right to answer before we invoke Article Nine.”

The heavy pneumatic doors unlocked with a mechanical hiss. Castiglione looked up, tapping his ash. “Speak of the wolf, and he arrives.”

The steel-reinforced blast doors slid open. Kendrick Ashford strode into the chamber, flanked by Marcus Reed. Titan walked on a loose lead beside him.

Beside Kendrick walked Willa.

Gone was the polyester banquet uniform. She wore a bespoke charcoal Italian wool sheath dress tailored to absolute perfection, featuring a high boat-neck collar. Her honey-chestnut hair was pinned in a sleek chignon. She commanded the room with the quiet, devastating elegance of old-world royalty.

Titan marched to Kendrick’s designated high-backed leather chair. The beast sat down with a heavy thud and fixed Barrett Vance with an unblinking, predatory amber stare. Barrett instinctively pulled his feet back beneath his chair.

Barrett sneered across the table, a vein throbbing in his temple. “Kendrick, this is an executive tribunal, not a charity kitchen! Dismiss your whore from the room!”

Kendrick did not even look at Barrett. His slate-grey gaze locked onto Castiglione. His baritone dropped an octave, radiating cold lethality. “Choose your next words carefully, Barrett. Because if you disrespect the woman who wears the Ashford protection under my roof, you won’t live to hear the vote.”

Castiglione raised a withered, ring-encrusted hand to halt the bloodshed. “Under syndicate bylaws, any domestic partner granted household authority over the bloodline must be vetted. Miss Bennett, you have no pedigree, no dowry, and no standing among the Five Families. Why shouldn’t we order you removed?”

Willa met Castiglione’s gaze without a blink. Her knuckles turned bloodless on the table rim for a single second before she released her grip. Her voice was calm, melodic, and razor-sharp.

“With respect, Elder Castiglione, my standing is not derived from who my father was. It is derived from what I can do for this syndicate. And right now, I am the only person in this room who can stop you from being robbed blind.”

Willa stepped calmly to the interactive podium at the foot of the table. The arctic chill of the heavily air-conditioned vault raised goosebumps beneath her wool sleeves, but her mind was fire. She tapped the glass touchscreen, pulling up Barrett’s submitted bill-of-lading documents for Red Hook Berth 44 across the wall monitors.

As the rows of data illuminated the room, Willa’s heart leaped into her throat. The formatting—the maritime container routing codes—was the exact proprietary logistics architecture designed by her late father, Arthur Sinclair. Barrett had stolen it from the ashes.

Her blood sang with righteous fury. She highlighted Row 44-B with a flick of her finger.

“Elder Castiglione, look at row forty-four-B. Mr. Vance’s report claims these sixteen Panamanian-flagged container hulls carried raw machine components from Rotterdam to Berth forty-four. But the gross tare displacement registered at the Narrows customs checkpoint is forty-two tons lighter than standard structural displacement for that hull class.”

Barrett’s arrogant smirk slid off his face. His hands began to tremble so violently he dropped his gold Dunhill lighter onto the obsidian table.

Willa zoomed into the customs clearance stamps. “Furthermore, the bonded broker signature on page twelve is registered to an unbonded offshore entity—Vance Maritime Holdings, incorporated in Grand Cayman. Steel parts do not lose forty tons of weight crossing the Atlantic, gentlemen. Unless the containers were emptied at sea and replaced with high-yield undeclared military contraband.”

Marcus Reed tapped his tablet. Encrypted offshore bank receipts synchronized directly to the council displays.

“Forty million dollars in shadow tariffs,” Marcus announced coldly, “diverted directly from the shared council treasury into Barrett Vance’s private Zurich accounts over the last ninety days.”

A dead, suffocating silence gripped the chamber. Elder Castiglione slowly extinguished his Cohiba in the crystal ashtray. His face darkened with venomous disgust.

“You brought us into this chamber to impeach the Don, Barrett,” Castiglione growled, “while your hand was buried up to the elbow in our shared vault.”

Castiglione grabbed his wooden gavel and slammed it down with concussive force. “The petition to strip Berth forty-four is dismissed. Vance Maritime is placed under immediate financial freeze. And as for Miss Bennett… her acumen has earned her an executive seat at Kendrick’s right hand. Conclave adjourned.”

The elders rose and exited, completely ignoring Barrett. Kendrick stepped to Willa’s side. He rested a heavy, warm hand over hers beneath the table, his eyes burning with absolute pride. “Brilliant, Willa. Utterly brilliant.”

In the marble elevator foyer outside, Kendrick stepped slightly ahead to give tactical instructions to Marcus. Barrett Vance lunged, intercepting Willa near the elevator doors. His face was ashen, his collar choking his heavy neck as sweat pooled beneath his silk tie. His breath smelled of stale whiskey and fear.

“You think you’re clever, little girl,” Barrett hissed, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. “You think reciting numbers makes you a Queen in this town.”

He leaned in close, delivering a venomous, sulfurous whisper. “Shipping containers aren’t the only things that burn at Red Hook, Miss Bennett. Let’s see if your brilliant little brain keeps you breathing on the drive to Brooklyn.”

The elevator chime rang, but the air turned to ice. Titan snarled from behind Kendrick, lunging violently against his lead. Barrett scrambled backward, slipping through the emergency stairwell door.

Kendrick wheeled around, his eyes locking onto Willa. The predator relaxation was gone, replaced by pure tactical lethality. “We leave for Red Hook now. Marcus, bring the heavy armor.”
