Chapter 1: The Slap and the Heirloom Key

She Attacked My Dying Mother: The Second Safe Proved I Was Never Married 1 of 6

SMACK! SMACK!

The brutal crack of skin striking skin echoed through the cavernous marble foyer of the Montgomery estate.

Florence Montgomery stumbled backward against the sweeping mahogany staircase, her frail sixty-two-year-old body trembling violently as she clutched her burning, crimson cheek. Thin wisps of silver hair fell loose across her tear-stained face.

“Please… stop,” Florence whispered, her voice trembling with agonizing exhaustion.

“Sign the damn papers!” Victoria screamed, her manicured hand shaking with vicious rage as she thrust a thick stack of legal documents inches from the elderly woman’s nose. “That money belongs to my husband! It belongs to our future!”

“No,” Florence breathed, leaning heavily against the banister to keep from collapsing onto the polished floor. “It was never meant for you. Not a single cent.”

Victoria’s diamond-encrusted rings caught the chandelier light as she raised her hand once more, her knuckles white with fury. “You stubborn old hag—”

Click.

The heavy front oak door swung open with a soft groan.

Edward Montgomery stood entirely frozen on the threshold. In his right hand, a fresh bouquet of vibrant bluebells and golden buttercups—his mother’s favorite wildflowers, freshly cut from the valley—slipped silently from his numb fingers, scattering across the welcome mat.

He stared in paralyzed disbelief at his glamorous, elegant wife.

Then his gaze shifted down to his mother’s red, swollen cheek and the silent tears streaming down her hollow face.

“GET AWAY FROM HER!”

A roar of primal fury tore from Edward’s chest. He lunged across the foyer, grabbing Victoria by her silk-clad shoulders and violently hurling her back from the staircase.

“Edward!” Victoria shrieked, stumbling against a marble pedestal.

“You slapped my mother!” Edward stood between them like an enraged titan, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a fury Victoria had never seen in five years of marriage. “You put your hands on my mother in her own home?!”

“She refused to sign!” Victoria spat back, desperately adjusting her designer blazer.

“What papers?!” Edward demanded, his voice shaking the crystal pendants above. “What could possibly justify you striking a defenseless woman?!”

Victoria’s jaw clamped shut. A sudden, guilty silence fell over the hallway.

Behind Edward, frail fingers weakly tugged at his woolen jacket.

“Edward…” Florence whispered, struggling to catch her breath. “She knows.”

Edward froze, turning slowly to look at his mother. “Knows what, Mom? What does she know?”

“She went into my private room,” Florence choked out. “She found my medical records.”

The air inside the room seemed to vanish in an instant. Edward’s heart seized in his chest. He turned back to Victoria, his voice dropping to a terrifying, hollow whisper. “What medical records?”

Victoria recovered her composure, her lips curling into a cruel, triumphant smirk. “Tell him, Florence. Go ahead and tell your golden boy what you’ve been hiding for six months.”

Florence looked down at the marble floor, incapable of speaking through her silent sobs.

Victoria folded her arms across her chest, tapping one polished heel against the stone. “Tell him you’ve been sneaking off to St. Jude’s Oncology Unit three times a week.”

The color completely drained from Edward’s face. The room tilted violently beneath his feet. “Cancer…?”

“Terminal,” Victoria declared without a shred of empathy in her cold eyes. “Stage four adenocarcinoma. She has months left. Maybe weeks. And you had no idea.”

Edward stared at his mother in absolute horror. He knelt swiftly before her, his hands trembling as he took her cold, frail fingers into his own. “Mom… is it true? Tell me she’s lying. Please tell me she’s lying…”

Florence couldn’t bear to look into her son’s devastated eyes. She offered only a slow, heartbroken nod.

Edward’s mind fractured under the weight of the realization. But before he could process the grief, his gaze locked onto the thick contract lying crumpled on the staircase steps.

He stood up slowly, towering over his wife. “What were you trying to force her to sign, Victoria?”

“The estate!” Victoria gestured aggressively around the grand manor. “The house. The six hundred acres of prime upstate land. The family investment portfolios. Millions upon millions of dollars!”

“And why were you demanding she sign it over to you today?” Edward’s voice was as cold as a winter tomb.

“Because she was going to sign it all away to charity!” Victoria shrieked. “To some pediatric oncology foundation! Why should random strangers get our inheritance?! It’s OUR future!”

“No,” Edward said, his jaw tightening into iron. “It is her life’s work. It is her family’s legacy. It was never yours.”

Victoria glared at him with venomous disdain. “You are so hopelessly blind, Edward. You have no idea what your precious mother has been keeping from you.”

Before Victoria could speak another word, Florence reached inside the neckline of her modest cotton blouse. Her trembling fingers pulled out a thin silver chain, at the end of which hung a tiny, intricately carved antique iron key.

Edward recognized the heirloom instantly. It was his late grandmother’s key—a piece of family history believed to have been lost decades ago.

Victoria’s smug expression instantly disintegrated. The color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her face as white as chalk.

“Give me that!” Victoria lunged forward like a feral animal, her manicured nails reaching desperately for the chain.

Edward blocked her with a solid forearm, shoving her back forcefully. “Stop! What does this open?”

“Nothing! It’s garbage!” Victoria panicked, her voice cracking into shrill hysteria. “Edward, don’t listen to her! Give me that key!”

Florence raised her head, looking past Victoria directly into her son’s bewildered eyes. Her voice was steady, cutting through the tension with chilling clarity:

“The second safe.”

Victoria froze in place, her breath catching in her throat.

Edward slowly turned his head to look at his wife, noting the sheer, unadulterated terror radiating from her eyes. “What second safe?”

Florence tightened her frail grip around the cool iron key. “The one hidden behind your father’s library portrait. The reinforced titanium vault she spent three months trying to crack while you were away on business.”

Edward’s heart hammered against his ribs like a war drum. “What is inside that safe, Mom?”

Florence looked at Edward with boundless sorrow and fierce motherly love. She pointed her finger directly at Victoria.

“The proof.”

“Proof of what?!” Edward demanded.

“Proof that she never married you because she loved you,” Florence whispered. “Proof that your entire life with her… has been a lie.”

Victoria didn’t utter a single defense. Without looking back, she spun on her heel, ripped open the front door, and sprinted out into the torrential rain, the headlights of her sports car illuminating the darkness before tearing away down the driveway.

Edward stood alone in the howling wind of the open doorway, staring out into the rain.

He had come home carrying flowers for his dying mother.

Instead, he had discovered that the woman he called his wife had beaten his mother for her fortune—and was terrified of what lay inside a hidden safe.

Because whatever was inside that vault possessed the power to annihilate everything Edward believed about his five-year marriage.

And Edward was going to turn that key tonight.
