Chapter 1: The Choice at Table 9
Eighty-eight floors above Midtown Manhattan, torrential rain lashed the reinforced panoramic glass of The Apex Ballroom. Distant lightning split the pitch-black Atlantic sky, casting sharp, brief illumination over three cascading Austrian crystal chandeliers. Below the crystal, fifteen heiresses shimmered in champagne silks and platinum chokers, resembling gilded statues in a museum of excess.
Willa Bennett navigated the perimeter, balancing an oval silver tray loaded with twelve flutes of Dom Pérignon. Her arches burned after fourteen hours on cold Carrara marble. Her lower back throbbed with a dull ache. Dressed in an ill-fitting black polyester catering vest, a rolled-cuff cotton shirt, and scuffed non-slip black flats, she kept her chin angled down exactly twenty degrees—the precise angle to avoid direct eye contact while maintaining situational awareness of the exits. The heavy fog of expensive French tuberose perfume mingled with the warm scent of white-truffle canapés and spilled vintage Pinot Noir, a suffocating atmosphere she navigated with practiced invisibility. Her only goal: finish the shift, collect her $180 cash envelope, and pay rent on her Astoria walkup.
Alyssa Vance, radiant in a champagne-silk Dior gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals, threw her head back in a shrill laugh. Surrounded by sycophants, she deliberately stepped backward. Her elbow drove hard into Willa’s shoulder.
A single drop of champagne sloshed from a flute, landing dead center on the billowing silk hem of Alyssa’s gown.
Alyssa wheeled around. Her peach-lacquered nails dug into her expensive silk, a blotchy red flush creeping over her flawless foundation. “Watch your clumsy hands, scullery girl! This silk costs more than your life.”
The surrounding socialites sneered, their sharp laughter like breaking glass. Willa did not flinch. Her pulse spiked against the hollow of her throat, but her hands remained steady as iron spars. With her free hand, she pulled a pristine linen napkin from her apron pocket. Her voice, when she spoke, was modulated and icy.
“The glass remained upright, Miss Vance. A dry cloth will lift the surface condensation before it touches the weave.”
Alyssa’s eyes flashed with venomous, entitled rage. She stepped closer, her perfume choking the air. “Get out of my sight before I have security throw you down the freight chute.”
Willa dipped her head with flawless, chilling courtesy. She retreated into the dim perimeter shadows of Table 9, her spine straight as a blade. She smoothed her stained apron with fingers that refused to shake, unaware that across the ballroom, slate-grey eyes had tracked every single second.
Beneath the Austrian crystal chandelier, Kendrick Ashford stood beside the elevated central dais. Imposing and lethal in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, he radiated sovereign authority. Beside his thigh sat Titan, a 150-pound Neapolitan Mastiff in a matte-black Kevlar collar, a low, subterranean vibration rattling in his chest. Tucked against Kendrick’s left hip was five-year-old Penny. She clutched her velvet rabbit, Barnaby, her tiny fingers strangling the plush fabric. Her chest heaved in rapid, shallow tremors, overwhelmed by the sensory onslaught of the ballroom. Marcus Reed tracked sightlines ten paces back, his suit jacket unbuttoned.
Barrett Vance spread a heavy leather portfolio across the obsidian table. The emerald signet ring on his finger glinted under the amber lights. “The Five Families need stability, Kendrick. Three years of mourning is enough. Fifteen daughters of our most prestigious bloodlines stand before you. Alyssa is your Queen. Sign the betrothal charter tonight.”
Kendrick did not glance at the charter. His slate-grey eyes remained completely unblinking. His knuckles whitened slowly as his fingers tightened around a heavy crystal tumbler of Scotch. He set the glass onto the table with a dull, heavy clink.
“You mistake my tolerance for submission, Barrett. None of them.”
Alyssa glided onto the dais. She purred with rehearsed maternal warmth, extending a diamond-draped hand to stroke Titan’s skull, eager to demonstrate domestic mastery to the council. “Come here, sweet boy. You need a mistress who knows pedigree…”
Titan’s upper lips peeled back. A deep, bone-rattling growl vibrated through Alyssa’s heels, flashing three-inch yellowing canines. Alyssa shrieked. She stumbled backward, crashing into Barrett’s arms, her vanity shattered in an instant.
“Stand down, Titan,” Kendrick commanded.
But the war-dog did not settle. His ears pricked forward, fixated on the distant shadows of the service bay.
Kendrick released the braided leather lead. The ballroom fell dead silent. Three hundred aristocrats held their breath as Titan turned his massive blue-brindle bulk away from the dais, completely ignoring the fifteen gasping heiresses. The heavy, rhythmic thuds of his padded paws echoed across the Carrara marble. He cut an eighty-foot diagonal across the ballroom, heading straight for the service bay of Table 9.
Willa froze against the service station. Her heart hammered against her ribs. The silver key beneath her shirt burned against her skin. She mapped the exits, but there was nowhere to run. Titan halted inches from her apron.
Slowly, deliberately, the terrifying war-dog lowered his massive head. He rested his heavy jaw squarely across the worn toes of Willa’s shoes. He exhaled a warm, deep snuffle, yielding to total, peaceful submission. The coarse, wire-stiff bristle and radiating furnace heat of his neck pressed against her ankles.
A sharp gasp echoed across the hall.
Penny broke from Kendrick’s side. Her patent-leather shoes pattered rapidly across the marble. She ignored Alyssa’s outstretched hand and Barrett’s shout. The little girl threw herself against Table 9, burying both small hands into Willa’s black apron.
Willa dropped instantly to her knees, heedless of the ruined polyester fabric. Her silver tray clattered safely onto the linen-covered table. She gathered Penny’s trembling frame into her arms, shielding her from the chandelier glare.
“You’re safe, little bird,” Willa whispered, her voice radiating pure maternal warmth. “I’ve got you. Nobody is going to hurt you.”
Penny pulled back slightly. Her hazel-green eyes locked onto Willa’s stormy grey-blue gaze. Her small throat worked, fighting through three years of trauma and silence. The sharp intake of breath filled the silence. Then, in a clear, ringing child’s voice that carried into every corner of the vaulted room, she spoke.
“I want her, Daddy.”
Stunned gasps rippled through the room. Alyssa Vance’s face turned a blotchy, furious crimson. Her nails clawed at the air. “Security! That gutter rat drugged the dog! She poisoned Titan with tainted meat! Arrest her! Drag her out in handcuffs!”
Barrett signaled four private Vance security guards. They drew heavy zip-ties and reached for concealed holsters, advancing menacingly toward Willa at Table 9.
A sharp, gunshot-like crack echoed through the hall. Kendrick slammed his heavy platinum signet ring onto the marble balustrade. He strode across the ballroom floor like an apex predator, long, lethal strides eating the distance. Marcus Reed unbuttoned his jacket, his hand resting on his Kimber .45.
Kendrick stepped directly between the advancing guards and Willa. Titan rose to his feet, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Don. He barked once—a concussive boom that rattled the glassware.
The guards froze, terror draining the color from their faces.
Kendrick’s baritone dropped an octave, an acoustic shockwave gravelly and absolute. “If anyone touches that girl… or my dog… they’ll regret how they leave this building. She stays.”
He turned his back on the Council, ignoring Barrett’s sputtering rage. Kendrick looked down at Willa, still kneeling on the marble with Penny clutched safely in her lap. The frost in his slate-grey eyes fractured, replaced by something fierce and unyielding.
He extended his large, warm, calloused hand down to her.
“On your feet, Miss Bennett. You’re coming home with us.”
