Volume 1 Chapter 4: The Smear Campaign & The Met Gala Infiltration

The Stranger on Times Square 4 of 6

The glossy front page of the New York Post lay flat against the mahogany table in the Carlyle Hotel Presidential Suite. Bold black letters screamed: THE BILLIONAIRE & THE DOWNTOWN GRIFTER. The media saturation was total, branding Nora Bellamy an opportunistic fraud and Julian Vance a mentally unhinged billionaire unfit for command.

Priya Patel stood near the suite window, a bruised scrape along her cheekbone, but her eyes blazed with victorious adrenaline. Nora wept in relief, wrapping her arms tightly around Priya, mourning the destroyed framing tables at Aster & Vane.

Priya pulled back with a triumphant grin and produced a ruggedized SSD drive. “They burned fifty dollars in pine moldings, Nora. Before I even left for Times Square yesterday, I scanned every single page of your Moleskine in 600-DPI RAW format and uploaded it to an encrypted Swiss cloud vault. Richard’s thugs destroyed nothing.”

Julian stood near the doorway, expressing deep admiration for Priya’s brilliant foresight. Richard Vance’s tactical raid was an utter failure.

On the suite’s monitors, Richard Vance appeared live on Bloomberg. Standing before Vance Tower, Richard solemnly announced that the Article 14-B proxy signing would take place Monday evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Spring Benefactor Gala, formalizing Julian’s removal before the midnight deadline.

“Civil litigation takes six months,” Julian explained, adjusting his cuffs with deliberate calm. “By then, Richard will have liquidated four hundred and twenty million dollars into Cayman shells.”

Nora’s posture straightened, adopting the sovereign poise of a sculptor. “Then we don’t wait for the courts. We stage a trial tonight.”

By late afternoon, the tactical assembly moved back to the Tribeca loft. Priya secured an armored broadcast production van equipped with unjammable microwave uplinks capable of overriding global financial newsrooms. Nora meticulously prepared the forensic visual slide deck—the 8:14:22 AM timestamp, the Marcus Croft window reflection, and the Zurich security footage.

Julian approached Nora, handing her a bespoke platinum bracelet. “This contains a hidden micro-transponder. Clicking it inside the Temple of Dendur will trigger Priya’s satellite override.”

The master dressing room door swung open with the soft whisper of heavy silk against oak.

Julian, adjusting the onyx studs of his Brioni tuxedo shirt, turned. His hands froze at his collar.

Nora stepped into the warm light. The bespoke midnight-blue silk satin gown draped across her slender frame like liquid sapphire. The architectural neckline framed her collarbones with classical grace. Her honey-brown hair was pinned into an intricate chignon. She possessed an absolute, sovereign radiance that commanded the room.

Julian walked toward her, producing a velvet box. Inside lay a vintage Cartier necklace—a ribbon of platinum set with brilliant-cut diamonds and a flawless pear-shaped Ceylon sapphire.

He stepped behind her. The warmth of his broad chest radiated against her bare shoulders as his fingers lifted her hair, the electric brush of his knuckles sending a shiver through her collarbones. The cold platinum settled against her throat.

“Tonight, they will try to call you a grifter,” Julian murmured, his baritone rough with fierce devotion. “But when you walk into that museum, Nora… you aren’t just an artist. You are the truth. And I will protect you with everything I am.”

“Then let’s go show them what truth looks like,” Nora whispered.

The armored town car slid to a halt at 82nd and Fifth Avenue. Four hundred photographers pressed against velvet stanchions, their motorized shutters hissing in unison. High-intensity television floodlights turned the night into blinding white noon.

Julian emerged, offering his gloved hand. When Nora stepped onto the red carpet in her liquid-sapphire gown, the roar of the press corps fractured into stunned silence, followed by a deafening wall of shouts.

Fifty yards up the grand limestone staircase, Richard Vance stood before a bank of CNBC microphones, laughing smoothly. The sudden roar caused his head to snap around.

The charming smile died. The color drained from his sallow skin. His fingers jerked to his left wrist, frantically twisting the scratched Cartier cufflink.

“Arrest that woman!” Richard bellowed over the balcony railing, pointing at Nora as Vanguard guards and NYPD officers moved in. “She is committing felony extortion! And take Mr. Vance into immediate psychiatric custody under emergency court order—NOW!”
