Chapter 2: The Sanctum Interrogation & The Disputed Heritage

The Silver Locket Heiress 2 of 6

The grand ballroom remained in a state of suspended shock. The silence was thick, broken only by the sound of champagne continuing to pool and spread across the Carrara marble. Vincent stood perfectly still, his eyes fixed on the silver crest against Isabella’s collarbone.

Vivian broke the quiet with a frantic, shrill gasp. Her eyes darted from the locket to the impassive faces of the two hundred guests, and finally to Vincent’s unreadable expression.

“Vincent, you’re being manipulated!” Vivian shrieked, the panic in her voice cracking into desperation. She stepped forward, ignoring the wet silk clinging to her legs. “She’s a domestic thief! She found that piece of junk in the servant quarters! She’s nothing but a dirty maid trying to swindle you!”

Vincent did not raise his voice. He did not argue. He turned his head slowly, taking two deliberate steps into Vivian’s personal space. His towering frame and the lethal stillness of his posture radiated overwhelming physical authority, cutting off her hysterical outburst instantly.

“Give me your hand,” Vincent commanded, his deep baritone leaving no room for refusal.

Vivian hesitated, her jaw trembling as she lifted her left hand.

Without looking at her face, Vincent reached out. His calloused fingers closed over hers. In one smooth, unrelenting motion, he slid the eight-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring off her finger. The friction of metal against skin was the only sound.

He stepped back and opened his right hand, letting the ring fall.

The heavy platinum and diamond band struck the hard Carrara marble with a sharp, ringing tink. It rolled in a tight circle, tink-tink-roll, coming to rest near the puddle of spilled vintage wine and broken crystal.

“This ring was cast for an honorable woman,” Vincent stated, his voice devoid of warmth. “You have proven yourself unworthy of its shadow. Our engagement is dead.”

Vivian’s mouth opened and closed in silent horror before she exploded into gasping sobs. She lunged forward, but Vincent’s enforcer, Luca, intercepted her effortlessly.

Vincent didn’t spare her another glance. He issued the irrevocable command to Luca over the low murmur of the crowd: “Escort Miss DeMarco and her entourage off Moretti land immediately. Any return will be treated as an act of war.”

Security guards flanked Vivian, seizing her arms. She thrashed wildly, mascara streaking down her neck, her high-pitched shrieks echoing off the vaulted ceilings as they dragged her backwards through the carved oak double doors.

Vincent turned back to Isabella. He raised his hand and guided her gently by the elbow. “Come with me,” he said.

He led her away from the center of the ballroom, through a private staff corridor that bypassed the whispering guests, shielding her from their staring eyes. They approached the biometric executive elevator, a brushed-steel car reserved exclusively for the Master Executive Wing. Vincent pressed his palm to the scanner, and the doors slid open silently.

As the elevator ascended to the fourth floor, Isabella remained silent, clutching the torn collar of her coarse grey cotton uniform. The stinging heat of the welt on her cheekbone pounded with her heartbeat. The transition from invisible servant to protected guest was too sudden, too jarring.

The elevator doors opened onto the Master Study. The expansive penthouse suite was a sanctuary of dark, fluted mahogany wainscoting and deep leather Chesterfield sofas. A roaring fire of birch logs crackled in the massive stone hearth, filling the room with the scent of aged cedar and burning wood. Floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass windows overlooked the tumultuous Lake Michigan bluffs, where lightning occasionally fractured the night sky. The sheer opulence and warmth stood in stark, jarring contrast to the cold concrete basement where Isabella had slept on a narrow cot for five years.

Isabella approached the nearest Chesterfield sofa and hesitated, tucking her bare, worn shoes beneath the hem of her skirt. “Mr. Moretti,” she murmured, her voice tight but calm. “Maids aren’t allowed above the second floor. Mrs. Gable will write a reprimand. I… my uniform will ruin the leather.”

Vincent walked to a crystal decanter, poured a glass of water, and handed it to her. His hands were steady. “Mrs. Gable no longer dictates who enters this room,” he said softly. “You are not a maid in this house anymore, Isabella. Sit.”

She sat on the edge of the cushion. Vincent did not call the domestic staff. Instead, he walked to the adjacent en-suite bathroom. He returned a moment later with a clean linen cloth wet with warm water.

He sat beside her on the sofa, testing the temperature of the wet linen against his own wrist before leaning in. With infinite, reverent care, he pressed the warm cloth to her cheek, gently cleaning the mixture of dried blood and champagne from her skin. The rough scrape of linen over the swollen tissue sent a sharp pulse of pain, but Isabella relaxed her clenched jaw, leaning slightly into the unexpected warmth of his touch.

“Why didn’t you report her abuse?” Vincent asked, his dark eyes studying the bruised skin with quiet fury.

Isabella looked at the burning birch logs in the hearth. “Because in this house, maids are invisible,” she said, delivering her core truth without a trace of self-pity. “I’ve survived five years of Miss DeMarco’s temper by being invisible. Invisible people don’t bleed out in the open.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened. “You will never be invisible in my presence again,” he vowed.

A quiet knock at the door preceded the entry of Dr. Nicolas Aris. The trusted personal physician entered with impeccable professional discretion, carrying a stainless steel medical kit. He greeted Vincent with a nod and knelt before Isabella.

Dr. Aris cleaned the welt with sterile alcohol prep pads—the cold sting sharp against her warm skin—and gently dressed the cut with lavender antiseptic ointment. Moving with physician’s precision, he then drew two small vials of blood from her arm for expedited genetic sequencing at Vincent’s private bio-lab.

Once Dr. Aris exited with the courier samples, Vincent walked to the biometric wall safe concealed behind his executive desk. He placed his palm on the scanner. The steel gears whirred, and the heavy door clicked open.

Vincent retrieved a vintage black velvet box and brought it back to the desk, placing it gently before Isabella.

He opened it to reveal Locket II. It was identical to Isabella’s in weight, solid coin silver, and deep patina, bearing the same hand-chiseled Old English ‘M’ framed by twin olive branches. It was micro-stamped with the Roman numeral `II`.

“In 1920,” Vincent began, his baritone filling the quiet room, “Don Salvatore Romano and my grandfather, Don Pietro Moretti, forged a blood pact. These lockets were the seal. Yours is the first.”

Isabella unclasped her own locket from her neck and opened it. Inside, the hand-inscribed cursive was perfectly preserved: “To my starlight — T.R.”

Vincent stared at the inscription, confirming the authenticity. The realization that Isabella was the direct, rightful heir to the Romano dynasty settled between them in the silent room, thick with electric reverence. The heavy chill of the coin silver in Isabella’s palm grounded her to the impossible truth.

Suddenly, the quiet intimacy of the study was shattered by a low, pulsing electronic chime.

On the executive desk terminal, the security grid monitors flashed strobing crimson red.

Vincent turned toward the screen, his expression instantly shifting back to lethal syndicate Don. The camera feeds from the Servants’ Sub-Level flared into sharp view. Three masked operatives in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles had breached the basement hallway and were using a steel crowbar to pry open Isabella’s rusted metal locker.

Isabella gasped in terror, dropping the locket as she pointed at the monitor. “My mother’s things!” she cried. “Behind the loose brick near the boiler hearth… there’s a rusted iron biscuit tin. It has my baptismal certificate. A baby photo. It’s all I have left of her.”

Vincent’s demeanor transformed into cold, unapologetic violence.

On the high-resolution monitor above the mahogany desk, a masked figure in black tactical armor leveled an incendiary thermite canister at the concrete corner of Isabella’s room—directly beneath the hollow brick where her mother’s rusted tin was buried.

Vincent reached into the executive desk drawer, his fingers wrapping around the cold checkered grip of his Sig Sauer. The slide racked back with a lethal, metallic snap.

“Stay behind this door, Isabella,” Vincent commanded, his obsidian eyes burning with cold syndicate fury. “Anyone who came into this house to erase your bloodline will pay for it in bone.”

Down in the concrete corridor below, the first silenced gunshot cracked through the dark.
