Chapter 4: The Boardroom Ambush
At 9:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the 48th floor of the Montgomery Tower was filled with tension.
Twelve senior board members, bank trustees, and estate managers sat around the fifty-foot walnut conference table, whispering anxiously among themselves. Outside the glass walls, a gray morning mist blanketed the Manhattan skyline.
The double doors swung open with theatrical flair.
Victoria strode into the room, radiating arrogant confidence. She was dressed in an immaculate ivory Valentino suit, wearing oversized dark sunglasses that she slipped off with practiced drama. Behind her walked two high-priced corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases, followed by Julian Vance, posing as her senior financial advisor.
“Good morning, gentlemen,” Victoria announced smoothly, taking the seat at the head of the table. “I apologize for the sudden emergency session. As you may know, my mother-in-law Florence has become critically incapacitated due to her declining health.”
A murmur of concern rippled through the board.
“Under the emergency conservatorship provisions of the Montgomery Heritage Trust,” Victoria continued, sliding a thick document to the board chairman, “I am exercising immediate power of attorney to transfer the management of all investment portfolios to the Apex Horizon Group to ensure stability.”
The chairman adjusted his spectacles, examining the signature page. “Mrs. Montgomery, this document requires the explicit notarized consent of both Florence and Edward Montgomery.”
“Edward is emotionally compromised by his mother’s condition,” Victoria replied smoothly, offering a fabricated expression of sorrow. “He has given his verbal blessing. Sign the transfer authorization, Chairman. We cannot afford market delays.”
The chairman picked up his pen.
BANG!
The boardroom doors were thrown open with thunderous force.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
Edward walked in, looking striking in a tailored midnight-blue suit, his jaw set in stone. Beside him, walking with steady, elegant grace, was Florence Montgomery, her head held high, adorned with the legendary Montgomery sapphire pendant. Flanking them were Counselor Marcus Graham and six plainclothes federal investigators led by Special Agent Miller.
Victoria’s pen froze in mid-air. Her heart skipped a violent beat.
“Florence…?” Victoria stammered, her mask of composure slipping. “Edward… what is the meaning of this intrusion? We are conducting trust business!”
“No, Victoria,” Edward’s voice resonated through the boardroom like a crack of thunder. “You are conducting a criminal heist.”
“How dare you!” Julian stepped forward, puffing his chest. “I am Mrs. Montgomery’s financial counsel. Security, remove these people!”
“Sit down, Julian Vance,” Counselor Graham barked, tossing a thick legal dossier onto the center of the table. “Or should I say, Mr. Cross—Victoria’s legal husband of seven years under Nevada State Registry File #4892?”
Gasps of pure shock erupted around the conference table.
“What… what nonsense is this?!” Victoria shrieked, backing away from her chair. “This is a smear campaign! Edward is having a psychotic break!”
Edward pulled a wireless remote from his pocket and pressed a single button.
Instantly, the four eighty-inch presentation screens mounted around the boardroom flickered to life.
High-definition video and crystal-clear audio filled the chamber.
On screen, every board member watched in horrified silence as Victoria viciously struck Florence across the face in the manor foyer, screaming: “Sign the damn papers! That money belongs to my husband!”
The audio from the hidden safe followed immediately: “Edward is an idiot, Julian… In six months, the Montgomery fortune will be ours, and we’ll be in Monaco.”
The silence in the boardroom was absolute.
The board members stared at Victoria in unmasked disgust and horror. The chairman slowly set his pen down and pushed the fraudulent documents away.
Victoria’s face drained of every drop of blood. She looked frantically toward the exit, only to see two armed federal agents blocking the doors.
“It’s over, Victoria,” Edward said softly, stepping closer until he stood directly across from her. “Every lie, every forged document, every dollar you attempted to steal—it all ends today.”
