Chapter 6: The Boardroom Reckoning & The Sovereign Vow

Take The Ring: The Mafia King’s Reckoning 6 of 6

On the thirty-fifth floor of the Moretti Industries Tower, Roman Castellano paced the head of the gleaming black Italian marble conference table. His heavy gold signet ring rapped sharply against the stone. His disheveled pinstripe suit and torn collar exposed the desperate panic of a cornered animal. Two armed Castellano enforcers blocked the double oak doors.

Eight board members sweated in their tailored suits, staring at the receivership papers Howard Sterling, Roman’s attorney, had tossed onto the table.

“Sign the resolution, gentlemen,” Roman ordered, his voice echoing over the distant hum of Loop traffic outside the panoramic glass. “Evelyn is an emotionally disturbed runaway hiding behind stolen trust codes. If this board does not ratify my leadership in five minutes, you will find your commercial loans called in by lunch.”

Board Member Henderson stood, his pen trembling. “Roman, we cannot legally override a 51% testamentary trust without court confirmation—”

“I am the court in this city, Henderson,” Roman slammed his fist onto the marble. “Sign it.”

Thirty-five floors below on Wacker Drive, Vanessa Lane sat behind the tinted glass of Roman’s armored Cadillac. She stared at the 12-carat sapphire ring on her trembling finger. Nausea twisted her stomach. The dream of high-society queenhood had dissolved into the terrifying reality of federal crimes and mob violence.

Upstairs, the heavy boardroom doors swung open with a resounding CLACK.

Evelyn Moretti entered. She wore a bespoke tailored black silk pantsuit. Her sapphire-gray eyes shone like polished gems, radiating undisputed sovereign majesty. Dante Vale flanked her, towering in a midnight-navy Savile Row suit. His amber-gold eyes locked onto the armed Castellano enforcers. The bodyguards took one look at Dante’s lethal frame and backed away, holstering their weapons.

Arthur Vance followed, carrying certified SEC forensic audit packets.

Evelyn walked to the head of the table. Her spine was straight, her pulse calm and steady. She laid Marco’s platinum Montblanc pen and the certified certificates of Swiss equity before the board secretary.

“Under Article IV of the Moretti Charter,” Evelyn announced, her voice ringing with supreme authority, “I present 51% sole controlling proxies authenticated by Banque Privée Edmond de Rothschild. Roman Castellano, your signatory authority is dead.”

Arthur distributed the audit packets. “These documents confirm Mr. Castellano embezzled sixty-eight point four million dollars from the dockworkers’ pension fund.”

Henderson stared at the numbers in horror.

Evelyn tapped her phone on the table, syncing it to the boardroom sound system. The live burner phone audio from Lake Calumet echoed through the room. Roman’s recorded voice screamed: “Sal! Did you burn the records? Did you get Evelyn? Kill anyone who resists!”

“Good God,” Henderson gasped. “You ordered the burning of our own docks?!”

Evelyn placed her hands on the table. “I call for an immediate vote: total termination of Roman Castellano as CEO, expulsion from the Board, and permanent trespass ban.”

Eight hands went into the air immediately. “Aye!”

Roman snapped. The carotid artery throbbed on his neck. Spit flew from his lips. “You dead bitch! I made you!”

He lunged across the marble table to strangle her.

Dante intercepted him with blinding CQB military speed. He caught Roman by the throat and slammed his back into the marble wall. The sickening THUD vibrated the stone. Dante lifted Roman off his feet, his vice-like grip cutting off the mobster’s frantic air.

“Touch her,” Dante whispered, his voice terrifying in its low, lethal underworld authority, “and I will erase you and your bloodline from this city. You are done, Roman.”

Dante released him. Roman collapsed to his knees, clutching his bruised throat and gasping for air.

Vale security dragged Roman into the elevator and hauled him down to the ground-floor marble lobby on Wacker Drive.

Federal sirens roared outside. Assistant US Attorneys and FBI agents swarmed the lobby. Flashbulbs blinded the room.

An agent stepped forward, handing Roman a stack of heavy paper documents. “Roman Castellano, you are served with federal Grand Jury subpoenas by order of the United States District Court for wire fraud, pension embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit arson. Do not attempt to leave Cook County.”

Roman screamed hoarse, feral threats at the cameras as he was dragged outside. Through the Cadillac window, Vanessa stared in horror as the flashing red and blue lights painted Roman’s ruined face.

That evening, the deep indigo winter sky dusted the city with stars. Thousands of city lights reflected on the frozen Chicago River below the 70th-floor open-air terrace of Vale Tower.

Evelyn stood at the glass balustrade, breathing the crisp winter air. She was the officially confirmed Chairwoman and CEO of Moretti Industries. The skyline opened before her as her kingdom.

Dante stepped onto the terrace. He wore a black dress shirt with the cuffs rolled up, holding an antique velvet box. The scent of aged bourbon and cedarwood followed him.

He opened the box. Resting on the velvet was Marco Moretti’s heirloom Colombian emerald and gold signet key.

“Your father knew this day would come, Evelyn,” Dante said, his voice soft, resonant, and deeply tender. “He trusted me to keep this until you took your throne. You didn’t just reclaim your company today; you reminded this city what a true sovereign looks like.”

Evelyn’s sapphire eyes shone with emotion. She offered a genuine, radiant smile—one she saved only for him. “I couldn’t have done it alone, Dante. Thank you for giving me my freedom.”

Dante took the heavy, cool gold and emerald key and placed it in her palm. His warm, calloused fingers closed gently over hers. “You earned your freedom, Evelyn. From this moment on, you will never fight alone. My fortune, my soldiers, and my life are yours.”

“Then let’s take the rest of Chicago,” she whispered.

Miles away, inside the dark, barricaded study of the Castellano mansion on Astor Street, Roman sat alone with a bottle of scotch. The metallic CLACK of his custom Kimber .45 pistol racking a round into the chamber echoed in the silence. His bloodshot eyes burned with murderous vengeance. The war for the city had just begun.
