Chapter 3: The DeMarco Cover-Up & The Midnight Break-In

The Silver Locket Heiress 3 of 6

The subterranean corridor of Belladonna House smelled of damp concrete, bleached linens, and the distinct, sulfurous bite of an unlit thermite flare.

At 02:00, the darkness of the Servants’ Sub-Level was fractured by the muffled, rhythmic phut-phut of suppressed gunfire. The green phosphor flash of night-vision scopes cut through the shadows.

Inside Isabella’s small concrete room, three cleansers in black tactical gear were rapidly tearing apart her meager belongings. The rusted metal locker lay overturned. The lead operative had just raised an incendiary thermite canister, ready to pull the pin and ignite the small, windowless space.

Luca and two of Moretti’s tactical operators struck from the boiler alcove.

Two swift, suppressed rounds neutralized the flanking guards before they could raise their weapons. As the lead operative spun around, Luca surged forward. He swept the man’s legs out from under him, driving him hard to the concrete floor, and pinned his neck beneath a heavy combat boot. The thermite canister rolled harmlessly into the corner.

Vincent and Isabella reached the doorway. Isabella’s heart pounded against her ribs, her breath catching at the sight of the masked intruders pinned to her floor.

Vincent stepped into the room, his face impassive. He checked the lead operative’s tactical vest, extracting a heavy, DeMarco-encrypted burner phone and an authentic brass master key ring from Belladonna’s domestic ring. He tossed the phone to Luca.

“Target secured, Don Vincent,” Luca said, his voice a tight, professional rasp. “They were carrying military thermite. They came to turn this room into ash.”

Vincent studied the brass keys in his palm. “They did not pick these locks from the outside,” he stated, his voice dangerously soft. “Someone opened the servant entrance from the inside.”

Outside in the laundry junction, heavy footsteps announced the arrival of two more guards dragging Head Housekeeper Mrs. Gable. She was shivering violently in a flannel dressing gown, her face drained of color as she stared at the bodies on the floor.

Vincent walked toward her, holding up the brass master keys. He did not raise his voice, but the freezing, low-voiced interrogation stripped the air from the room.

“Mr. DeMarco said she was just an orphan nobody!” Mrs. Gable wept, collapsing to her knees on the damp concrete. She clutched her flannel robe, tears streaming down her face. “He said if I gave him the keys tonight, my boy’s debt was clean! Two hundred and fifty thousand, Don Vincent! I had no choice!”

“You sold twenty-four years of this girl’s life for horse betting,” Vincent said, his expression devoid of mercy. “Take her away.”

As the guards dragged the weeping housekeeper toward syndicate processing, Isabella moved past the overturned locker. She stepped toward the soot-stained boiler pipe in the far corner of the room. Her hands were shaking.

She knelt and wedged her fingers into the narrow gap beside a loose red brick, pulling it free. From the dark cavity, she retrieved a rusted English toffee biscuit tin that had been hidden there for five years.

She opened the tin. The scrape of the rusted iron hinges echoed in the quiet room. Inside, wrapped in protective plastic, lay three items: a yellowed baptismal certificate from St. Michael’s Parish, a faded 1998 black-and-white photograph of Teresa holding baby Isabella, and Cook County Death Certificate #98-4402.

Vincent knelt beside her, his presence a towering wall against the cold dampness of the room. He reached out and gently took the death certificate from her trembling fingers. He inspected the paper, his eyes narrowing at the signature at the bottom.

“If Dr. Harold Hayes signed this certificate,” Vincent murmured, the lethal realization solidifying in his chest, “then Teresa Romano never died in that fire.”

Isabella stared at him, the air leaving her lungs.

At 03:15, inside the Velvet Vault VIP Penthouse in River North, Chicago, the air was thick with Cohiba cigar smoke and the scent of peaty 30-year single-malt Scotch. The heavy burgundy velvet drapes were drawn shut.

Matteo DeMarco stood by the exposed brick wall in a pristine Savile Row pinstripe suit and titanium glasses. He had just received confirmation on his secure line: the cleansers were eliminated, and Mrs. Gable was in Moretti custody.

Matteo hurled his crystal tumbler against the brick wall. It shattered with a violent crash, splattering aged Scotch and glass shards across the hardwood floor.

In a leather armchair nearby, Vivian DeMarco wept loudly, her mascara smeared across her pale face as she nursed her bruised ego. “I’m ruined, Papa! The entire Gold Coast saw him throw that ring! My reputation is destroyed!”

Matteo slapped the mahogany table with a thunderous roar, rattling the crystal decanter. “Shut your mouth about your reputation, Vivian!” he bellowed. His polished veneer cracked into brutal, frantic urgency. “If Vincent proves that maid is Teresa’s daughter before her twenty-fifth birthday in fourteen days, the entire 1.2 billion dollar trust unfreezes! We don’t have months—we have two weeks.”

Vivian recoiled, shrinking into the armchair.

Matteo paced the floor, rubbing the bridge of his nose behind his titanium glasses. The $1.2B Romano-Moretti Heritage Trust carried a statutory default clause: if a maternal heir did not step forward with the lockets by her 25th birthday, the endowment would revert to Matteo as managing trustee. Isabella’s birthday was exactly fourteen days away. If Vincent presented her before the Five Families and unsealed the vault, the DeMarcos would be skinned alive for two decades of fraud.

“Plan B,” Matteo muttered, his eyes dark with syndicate terror. “Call an emergency board meeting at Moretti Global Tower. We freeze his shipping routes under Article 12, and we put contract snipers on Belladonna House tonight.”

At 04:15, dawn began to break over Lake Michigan, casting a pale grey light through the reinforced glass of the Master Study at Belladonna House. The fireplace crackled, warming the quiet sanctuary.

Vincent sat at his mahogany desk, bathed in the glow of a halogen desk lamp. On the green leather blotter, he set Isabella’s Locket (I) and the vault’s Locket (II) side by side under a 10x illuminated jeweler’s loupe.

He leaned over the lens, aligning the microscopic notches on the coin silver hinge casings. When pressed firmly together, the internal watchmaker gears clicked in perfect alignment. An internal precision spring shifted, sliding back a hidden panel inside the dual casing.

Magnified under the lens, an alphanumeric cipher appeared, etched deep into the ancient metal: `ROM-FED-1920-VAULT-09`.

“It’s the master cryptographic key to the Chicago Federal Reserve depository,” Vincent explained softly.

Isabella leaned close to read the engraving. The physical proximity was electric. Vincent’s broad shoulder brushed against hers; she could feel the heat radiating from him, the warmth of his breath near her cheek. The clean scent of lavender soap and gun oil mixed in the air between them.

Beneath the 10x jeweler’s loupe, the interlocked silver lockets gleamed under the halogen desk lamp, the micro-gears resting in perfect alignment over the etched cipher: `ROM-FED-1920-VAULT-09`.

Vincent’s hand covered Isabella’s, his thumb resting gently over her calloused knuckles. His obsidian-grey eyes held a dark, intoxicating promise.

“You’ve spent five years hiding in the basement of this house, Isabella,” Vincent’s low baritone vibrated in the quiet room. “Tomorrow, the finest couturiers in Chicago will arrive at this door. When we walk into Matteo’s boardroom, you will not look like an orphan.”

He tilted her chin upward, his gaze burning into hers. “You will look like the sovereign queen who is about to take back her city.”
