Volume 1 Chapter 2: The Alleyway Interrogation & The Boardroom Coup

The Stranger on Times Square 2 of 6

Julian Vance pulled Nora into the rear cabin of the matte-black Mercedes-Maybach S680. The vacuum-sealed doors engaged with a heavy acoustic thud, instantly severing the roar of the Manhattan rain. The cabin bathed them in a crimson tactical LED dome light, the rich scent of Nappa leather and damp wool filling the compressed space.

Julian raised a black cylindrical RF wand, sweeping the sensor within an inch of Nora’s collar. The device let out a low, rhythmic electronic chirping.

Nora didn’t flinch away. Her hand snapped up, her palm striking the scanner and knocking it cleanly from Julian’s grip. The metal wand bounced off the seat and clattered into the footwell.

Malik’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, his hands tight on the steering wheel, but Julian raised a single gloved finger, keeping the ex-special forces driver motionless.

“Don’t touch me with your corporate paranoia,” Nora said. Her voice dropped into a low, cutting frequency that resonated in the sealed car. She thrust both hands forward, inches from his face. The whorls of her fingerprints and the edges of her cuticles were stained deep with charcoal dust.

“I am a picture framer from Carmine Street,” Nora continued, holding his golden-amber gaze without blinking. “I make seventy-five thousand dollars a year, I pay rent on a walk-up with radiator clanks, and I made the mistake of thinking an exhausted man on the two train had a human soul. If I were an operative working for your enemies, do you honestly think I’d spend two hours rendering your cheekbones in four-B graphite and sign my business address on a forty-foot screen?”

Julian looked at her hands. Then, slowly, he picked up the wet Moleskine from the center console. He flipped past the portrait of his own face, examining the preceding pages. Intimate, detailed sketches of ordinary working-class New Yorkers—a tired nurse on a bench, a street vendor in the snow, a sleeping child.

Julian’s defensive wall cracked. The lethal tension drained from his broad shoulders, replaced by a profound, heavy realization. She was exactly what she claimed to be.

Fifty stories above Park Avenue, the rain battered the floor-to-ceiling glass of Vance Tower.

Richard Vance stood at the head of the seventy-foot walnut table, watching the digital broadcast of One Times Square loop across three 85-inch Bloomberg monitors. He reached up, his left thumb rhythmically turning his antique rose-gold Cartier cufflink. Under the cold halogen downlights, the deep, irregular scratch across the beveled gold face caught the light with every nervous twist.

“Look at him,” Richard said, his tone laden with a heavy, practiced sorrow. He turned to the twelve directors, opening a crimson leather dossier. “When Evelyn passed, it didn’t just hurt him—it broke something structural in his mind. Our CEO is wandering the subway tunnels in rags, allowing street grifters to blast his likeness across Midtown.”

Richard tapped the glossy medical affidavits. “Under Article Fourteen-B of our corporate bylaws, I am formally initiating an emergency petition for Executive Incapacitation. Julian has exactly five days—until Monday at midnight—to appear before this board for a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. If he fails to do so, his voting proxies transfer permanently to me.”

At the far end of the table, senior independent director Arthur Sterling set his bone china teacup into its saucer with a sharp, delicate click. He didn’t pick up the pen.

The Maybach traveled south on 10th Avenue near 38th Street in the grey morning rain.

On the dashboard, an encrypted tactical monitor flashed red. Malik scanned the side mirrors. “Two black Cadillacs trailing from Eighth. Vanguard Global Risk.”

Julian’s amber eyes hardened into flat stone. Richard’s private intelligence fixers. They had monitored Times Square and were moving to eliminate Nora and seize the sketchbook.

The Maybach reached the 34th Street intersection beneath the High Line overpass.

Without warning, the lead Escalade surged forward, executing a brutal PIT maneuver. The heavy SUV slammed into the Maybach’s right rear quarter-panel with a deafening screech of tearing metal. The Maybach spun across the slick wet asphalt, slamming into the concrete K-rail construction barriers.

The second Escalade boxed them in against the concrete. The tinted window lowered two inches. The dark muzzle of a suppressed submachine gun emerged.

Kinetic rounds hammered the ballistic glass inches from Nora’s face. The thick polycarbonate spiderwebbed into a blinding white fracture pattern under the concussive impact.

Julian roared, tackling Nora to the carpeted floorboards, covering her completely with his own six-foot-three frame.

“Malik—ram them!”
