Volume 1 Chapter 3: The Tribeca Safehouse & The Window Reflection
Malik slammed the Maybach’s transmission into reverse, the massive V12 engine roaring. The reinforced steel bumper crushed the grille of the lead Escalade, pinning it against a commercial dumpster. With a brutal spin of the steering wheel, Malik launched the armored vehicle into a high-speed slalom through the slick Gansevoort cobblestones.
They evaded the pursuit through the winding streets of the Meatpacking District, arriving at a discreet cast-iron loading dock on Franklin Street in Tribeca. A biometric scanner bathed the windshield in a green laser, authorizing entry. The heavy hydraulic elevator lowered the vehicle into a subterranean garage.
The private elevator opened into a sprawling, 4,000-square-foot industrial loft. Exposed 19th-century timber beams crossed the ceiling above polished concrete floors. Heavy motorized steel storm shutters engaged with a deep mechanical grinding, sealing the floor-to-ceiling windows from the outside world.
Julian set a first-aid tin on the concrete kitchen island. He opened a sterile antiseptic foil packet, the sharp scent of isopropyl alcohol cutting through the rich aroma of fresh Ethiopian dark roast coffee brewing nearby.
Nora sat on the heavy iron-and-leather barstool, her shoulders carrying a bone-weary tremble. A soft, slate-gray cashmere blanket settled over her back, radiating Julian’s body heat.
Julian knelt beside her, his broad shoulders level with her chest. He tilted her chin upward with his forefinger, his dark skin warm against her jaw. He brought the cotton pad to a shallow glass graze along her left collarbone, sustained when the ballistic window had spiderwebbed.
“This is going to sting,” Julian murmured, his amber eyes locking onto hers.
The alcohol bit into the skin. Nora didn’t flinch, but her breath hitched softly. Julian didn’t pull away. His thumb rested just above her pulse point, feeling the rapid, wild beat against the base of her throat.
“You have remarkable hands, Nora,” Julian whispered, his baritone rough. “Firm. Fearless.”
Nora held his gaze. “In my line of work, if your hand shakes, the frame is ruined.”
Over coffee at the concrete island, Julian formally introduced himself. Julian Vance, CEO of Vance Capital Management, overseeing forty billion in assets. He explained Richard’s four hundred and twenty million dollar embezzlement, and the Article 14-B incapacitation coup Richard launched using the tragedy of Evelyn Vance’s death as a smokescreen.
In return, Nora shared her own guarded truth—the devastation of her ex-husband stealing her early fine art portfolio in Chelsea five years ago, reducing her to framing other people’s work. The shared pain of exploitation forged an unbreakable foundation of mutual respect between them in the quiet loft.
By two in the afternoon, Julian led Nora into his drafting studio. The 8000K daylight lightbox flooded the room in crisp, surgical white illumination. Julian placed Nora’s Moleskine onto the flatbed of a 50MP Hasselblad macro scanner.
They stood shoulder-to-shoulder before dual 32-inch 4K calibrated monitors, magnifying the Moleskine drawing at eight hundred percent.
“Look here,” Nora said, tapping the left screen with a wooden stylus.
The macro lens resolved the fine, hairline strokes on the watch dial on Julian’s sketched wrist. The second hand rested precisely at 8:14:22 AM, just above the interlocking JV crest.
Julian’s fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up Vance Capital’s server logs. “At eight hours, fourteen minutes, and twenty seconds on Tuesday, an unauthorized transfer routed fifty million dollars out of our reserve from a public Wi-Fi node inside the seventy-second street subway station. This drawing proves I was on the express track at the exact second the wire executed. I have an airtight alibi.”
Nora dragged the stylus to the shaded rectangle representing the train window. “Look at the reflection behind your left shoulder.”
Julian’s breath stopped. The sharp contours of a narrow face, a diagonal surgical scar across the left cheek, and a monogrammed Goyard leather case emerged from the crosshatches.
“Marcus Croft,” Julian stated, his voice dropping into cold, lethal certainty. “Richard’s chief financial fixer. He was shadowing me to stage the Wi-Fi ping.”
Midnight approached. Nora and Julian sat side-by-side at the drafting table, enhancing contrast lines with 6B graphite. The magnetic tension between them built in the quiet isolation. Julian reached out, his thumb gently wiping a smudge of charcoal from Nora’s cheek. Their eyes locked. He leaned in, the scent of cedarwood washing over her.
Nora’s phone rang loudly on speakerphone.
“Nora!” Priya’s voice screamed through the receiver.
The visceral sound of splintering timber and breaking display glass echoed over the line. Armed Vanguard mercenaries were smashing through Aster & Vane’s storefront.
“Find the original sketchbooks!” a mercenary barked in the background. “Search the back vault! Burn the rest to the ground!”
A heavy thud resounded, and the phone disconnected to a dead dial tone.
