Chapter 5: Ledgers of Deceit in the Lions’ Den

The Silver Locket Heiress 5 of 6

The oppressive, high-altitude atmosphere inside the 68th-floor Executive Boardroom of Moretti Global Tower felt heavy enough to suffocate. Sixty-eight floors above Wacker Drive, the relentless rain pounded against the panoramic frosted smart-glass partitions.

Around the forty-foot polished walnut conference table, thirty executives and proxy directors sat in tense silence. The air smelled of polished walnut oil, hot espresso steaming from porcelain carafes, laser-printer toner, and the sour scent of nervous sweat from proxy directors caught in the middle of a syndicate power struggle.

At exactly 10:00, Matteo DeMarco stood at the head of the table. He adjusted his titanium Cartier glasses, a smug predator in a Savile Row pinstripe suit. He leaned forward, surveying the nervous board members.

“Mr. Moretti has chosen not to respect our time,” Matteo began, his velvet-toned voice oozing false sympathy. “Therefore, I formally introduce Article 12. We must conclude that Don Vincent’s recent… domestic instability… makes him unfit to steward Moretti Global’s maritime clearance. I move to transfer Great Lakes maritime logistics to Aegis Logistics.”

Before a single proxy could raise a hand to vote, the heavy, frosted motorized glass doors glided open with a mechanical hiss.

Vincent strode into the boardroom. He wore an imposing charcoal Brioni suit that seemed to absorb the light in the room, his jaw locked in granite authority. He radiated absolute, lethal dominance.

On his arm, moving with regal composure, was Isabella Romano.

She wore a bespoke midnight-navy Italian wool power suit tailored flawlessly to her voluptuous curves, accented with rich emerald silk lapels. Her dark raven waves were pinned elegantly at the nape of her neck. The antique silver locket rested proudly against her collarbone, catching the harsh glare of the boardroom’s LED lights. She looked magnificent, commanding the space without saying a word.

The boardroom fell dead silent. Lawyers stopped shuffling papers. Proxy directors stared openly.

From the leather observer gallery in the back corner of the room, Vivian DeMarco leaned forward in her tight tweed skirt suit. She let out a sharp, derisive laugh, attempting to puncture the heavy silence.

“Did you really drag your kitchen maid off the floor into a multi-billion-dollar board meeting, Vincent?” Vivian sneered, her voice shrill and desperate. “Does she even know how to spell ‘fiduciary’?”

Vincent stopped at the center of the walnut table. He did not raise his voice, but the cold finality of his tone sucked the air from the room. “Sit down, Vivian. Before I have you removed in zip-ties.”

Vivian’s face flushed scarlet, and she snapped her mouth shut, shrinking back into the leather chair.

Isabella released Vincent’s arm and stepped up to the integrated biometric lectern with calm, unhurried grace. She ignored the frantic, whispered sneers of Matteo’s legal counsel. She placed Vincent’s encrypted tablet on the dock and paired it with the dual 98-inch 4K touchscreen presentation screens behind her.

The massive displays illuminated instantly, flooding the dim room with high-resolution bank routing charts, certified check vouchers, and wire transfer logs.

“If Miss DeMarco is concerned with literacy,” Isabella stated, her voice clear, articulate, and unwavering, “perhaps she should explain why Aegis Logistics Account #4409 has processed thirty-two consecutive transfers of exactly twelve thousand five hundred dollars, routed directly through the domestic maintenance ledger of Belladonna House to a private entity in Galena, Illinois.”

Without glancing back at the 4K screens, Isabella began reciting the transaction codes from memory. Her photographic recall deployed like a scalpel, peeling back the layers of corporate fraud. She listed fifteen exact routing sequences, timestamps, and digitized signature stamps matching Mrs. Gable’s authorizations.

She tapped a single command on the tablet. The screen displayed the ultimate destination of the siphoned $3.2 million: a private post box registered to a Cayman Islands shell corporation held under the name M. DeMarco Holdings LLC.

The proxy board members turned pale. Matteo’s chief legal counsel shot out of his chair, frantically whispering into Matteo’s ear. The attorney’s hands were shaking as he realized that continuing the Article 12 motion under the shadow of certified federal wire fraud would trigger immediate RICO indictments for everyone in the room.

Matteo’s face shifted from smug, unassailable arrogance to a sickening shade of gray ash. His hands gripped the walnut table tightly.

The proxy directors, terrified of federal prison, hastily jabbed their biometric voting keys. A red wave washed over the digital tally board. Article 12 was unanimously rejected.

Vincent rose to his full 6’3″ height. He lifted his hand and slammed his open palm onto the polished walnut table with the concussive force of an iron gavel. The porcelain espresso carafes rattled violently.

“The motion is dead,” Vincent declared. His obsidian eyes locked onto Matteo. “By unanimous vote of the founding trust shares, Matteo DeMarco is hereby removed from this board effective immediately. Luca, purge this room.”

The heavy boardroom doors opened again. Luca and six armed Moretti security guards poured into the room, their hands resting on their tactical holsters. They surrounded Matteo and Vivian, effectively corralling them toward the elevators. The executives around the table watched in terrified silence as the DeMarcos were stripped of their corporate empire.

Matteo moved toward the vestibule, adjusting his Cartier glasses with shaking fingers. As he passed the doorway threshold, he abruptly stopped, stepping right beside Isabella.

Luca moved to intercept, but Matteo leaned close to Isabella’s ear. The smell of stale Cohiba cigar smoke and bitter bile washed over her.

“You have your mother’s insolent eyes, little girl,” Matteo hissed, his voice a venomous whisper that sent a spike of ice through her veins. “She stood in this very room and defied me, too—right before Pilsen burned to ash. Enjoy your diamonds while you can. Fire has a way of coming back for what it missed.”

Vincent surged forward in lethal, explosive fury. He grabbed Matteo by the lapels of his Savile Row suit and physically shoved him backward into the elevator lobby, tossing him like a ragdoll.

“Get him out of this building before I throw him out the window,” Vincent snarled at Luca.

Isabella stood completely frozen beside the biometric lectern. Her pulse hammered against her carotid artery, her lungs seizing as the terrifying truth hit her: Matteo didn’t just steal the Romano trust. He had ordered the fire that allegedly killed her mother. He was the architect of her destruction.

Isabella watched the mirrored elevator doors close on Matteo DeMarco’s sneering silhouette, his parting whisper echoing in her ears like a death knell: Right before Pilsen burned to ash.

Vincent stepped in front of her, his hands coming up to cup her face with fierce, protective urgency. His obsidian-grey eyes searched hers, burning with an unshakeable promise.

“He’s cornered, Isabella,” Vincent said, his voice deep and steady as granite. “In forty-eight hours, the entire Midwest syndicate and Chicago high society gather at the Palmer House Gala. That is where we end him once and for all.”

Across the city at DeMarco Manor, Matteo tossed his phone onto his desk, his silver goatee tightening into a sadistic grin as he dialed his private contractor.

“Get the Galena file,” Matteo barked into the receiver. “If Vincent wants to crown his little queen at the Palmer House, we’ll make sure her mother pays the price.”
