Chapter 2: Unlocking the Second Safe

She Attacked My Dying Mother: The Second Safe Proved I Was Never Married 2 of 6

The front door slammed shut against the howling autumn storm, sealing the icy wind outside.

Edward gently lifted his mother into his arms, carrying her trembling body to the plush velvet sofa in the private sitting room. He brought a warm basin of water and a clean linen towel, kneeling at her feet to tenderly dab the bruised contour of her cheek.

“I’m so sorry, Mom,” Edward’s voice broke, tears spilling over his eyelashes. “I brought that monster into our home. I trusted her. I left you alone with her.”

Florence placed her frail, paper-thin hand over her son’s trembling fingers. “You loved with an open heart, Edward. That is never a sin. But greed wears many faces, and Victoria wore hers well.”

She held out the silver chain. The antique iron key swayed gently between them.

“Take it,” Florence whispered. “Before she returns with lawyers or mercenaries. You must see what is inside with your own eyes.”

Edward swallowed the lump in his throat. He took the key and led his mother into his late father’s private study. The room smelled of aged cedar, leather-bound classics, and pipe tobacco. Walking over to the grand oil portrait of Arthur Montgomery, Edward pushed the heavy carved frame to the left.

The wall groaned as a concealed motorized panel slid open, revealing not a standard home lockbox, but a heavy, military-grade titanium safe fitted with both an electronic biometric lock and an antique dual-cylinder mechanical keyway.

Marks of forced entry scratched the brushed metal surface—chisel marks, drill holes, and scorch scars from attempted chemical etching. Victoria had indeed spent weeks desperately trying to breach it.

Edward inserted the antique heirloom key into the lower cylinder and turned it.

A heavy mechanical clunk resonated through the hollow walls, followed by the hiss of pneumatic seals releasing.

The door swung outward.

Inside the safe lay no stacks of cash or velvet jewelry cases. Instead, the shelves held a thick manila dossier stamped with the seal of a premier private intelligence firm, three encrypted thumb drives, and a vintage leather-bound binder.

Edward pulled out the binder and flipped open the first page.

The document staring back at him stopped his breath cold.

It was a certified copy of a marriage certificate issued in Clark County, Nevada, dated seven years ago—two full years before Edward had ever met Victoria.

The bride’s name was Victoria Lynn Cross.

The groom’s name was Julian Vance.

“She was already married…” Edward whispered, his vision blurring with shock. “Our wedding… the vows in St. Patrick’s Cathedral… the license…”

“A sophisticated counterfeit,” Florence said softly from the doorway. “Julian Vance is an international con artist. Three years ago, your father began noticing anomalies in our offshore accounts. Before Arthur passed, he hired private investigators. They uncovered the entire operation.”

Edward thumbed through the dossier with trembling hands.

Photographs spilled across the mahogany desk: Victoria dining in private cabanas with Julian Vance; wire transfers routing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Edward’s architectural firm into shell corporations in the Cayman Islands; and worst of all, transcribed audio recordings from hidden listening devices installed in the manor.

Edward pressed play on a digital recorder attached to the file.

Victoria’s sharp, mocking voice crackled through the speaker: “Edward is an idiot, Julian. He thinks I love his quiet little life. The old woman is coughing up blood every morning—she won’t last the winter. Once she signs the foundation over to me, Edward will sign anything I put in front of him. In six months, the Montgomery fortune will be ours, and we’ll be in Monaco.”

Julian’s sleazy chuckle replied: “Make sure the old lady doesn’t wake up to change her will. Accelerate the timeline if you have to.”

The recording clicked off.

Silence engulfed the study, so heavy it felt suffocating.

Every romantic anniversary, every warm smile across the breakfast table, every whispered promise of a family and a future—all of it had been an orchestrated, predatory robbery. She hadn’t just deceived him; she had preyed upon his dying mother while plotting her demise.

Edward closed the binder.

When he looked up, the devastated, grief-stricken son was gone. In his eyes burned a cold, terrifying flame of absolute vengeance.

“Mom,” Edward said, his voice deadly quiet. “Tomorrow morning, the Montgomery Trust board convenes for the annual grant allocation.”

Florence met his gaze, her dignified smile returning amidst the pain. “And Victoria will be there to claim her prize.”

Edward slipped the thumb drive into his breast pocket and closed the heavy titanium door.

“Let her come,” Edward whispered into the darkness. “I will make sure she never walks free again.”
