Chapter 1: The Birthday Execution & The Ring Renunciation

Take The Ring: The Mafia King’s Reckoning 1 of 6

The condensation on the crystal goblet beaded against Evelyn Moretti’s fingertips, sending a sharp bite of cold through her pulse. She sat alone at the center VIP table, a midnight-silk anchor amid the sweeping opulence of the Drake Hotel’s Gold Coast Ballroom. Above her, hand-cut Austrian crystal chandeliers cast fragmented rainbows across the linen. Fifty feet away, towering ice sculptures of the Castellano crest sweat under the glare of stage spotlights, dripping steadily onto beds of Casablanca lilies. The scent of tuberose, spilled Dom Pérignon, and stale cigar smoke hung heavy in the suffocating heat of the room. Outside, a sub-zero Lake Michigan blizzard battered the historic leaded-glass windows, rattling the panes with winter’s fury.

Two hundred black-tie guests—Chicago’s old-money socialites mingling with syndicate capos—fell into a hushed silence as the microphone whined with a faint feedback loop.

Roman Castellano stood at the podium. He wore a bespoke Italian silk-wool pinstripe suit, broad shoulders aggressively square. His jaw ticked, a rhythmic flexing of muscle beneath his tanned skin, and his carotid pulse leaped against the collar line. He rapped his heavy gold family signet ring against the mahogany podium. Beside him, clinging possessively to his arm, stood twenty-two-year-old Vanessa Lane. Her plunging backless red silk gown flashed with ostentatious sequins, clashing violently with the room’s aristocratic restraint.

“My wife Evelyn has given four dutiful years to our union,” Roman’s voice boomed over the speakers, thick with condescending velvet, “but true leadership requires vitality. Tonight, as she marks twenty-four, we release her from the burdens of high society. Join me in welcoming Vanessa Lane to the Castellano table.”

Vanessa leaned forward, her long acrylic nails digging into Roman’s sleeve. She offered a practiced, glossy-lipped smile to the front row. “I’ll take good care of your home, Evelyn. Don’t worry about a thing.”

High-society matrons traded sharp, glittering smirks, turning their gazes toward the center table. They waited for the inevitable breakdown—the public tears, the begging, the scandalous scream that would seal Evelyn’s ruin.

Evelyn’s heart rate dropped to a steady, glacial rhythm. Her diaphragm expanded smoothly beneath the taut silk of her tailored bodice. For four years, she had lived in the gilded cage on Astor Street, counting the days until this exact midnight. She pressed her small satin clutch firmly against her ribs. Inside rested Marco Moretti’s Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pen and an encrypted Swiss titanium drive.

She picked up her crystal glass. With deliberate stillness, she set it down on the bone china saucer. The single, clear chime severed the murmurs in the ballroom like a guillotine blade.

Evelyn rose. Her midnight-chestnut hair spilled in sculpted waves over her bare shoulders, pristine and immovable. She did not look at the matrons. She fixed her sapphire-gray eyes exclusively on Roman.

The soft swish of silk on carpet accompanied her ascent up the marble stairs. The ballroom temperature seemed to drop. A cool air draught from the hallway sliced through the heavy floral perfume, biting against her skin. She stopped directly in the blinding spotlight, inserting herself in the precise space between Roman and his mistress.

Roman’s smirk locked into a rigid grimace. He leaned down, a threatening hiss escaping off-mic. “Sit back down, Evelyn. Don’t make a scene you can’t survive.”

Evelyn maintained complete, chilling silence. She turned her gaze to Vanessa.

Vanessa’s chest heaved. Her rapid, fluttering eyelashes betrayed the creeping terror beneath her heavy foundation.

Evelyn lifted her left hand into the hot glare of the stage lamps. The heavy platinum setting of the historic 12-carat Castellano sapphire caught the light, blazing with blue fire. Her fingers remained completely motionless. She gripped Vanessa’s manicured right wrist, feeling the feverish, clammy pulse beneath her own cool skin. She flipped the younger woman’s palm open.

The heavy, cold weight of the four-generation ring slid over Evelyn’s knuckle. With a sharp, heavy clack, the platinum dropped into Vanessa’s trembling hand.

Evelyn leaned into the live microphone, her low, crisp voice commanding the silent room. “Take the ring. He’s yours.”

A collective gasp ripped from two hundred throats. The rustle of silk and sudden intake of breath magnified over the speakers.

Evelyn turned back to Roman. His hazel eyes widened with murderous fury, veins throbbing at his temples. She offered a faint, detached smile of pure emancipation.

“Evelyn!” Roman choked, his voice raw with sudden panic and rage. “You don’t step away from this family. You don’t have a penny without my name!”

Evelyn turned her back to him. The silk of her gown swept the mahogany floor. She spoke calmly over her shoulder, the words slicing through the heavy air. “You mistook my silence for submission, Roman. It was merely reconnaissance.”

She descended the stage. The crowd scrambled back, parting a wide lane down the center aisle. Behind her, the explosive shatter of a crystal flute against mahogany split the air.

“Move, you idiots!” Roman roared, grabbing Capo Sal by his lapels. “Drag her into the Escalade before the press gets wind of this! If she leaves this building, you don’t see tomorrow!”

“On it, Boss,” Sal barked. “She won’t make it past the steps.”

Evelyn reached the grand foyer. Two broad-shouldered men in charcoal wool coats standing by the mezzanine pillars shifted their stance, tapping their earpieces. She did not pause. She pushed through the heavy bronze revolving doors.

The howling sub-zero Chicago blizzard slammed into her, extinguishing the ballroom heat and rushing into her lungs. The blast of freezing ozone hit her bare skin. Behind her, the heavy boot heels of Sal and his enforcers pounded down the marble corridor. Evelyn stepped into the storm.
