Chapter 4: Silk Over Scars & The Sovereign Makeover
At 14:00 on the third day, the Master Executive Salon of Belladonna House was flooded with warm afternoon sunlight pouring through the arched French windows. The sweeping views of manicured rose gardens and the vast blue expanse of Lake Michigan provided a serene backdrop to the chaotic arrival of Chicago’s top couture team.
Four heavy rolling steel wardrobe vaults had been wheeled onto the fluted walnut floor. The racks were loaded with hundreds of thousands of dollars of Italian silks, French lace, and heavy winter cashmeres. The air smelled of clean textile sizing, cedarwood, and the hot steam from a tailor’s press.
Isabella stood before the triple-gilded rococo mirror, wearing only a plain, oversized cotton bathrobe. For five years, her entire wardrobe had consisted of coarse, grey servant cotton. Hiding in damp concrete basements had conditioned her to shrink, to apologize for her physical space. Now, surrounded by this temple of luxury, she felt like a trespasser in her own skin.
Madame Laurent, the senior stylist from Oak Street, circled Isabella with a measuring tape draped around her neck. Her sharp, critical eyes assessed Isabella’s lush, voluptuous curves with unmistakable disdain, conditioned entirely by size-zero runway standards.
The stylist pulled a heavy steel-boned corset and a restrictive elastic body-shaper from a velvet case. She handed it toward Isabella with a tight, patronizing smile.
“We will have to bind the torso significantly,” Madame Laurent stated, her clipped accent carrying across the quiet salon. “High society does not tolerate excessive volume. If we can compress the waist by two inches, perhaps the midnight gown will zip.”
Isabella’s shoulders tensed. The familiar, burning shame of being reduced to an inconvenient shape surged in her chest. But instead of apologizing, the quiet pride that had kept her spine straight under Vivian’s whip flared to life. She stepped back toward the dressing screen, quiet yet defensive.
“I’ve worn servant cotton for five years,” Isabella said, her voice steady and unapologetic. “I don’t need a dress that stops me from breathing.”
Before Madame Laurent could offer a condescending reply, the salon doors opened.
Vincent strode into the room, having caught the stylist’s remark. His imposing presence instantly froze the air in the salon. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his powerful forearms.
He walked directly to Madame Laurent, took the rigid steel-boned corset from her hands without looking at it, and dropped it straight into the waste bin.
“She is not here to conform to your sample sizes, Madame Laurent,” Vincent declared. His low, uncompromising voice stripped the haughty stylist of all authority. “Tailor every garment to her natural proportions. If a seam cannot accommodate her grace, burn the dress and start over.”
Madame Laurent dropped her tailor pins onto the floor in shock, hurriedly nodding as she reshaped her measuring tape.
Vincent turned his back on the team and personally selected bolts of fabric from the vaults: a deep emerald silk charmeuse, a midnight-navy Italian wool, and rich sapphire velvets. The master seamstress draped the emerald silk across Isabella’s shoulders, pinning it swiftly around her natural curves.
Isabella turned to look into the three-way mirror. The transformation was arresting. The rich emerald green illuminated the warm golden undertones of her olive skin, flowing over her hourglass waist and highlighting her statuesque posture. She looked regal. She looked dangerous.
In the mirror’s reflection, her gaze met Vincent’s obsidian-grey eyes. The raw, breathless reverence in his expression pinned her in place.
“You were never meant to hide in the shadows of this house, Isabella,” he murmured, his voice a velvet hum. “You were built to command it.”
An hour later, Isabella sat in the seating area beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapped in a sapphire cashmere shawl. She sipped Earl Grey tea with lemon zest, the warmth soothing the lingering tension in her chest.
Across the low glass table, Vincent rubbed his temples in frustration. He was reviewing Moretti Global Logistics balance sheets on his encrypted tablet. A $120 million routing deficit, engineered by Matteo DeMarco’s proxy directors, was buried deep in the corporate ledgers. It was the financial leverage Matteo planned to use tomorrow to seize the shipping routes.
Isabella set her teacup down and glanced at the vendor spreadsheet displayed on Vincent’s secondary monitor. Her eyes caught a sequence of numbers.
“Account number 4409-AEG,” Isabella said, her voice cutting through the quiet.
Vincent looked up, his brow furrowed. “It’s a maritime freight supplier operating out of a shell corp. Why?”
Isabella shook her head. “Account #4409 is not a maritime freight supplier. For five years, Mrs. Gable signed off on that exact account in the domestic kitchen books. Exactly twelve thousand five hundred dollars, every month on the fourteenth. The wire transfer always cleared under ‘Aegis Health Group’ in Galena, Illinois, for ‘Patient Martha Vance.'”
Vincent stared at her, utterly astonished by her eidetic recall. He swiftly keyed the parameters into his encrypted database, cross-referencing Belladonna’s domestic operating funds. The ledger populated exactly as she had described: twenty identical transfers, cleanly laundered under the radar of Moretti Global’s executive oversight.
Matteo had been using the estate’s grocery and maintenance budget to fund a secret facility in Galena.
Vincent’s face broke into a slow, dangerous smile. Isabella’s memory had just handed him the exact forensic weapon needed to dismantle Matteo’s corporate takeover.
“Tomorrow, you walk into the lion’s den with me,” Vincent said, his eyes burning with dark triumph. “Not as a witness. As my partner.”
In the dressing alcove, the afternoon sun began to dip, casting long golden shadows across the fluted walnut walls.
Vincent retrieved Isabella’s antique silver locket from a velvet case. He had given it to his private jeweler to be fitted with a custom, heavy platinum link chain.
He stepped behind Isabella. “May I?” he asked quietly.
Isabella nodded, holding her breath.
Vincent reached around her, his broad chest inches from her back, and fastened the platinum clasp around her throat. The cool metal settled against her skin. His warm fingers lingered against the sensitive skin of her nape, resting right above the crescent birthmark hidden by her hair.
Isabella turned to face him. The physical proximity was intoxicating. His dark eyes dipped from hers to her lips, the room crackling with unspoken passion. The scent of lavender soap on her skin mingled with the sharp cedar and gun oil on his collar.
Just as he leaned a fraction of an inch closer, a sharp knock sounded on the heavy salon door.
Luca entered, holding a red encrypted folder. “Don Vincent,” he said, his tone strictly mission-oriented. “Matteo DeMarco has formally called the emergency board meeting. 09:00 tomorrow at Moretti Global Tower. He’s filed an Article 12 hostile motion to seize the shipping routes.”
Vincent stepped back, the sensual tension hardening instantly into granite resolve.
Vincent lowered his hands from the nape of her neck, the silver locket resting over the hollow of Isabella’s collarbone like a badge of royal succession. His obsidian eyes held hers in the golden sunset, the raw, unspoken heat between them thick enough to ignite.
“Get your rest tonight, Isabella,” Vincent said, his baritone dropping to a lethal, velvet whisper. “Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, we walk into Moretti Tower. And Chicago will finally learn what happens when you strike a queen.”
On the desk across the room, the encrypted board docket displayed Matteo DeMarco’s hostile motion, scheduled for 09:00 sharp.
