Volume 1 Chapter 5: The Red Carpet Showdown & The Forensic Projection
Vanguard guards and NYPD officers converged on the limestone staircase, moving to seize Julian and Nora.
Julian calmly reached into his tuxedo breast pocket and produced a heavy, blue-backed legal folder, thrusting it into the chest of the lead NYPD Lieutenant.
“Emergency temporary restraining order, signed twenty minutes ago by the Chief Judge of the Southern District of New York,” Julian declared, his commanding baritone carrying effortlessly over the shouting press.
The Lieutenant scanned the federal seal, his eyes widening. He raised a hand, ordering the Vanguard operatives to stand down.
Julian and Nora ascended the grand staircase and crossed the threshold into the Great Hall. The soaring limestone arches echoed as five hundred conversations died into an abrupt silence.
Richard Vance shoved his way through the elite crowd, his tuxedo straining across his chest. “You have no shame, Julian,” Richard hissed. “Dragging a broke downtown picture-framer into the Metropolitan Museum? She is a nobody from Carmine Street. She doesn’t belong in this room, and neither do you.”
Nora didn’t raise her voice. She stood as straight and unyielding as a marble column in her liquid-sapphire gown. “A picture frame exists to protect and honor what is real, Mr. Vance,” Nora stated, her slate-gray eyes locking onto his. “You spent your entire life building a golden frame around nothing. And tonight, you’re just empty glass waiting to shatter.”
Richard’s mouth opened, but he had no counter. Julian escorted Nora past him into the Temple of Dendur.
Five hundred elite guests gathered in the glass atrium surrounding the ancient Egyptian sandstone monument. Richard took the crystal podium to announce the Article 14-B proxy signing.
Nora touched her wrist and clicked the hidden transponder in her platinum bracelet.
Outside, Priya triggered the microwave uplink. The massive 200-inch 4K Christie screens and live television feeds across the globe were instantaneously hijacked. Nora’s 600-DPI charcoal portrait of Julian filled the displays in crystal clarity.
Nora and Julian took the center dais. Nora’s voice rang through the acoustic reflection pool, steady and sovereign.
“Item one,” Nora announced, tapping her tablet to zoom the projection to Julian’s sketched wrist. “Eight hours, fourteen minutes, and twenty-two seconds on Tuesday morning. This timestamp proves Julian Vance was physically trapped inside a moving subway car at the exact millisecond forty million dollars was siphoned from Vance Capital via a public Wi-Fi terminal.”
She swiped the screen, magnifying the subway window reflection. “Item two. Facial recognition overlay confirms the diagonal surgical cheek scar and monogrammed Goyard case belonging to Marcus Croft—Richard Vance’s personal bagman.”
Nora’s gaze shifted to Richard, who gripped the crystal podium in sheer panic.
“Item three,” Nora continued, projecting a high-resolution surveillance photograph from a Zurich bullion depository. The image zoomed in on the suspect’s left wrist. “An antique rose-gold Cartier cufflink with a distinctive triangular scratch. The exact cufflink currently resting on Vice Chairman Richard Vance’s wrist.”
The hall erupted. Flashbulbs detonated in a blinding storm.
Senior independent director Arthur Sterling stepped onto the stage, taking the adjacent microphone. “I personally wired the one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to One Times Square to give Julian the platform he needed. I hereby formally revoke my proxy under Article Fourteen-B, and move for the immediate federal referral of Richard Vance!”
The seven uncommitted board members surged forward, publicly signing proxy revocations on live television. Richard stood entirely disgraced.
Cornered, Richard caught the eye of his Vanguard tactical commander on the upper mezzanine. Richard made a vicious, rapid cutting motion across his throat.
Julian spotted the movement instantly.
Deep in the museum sub-basement, transformers blew with a concussive thwack. The Temple of Dendur plunged into pitch-blackness. Screams echoed off the sandstone.
A deafening gunshot cracked from the mezzanine.
Steel cables screeched and snapped overhead. A massive, two-thousand-pound crystal-and-bronze chandelier plummeted from the forty-foot ceiling, accelerating directly toward Nora.
“Nora!” Julian roared, diving through the absolute darkness to tackle her to the marble floor.
