Chapter 3: The River North Fortress & The Trust Activation

Take The Ring: The Mafia King’s Reckoning 3 of 6

Evelyn stepped out of the private elevator and into the 70th-floor Triplex Penthouse of Vale Tower. Panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass framed the frozen ribbon of the Chicago River, laying the city beneath her feet. Inside, the sanctuary radiated warmth. A massive black-granite fireplace roared with white birch, casting flickering light over the heated Italian slate floors. Across the open layout, encrypted dual-screen workstations hummed quietly—a war room masquerading as high-rise minimalist luxury.

Dante walked beside her. He had shed his overcoat, his charcoal three-piece suit perfectly tailored, his tie loosened just slightly at the collar. Evelyn wore his heavy cashmere coat draped over her midnight-silk gown.

“Ms. Moretti is the sole commander of this operation,” Dante said. His velvet baritone carried absolute authority. “Every resource of Vale Global Capital is at her command.”

Two figures stood by the primary obsidian conference table. Arthur Vance, Vale’s silver-haired Chief Legal Counsel in a bespoke pinstripe, bowed his head respectfully. Beside him, Elena Ramos, a sharp-eyed former federal forensic auditor, adjusted her dark-rimmed glasses and monitored a massive Zurich fiduciary terminal.

“We have reviewed the late Marco Moretti’s codicil, Ms. Moretti,” Arthur said, tapping a heavy certified legal brief with his fountain pen. “The legal architecture is flawless. We only await midnight.”

“Four years of patience,” Evelyn replied, her sapphire-gray eyes blazing with cold clarity. She walked toward the terminal. “Let’s finish what my father started.”

The digital chronometer on the wall blinked in crimson: 11:59:50 PM.

Evelyn unclasped her satin clutch and withdrew Marco’s encrypted titanium drive. She inserted it into the heavy steel port of the terminal. She pulled the cap off her father’s platinum Montblanc Meisterstück pen. The cool metal grounded her.

11:59:55…

She placed her thumb onto the cold glass of the biometric scanner. The terminal whirred, authenticating her retinal scan.

12:00:00 AM. February 14. Her twenty-fourth birthday.

The crimson screen flashed emerald. The Moretti anchor crest materialized, rotating slowly on the high-definition display.

“Transfer authenticated by Zurich,” Elena stated, her fingers flying across her mechanical keyboard. “51% majority equity transferred. Four hundred million dollar offshore treasury active. The voting proxies are yours, Ms. Moretti.”

Evelyn touched the platinum pen to the formal transfer document and signed her name with steady, decisive strokes. Evelyn Moretti.

“Happy twenty-fourth birthday, Evelyn,” Dante murmured, standing just behind her right shoulder. His amber eyes glowed with fierce pride. “Your father’s crown is back in your hands.”

Evelyn touched the pen to her lips. “Thank you, Papa.” She turned to the workstation. “Cut every line of credit tied to the Moretti name. If Roman wants a single dollar for his syndicate, let him beg the street for it.”

“Directives sent,” Elena confirmed, hitting the final keystroke. Red revocation notices populated the bank clearing networks on the secondary screen. “Roman Castellano is officially insolvent.”

Elena frowned, clicking open a forensic audit file. “Ms. Moretti, look at this. The Cayman shell transfers highlight massive discrepancies. Roman didn’t just drain corporate accounts. He embezzled sixty-eight point four million from the Moretti dockworkers’ pension fund. He used it to cover personal debts and syndicate payroll.”

Evelyn reviewed the digital ledger, her pulse slowing into laser focus. “He didn’t just steal from my family; he robbed our dockworkers. Tomorrow, we take this to the public.”

“The physical shipping manifests proving Roman’s contraband smuggling are held at Lake Calumet Terminal,” Arthur Vance noted, marking a legal injunction with his pen. “Loyal dock foreman Joe Callahan holds the master vault keys.”

“Arthur, prepare an emergency board meeting for forty-eight hours from now,” Evelyn commanded. “We remove Roman as CEO.”

Across the river, on Astor Street, the Castellano mansion suffocated under claustrophobic mahogany and stale cigar smoke.

Roman Castellano paced the Persian rug like a wounded beast. His tie hung loose, his collar soaked with cold sweat. He tipped a heavy crystal tumbler back, downing Macallan 25 in a violent gulp. The amber liquid splattered across the antique oil paintings on the wall.

On the velvet armchair, Vanessa Lane shivered in her plunging red silk gown. The 12-carat sapphire ring hung loosely on her trembling finger.

The speakerphone on the mahogany desk crackled with the frantic, hyperventilating voice of Carmine, Roman’s top banker at Northern Trust.

“Roman, we’re locked out!” Carmine shouted. “The Swiss trust activated! Evelyn owns 51% of everything! The Federal Reserve clearing just bounced your corporate black cards. You don’t have enough liquid cash to pay your morning security detail!”

Roman slammed his fist into the desk, the wood groaning. “Transfer the emergency five million to the North Side payroll! Now!”

“I tried! The system returned a hard decline! Signatory revoked, Roman! You have zero access!”

With a feral roar, Roman hurled his crystal tumbler against the wall. It shattered with a violent CRACK, sending jagged glass shards raining onto the Persian rug. The sharp sting of broken glass hit Roman’s expensive shoes.

“That bitch!” Roman snarled, veins bulging at his temples. “She planned this! I will put a bullet through her skull before she takes one dime of my empire!”

Vanessa flinched, shrinking back into the velvet. “Roman… baby, my boutique card just bounced when I tried to order the celebratory champagne…”

Roman turned on her slowly. His hazel eyes were entirely bloodshot, stripped of all aristocratic pretense, revealing the violent street thug beneath the bespoke suit. He stepped toward her, his heavy frame casting a dark shadow over the armchair.

“Shut your mouth, Vanessa,” Roman growled, his voice a gravelly hiss of pure malice. “Before I throw you out into the snow with her.”
