Chapter 3: The Web of Greed
Midnight rain lashed against the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows of a luxury Manhattan penthouse thirty floors above Central Park.
Victoria paced across the Italian marble floor, nursing a glass of bourbon with shaking hands.
“You idiot!” she snarled, whirling around on the man lounging casually on the leather sectional. “I told you Florence was sharper than she looked! She had the key on her body the entire time!”
Julian Vance, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, took a slow sip of his drink. His cold, calculating eyes narrowed slightly. “Did Edward open the safe?”
“I don’t know!” Victoria snapped. “I had to run before he called the police. The look in his eyes, Julian… he wanted to kill me. If he unlocked that vault, he has our marriage certificate. He has the Cayman wire trails.”
Julian set his glass down on the glass table with a sharp tap. “Then we don’t have months anymore, Victoria. We have hours.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Tomorrow at ten in the morning,” Julian said, leaning forward, “the Montgomery Heritage Trust holds its annual executive meeting. Under the emergency spousal power-of-attorney documents we forged last week, you are listed as the secondary conservator of the estate. You walk into that boardroom with our attorneys and execute the asset transfer to our Swiss holding company before Edward can file a formal injunction.”
Victoria hesitated, touching her trembling throat. “And what if Edward shows up with the police?”
“He won’t have the legal standing in time,” Julian sneered. “A domestic dispute takes forty-eight hours for probate courts to intervene. By noon tomorrow, fifty million dollars will be cleared through Zurich. By tomorrow night, we’ll be on a private charter to Brazil.”
Victoria’s fear gave way to intoxicating greed. Fifty million dollars. Total freedom. A life of untouchable luxury.
“Get the notary ready,” Victoria said, her eyes glittering with dark resolve. “I’m taking everything.”
Meanwhile, in the grand library of Montgomery Manor, the lights burned bright until dawn.
Sitting across from Edward was Counselor Marcus Graham, a silver-haired titan of corporate litigation who had represented the Montgomery family for over thirty years. Beside him sat Special Agent Raymond Miller of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Major Economic Crimes Bureau.
On the table between them lay the full contents of the second safe: original audio tapes, certified bigamy records, forensic bank statements, and crystal-clear high-definition security footage captured earlier that evening by the foyer’s hidden security camera.
On the monitor, Victoria’s violent assault against Florence played in horrifying, undeniable detail: the two vicious slaps, the screaming demands for money, the threat of violence against a terminal cancer patient.
Agent Miller slammed his notebook shut, his face dark with righteous disgust.
“Aggravated elder abuse, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit probate fraud, and felony bigamy,” Miller stated firmly. “This isn’t just a civil divorce, Edward. This is a multi-jurisdictional federal indictment.”
“She’s planning to strike the trust tomorrow morning,” Edward said, his voice eerily calm. “Julian Vance has shell entities registered in Zurich ready to accept wire transfers.”
Counselor Graham leaned forward, a grim smile touching his weathered face. “Let them walk into the trap, Edward. We’ve already placed a secret judicial hold on all Montgomery foundation routing numbers. The moment Victoria signs those fraudulent transfer orders in front of the board, she commits an overt felony act on camera.”
Edward turned to the doorway.
Florence stood there, wrapped in a warm cashmere shawl. Her face was pale, but her posture was royal, unbroken by the cruelty inflicted upon her.
“I am coming with you tomorrow, Edward,” Florence said softly.
“Mom, you should rest—”
“No,” the matriarch interrupted with quiet, unshakeable authority. “I spent thirty years building this foundation with your father. I will not hide in the shadows while a thief tries to rob our life’s work. I want to look her in the eye when she falls.”
Edward stood up and walked to his mother, taking her fragile hands in his.
“Then tomorrow,” Edward whispered, “we end this together.”
