Chapter 2: The Maybach Sanctuary

Take The Ring: The Mafia King’s Reckoning 2 of 6

The sub-zero wind whipped off Lake Michigan, carrying biting shards of snow that obscured the Michigan Avenue traffic. Evelyn Moretti descended the grand exterior limestone staircase of the Drake Hotel, her heels finding desperate traction on the ice-slicked steps. Freezing metallic snow and the stench of auto exhaust burned her lungs. The biting wind cut into her exposed shoulders. She clutched her small satin purse against her ribs, her mind calculating the distance to the idling cabs across the boulevard.

Paparazzi strobes flashed like lightning through the blizzard. Heavy boot heels cracked against the snow-crusted marble behind her.

“Hold it right there, Mrs. Castellano,” Capo Sal’s rough voice cut through the howling wind.

Evelyn stopped. She turned slowly. Sal and Jimmy, a heavy-set enforcer, rushed down the steps. Their dark wool overcoats flapped open in the gale, revealing shoulder holsters and the dull metallic glint of Glock 19s.

Sal lunged, his thick leather glove reaching for Evelyn’s bare upper arm. “Don wants you in the back of the Escalade. Move, or we carry you.”

Evelyn sidestepped with razor reflexes. The ice beneath her heels held firm. Her sapphire-gray eyes locked onto Sal’s face, blazing with lethal disdain. “Touch me, Sal, and you will answer for every finger under maritime assault statutes. Get out of my way.”

Sal’s throat bobbed. He took another step downward, his boots slipping momentarily on the ice. He recovered, reaching for his waistband.

A low, deep rumble vibrated through the limestone steps.

A matte-black armored Maybach S680 glided silently to the curb at the foot of the stairs, flanked by two massive armored Escalades. The doors opened in perfect synchronization. Four massive ex-military operators in bespoke charcoal coats stepped onto the pavement. Their heavy boots hit the snow in unison, blocking the street entirely.

Marcus, the lead tactical operator, stepped cleanly between Evelyn and the mobsters. He formed an impenetrable human wall of charcoal wool and coiled muscle.

Jimmy tried to shove past. Marcus planted a firm palm against Jimmy’s chest, dislodging his balance and sending the enforcer stumbling backward onto the icy curb. As Marcus shifted his stance, his coat parted, exposing a concealed tactical submachine gun resting securely against his chest.

Sal stepped back, his hand dropping away from his waistband. His eyes darted to the ground, where Marcus’s combat boot deliberately stomped onto a small magnetic GPS tracking puck Sal had attempted to slide across the ice. The tracker ground into useless plastic dust.

“Step back six feet, gentlemen,” Marcus commanded. “You are encroaching on a private sovereign perimeter.”

“Vale Global security…” Sal stammering, sweating despite the sub-zero cold. “What the hell is Dante Vale doing on North Side turf?”

The rear door of the Maybach swung open.

Dante Vale stepped into the snow. He stood six-foot-four, a broad-shouldered titan in a charcoal Savile Row three-piece suit. His rich, deep caramel skin starkly contrasted the falling white snow. His amber-gold eyes scanned the perimeter with unyielding command, completely ignoring the Castellano thugs. The scent of aged cedarwood, dark Virginia tobacco, gun oil, and crisp winter ozone radiated from him, slicing through the smell of exhaust.

He walked up the stairs, past the frozen mobsters, and stopped directly before Evelyn.

The howling blizzard seemed to mute. Dante lifted his heavy, double-faced Italian cashmere overcoat. With deliberate, reverent grace, he draped it around Evelyn’s shivering shoulders. He reached forward, his warm, gloved fingers brushing gently against her collarbone as he gathered the lapels beneath her chin. An electric current sparked between them in the frigid air, forcing the breath to catch in Evelyn’s throat.

“Good evening, Ms. Moretti,” Dante’s deep velvet baritone resonated, permanently discarding her married name. “You’ve had a long four years. Your carriage is waiting.”

Sal found his voice, stepping backward into the snow. “Vale! She’s Roman Castellano’s wife! This is a direct violation of the Chicago River Treaty!”

Dante turned his head, his amber eyes locking onto Sal. The temperature on the steps plummeted further. “Tell Roman that Evelyn Moretti is under the Vale Sovereign Shield. If he wants her, he can come to River North himself… if he has the courage.”

Without another word, Dante placed a hand on the small of Evelyn’s back, guiding her down the final steps.

She stepped into the Maybach S680. The heavy armored door sealed behind them with a solid bank-vault thud. The sudden, profound silence cut off the howling blizzard entirely, cocooning her in ambient warm LED lighting and the scent of rich Tuscan leather. The four-year tension tightening her chest finally began to thaw.

Dante sat beside her, pouring chilled sparkling water with a slice of fresh lemon into a heavy crystal tumbler. He handed it to her. The cool heavy crystal grounded her shaking hands.

He reached into a sealed black leather portfolio beside his seat. He withdrew a thick parchment dossier, sealed with the red wax anchor emblem of Marco Moretti.

“Why are you doing this, Dante?” Evelyn asked, staring at the wax seal. “Roman has three hundred soldiers and half the judges in Cook County.”

Dante placed the dossier in her hands. She traced the raised wax beneath her fingertips.

“Roman is a butcher who built an empire on your father’s stolen sweat,” Dante replied. His amber eyes burned with fierce intensity in the carriage light. “Marco Moretti was my mentor, Evelyn. And you… you were never meant to be a trophy in a gilded cage.”

He leaned closer. His broad chest expanded under his waistcoat, radiating heat. “He gave you a cage, Evelyn. I am offering you the throne. We destroy him together.”

The Maybach accelerated smoothly, crossing the Chicago River into River North territory. Evelyn looked down at her father’s seal, the cashmere coat wrapped tightly around her shoulders, and felt the steel return to her spine.
