Chapter 5: Blood on the Storm Precipice
Stage Three, the Bridge of Tribulation, was a ten-foot-wide span of flawless white Olympian marble suspended over a bottomless chasm. Thousands of feet above the cloud layer, ferocious gale-force winds howled through the gorge, threatening to tear a man from the stone. Below, a vortex of dark storm clouds churned with hidden lightning.
Alexios advanced steadily across the bridge, his eyes fixed on the glowing archway of Stage Four in the distance.
Behind him, heavy boots struck the marble. Valerius Aurelius, his face twisted in a manic, hysterical frenzy, drew his ancestral weapon—the Gilded Solar Spear, Helios’s Fang.
“Cut him off! Kill him now!” Valerius screamed over the howling wind, ordering his four elite Sparkbearer guards forward. “No slave will ever leave this mountain to disgrace House Aurelius! His corpse goes into the abyss!”
The four highborn veteran guards drew their broadswords and curved spears, fanning out into a coordinated cordon, trapping Alexios on the narrow span. The freezing rain sprayed across their hot gold armor, while the solar flames along the tip of Helios’s Fang hissed and spat.
Alexios turned slowly, the broken chains wrapped around his forearms clinking against the stone. “Four armed nobles to corner one unarmed slave. You highborns are cowards to your very bones.”
The four guards attacked simultaneously, thrusting in a synchronized spear-wall formation designed to skewer him or force him over the edge.
Minerva’s tactical geometry overlaid Alexios’s vision in a fraction of a second. “Lead guard heavy on his back heel—sweep and shatter. Third guard overextends—counter on the jaw. Flawless execution.”
Alexios ducked beneath the lead spear thrust, allowing the blade to pass inches over his shoulder. He swept his heavy iron chains low, smashing into the ankles of the two front guards and sending them crashing hard onto the wet, slick marble.
The third guard lunged. Alexios caught the spear thrust directly with his bare palm. Utilizing Volkan’s kinetic conversion, he absorbed the weapon’s forward momentum, stepped into the guard’s guard, and drove a brutal, rising elbow directly into the man’s helmet visor. The bronze and bone shattered with a sickening crunch.
Spinning on his heel, Alexios hoisted the fourth guard by the throat and breastplate, bodily hurling the screaming man over the marble balustrade. The guard’s shrieks faded rapidly, swallowed by the thunder chasm below.
In under forty seconds, all four elite guards lay broken, incapacitated, or dead.
Valerius stood alone on the bridge, trembling uncontrollably in sheer panic. He realized with absolute, terrifying clarity that he could not survive a fair duel.
Valerius raised his left hand, activating the Lionheart Sigil Ring upon his finger. A blinding, supernova flash of concentrated solar radiance detonated point-blank in Alexios’s face. The searing light burned Alexios’s corneas into temporary white blindness.
Seizing the cowardly advantage, Valerius lunged forward with his entire body weight.
He drove the burning blade of the Gilded Solar Spear straight through Alexios’s right chest.
The wet, sickening crunch of the gold blade breaking ribs and piercing muscle echoed over the wind. The spear carried Alexios backward, pinning him forcefully against the ancient stone balustrade over the void. Searing solar flames erupted from the spearhead inside Alexios’s chest cavity, burning deep tissue and filling the freezing air with the stench of scorched blood and roasted flesh.
Valerius gripped the spear shaft with both hands, twisting the blade with sadistic, hysterical glee. He pressed his face close to Alexios’s ear.
“A slave is livestock, Alexios!” Valerius sneered, breathless and dripping with venom. “Even if you break every record in this temple, my spear reminds you of who owns your blood! The Ambrosia belongs to House Aurelius! Die in the dark, you filthy mongrel!”
Alexios coughed, thick crimson blood spilling over his lips and down his chin. His hands slowly rose, his fingers gripping the burning spear blade inside his own chest.
“Your spear…” Alexios gasped, his voice vibrating with a terrifying new resonance, “…cannot burn… what the sky itself forged.”
Alexios’s mortal blood poured from the horrific chest wound, cascading down his body and pooling directly into an ancient carved relief of Zeus’s Thunderbolt embedded in the bridge floor.
The extreme mortal trauma, combined with his own blood contacting the ancient altar of the Sky Father, pushed the Everwar Body past its final biological limiter.
Inside the deepest reaches of the Soul Sea, the outer shell of the rusted iron medallion shattered with a thunderous roar. The unadulterated divine ichor of Zeus, the King of the Gods, ignited within Alexios’s bloodstream.
The sky above Mount Caelum instantly turned pitch-black. Primordial thunder shook the Aegean Sea to its bedrock. The howling gale-force winds abruptly fell dead silent, halting in cosmic reverence.
Pure Golden Celestial Lightning erupted from the wound in Alexios’s chest, violently wrapping around the spear shaft. The petty, searing solar flames on Helios’s Fang were instantly smothered and extinguished like a candle in a tempest.
Alexios opened his eyes. The blindness was gone, replaced by a blazing, unyielding golden divinity.
With his bare left hand, he gripped the razor-sharp spearhead embedded in his chest. Slowly, deliberately, ignoring the tearing of his own flesh, he pulled his body forward along the blade, stepping away from the balustrade.
He closed his right fist around the golden spear shaft. With a single clench of his hand, he shattered the ancestral heirloom of House Aurelius into jagged fragments of useless gold scrap.
Alexios stood tall. Golden lightning filaments wove through his torn muscle fibers, knitting the mortal wound closed before Valerius’s horrified eyes. The stratosphere split open, and a colossal, blinding pillar of pure golden celestial lightning descended from the heavens, engulfing Alexios in a halo of supreme cosmic sovereignty.
Valerius’s legs gave out. The golden heir collapsed to his knees on the wet marble, weeping and wetting himself in primal terror before the true God of the Sky.
