Chapter 2: The Whispers in the Rust

Scorned Slave: Awakening the Son of Zeus 2 of 6

Midnight smothered the pitch-black slave barracks. The cold dirt floor smelled of damp earth and unwashed bodies, the heavy breathing of exhausted laborers rising and falling in rhythm with the distant drip of subterranean moisture.

Alexios knelt beside the thin straw pallet. He tucked the coarse wool blankets tightly around Elena’s frail shoulders. Resting on her chest, the Broken Silver-Oak Ring emitted a faint, pulsing silver aura, a fragile ward that concealed their spiritual signatures from the scrying arrays of the highborns and calmed her shallow, rattling breathing.

Satisfied she was stable, Alexios moved to the center of the cramped alcove and sat cross-legged on the dirt. He reached into his torn tunic, his calloused fingers wrapping around the pitted, rusted iron medallion.

He closed his eyes. He regulated his pulse, breathing past the agonizing, searing pain of the whip lacerations on his back, sinking his consciousness deep beneath his mortal flesh, diving down into his inner core.

The squalid darkness dissolved.

Alexios materialized standing upon a vast, floating expanse of celestial basalt—the Shattered Pantheon. Broken marble colonnades drifted in a limitless void of purple-black storm clouds, while distant arcs of celestial lightning violently illuminated the horizon. The ozone scent of the soul realm filled his lungs, replacing the stench of sulfur.

The moment his boots touched the stone, a towering figure in crimson bronze plate charged him like a battering ram.

Kaelen, Spirit of War, slammed his bronze gauntlet toward Alexios’s skull. Alexios rolled beneath the impact, his muscles coiled, springing to his feet with crossed fists. Kaelen unleashed a relentless, savage barrage of heavy strikes, forcing Alexios backward.

“Three lashes from a painted princeling and you didn’t even rip his throat out?” Kaelen snarled, his voice a roaring tempest of bloodlust. “Stand up! The ground is for corpses and cowards!”

Before Kaelen could land a crushing knee, a colossal magma warhammer swung through the air, catching the bronze gauntlet with a booming clang that rattled the floating marble.

Volkan, Spirit of the Divine Forge, stepped between them. The massive smith wore a dragon-hide apron, his arms composed of living, churning magma. He planted his hammer and let out a deep, rumbling laugh.

“Shut your bloodthirsty trap, Kaelen!” Volkan boomed, his molten eyes scanning Alexios’s spiritual form. “Nineteen years of shoveling slag made the boy’s bones denser than an iron anvil! He didn’t just take the whip—he swallowed the princeling’s solar fire whole!”

A cold, crisp voice cut through the bickering.

“Enough posturing. Elena has seventy-two hours. Look upon the trial arrays.”

Minerva, Spirit of Strategy, descended from the floating colonnades, her silver and sapphire armor gleaming in the astral light. She planted her owl-engraved spear against the basalt. With a sweeping gesture, she summoned a glowing, three-dimensional tactical illusion of Mount Caelum, mapping out the four ascending stages of the Temple of Zeus.

Volkan reached out, placing his glowing magma palm directly over the spiritual reflection of the triple iron brand on Alexios’s right shoulder.

“Breathe through the burn, lad!” Volkan commanded.

Volkan forced the stored solar energy and kinetic shockwave—harvested directly from Valerius’s barbed whip—into Alexios’s bone marrow and primary meridians. Alexios locked his jaw. His spiritual muscle fibers tore, compressed, and forcefully reknit. Golden filaments sparked and flared within his spiritual bloodstream as the solar fire hardened his skeletal lattice.

While Alexios endured the searing, agonizing reconstruction of his Everwar Body, Minerva used her spear to highlight the blue-glowing hazard zones on the illusion.

“Stage One: The Hall of Trial Thunder,” Minerva stated, pointing to a thousand-yard corridor. “Obsidian lodestones discharging continuous azure lightning. The highborns will use you as a lightning rod. Do not evade. Use the volcanic brand on your shoulder as a conductor.”

“When those sky-bolts hit you tomorrow, don’t brace—drink!” Volkan laughed, sparks flying from his beard. “Let the lightning forge your marrow!”

Minerva shifted the map to a massive colosseum. “Stage Two: The Labyrinth of the Bronze Minotaur. A ten-meter automaton. It possesses a structural micro-fracture at the tertiary pivot of its right knee hydraulic cylinder. Strike there.”

She zoomed in on a narrow bridge spanning a chasm. “Stage Three: The Storm Precipice. Valerius relies on the blinding flash of his solar thrust to mask his overextended right shoulder. Valerius has a zero-point-three second recovery delay on his Solar Flare Thrust. When he lunges, do not retreat—step through his light and break his center.”

Minerva swept her spear, drilling Alexios in the Heavenly Aegis Stride, forcing him to track the displaced air currents and step seamlessly into the blind spots of her thrusts.

The harsh clanging of the dawn iron bells shattered the soul connection.

Alexios snapped his eyes open in the dirt of the laundry barracks. The damp chill of the mortal world rushed back, but he felt different. He reached behind his shoulder. The deep, weeping lacerations from the barbed whip had closed overnight, transforming into dense, silvery-pale scars. The rusted iron collar and thick shackles on his wrists, which normally dragged at his joints, now felt as light as woven straw.

He stood, perfectly balanced, his internal meridians humming with contained kinetic force.

He pulled the wool mantle higher over Elena’s sleeping form and knelt beside her ear.

“Wait for me, Mother,” he whispered. “Before the sun sets tomorrow, you will drink the Ambrosia.”

Overseer Marcus’s boot kicked the barrack door off its iron hinges. Twenty armored guards poured in with drawn cudgels, dragging the thirty selected slaves out into the freezing morning fog of the courtyard.

As the chained column formed up, the iron gates ground open.

Valerius Aurelius rode through the archway atop a purebred white warhorse. He was clad in gleaming Sunburst plate armor, a fur-trimmed crimson cape spilling over the saddle. He looked down at the shivering, chained slaves with utter disgust.

“Thirty branded corpses in iron,” Valerius sneered, his voice carrying over the courtyard. “Try to survive until the second gate, dogs—I would hate to waste good gold plate on tripwires.”

Alexios marched at the absolute head of the doomed column. His spine was perfectly straight, his heavy chains making no sound. He tilted his head up, his storm-gray eyes locking onto Valerius. Deep within his pupils, a single, imperceptible golden electric spark flared and vanished.

Ride high while you can, Valerius. Mount Caelum belongs to the sky, not the sun.

The slave column marched out of the Lower District, winding their way up the jagged, switchback trails. As they reached the immense, imposing base of Mount Caelum, the dark tempest crown of storm clouds swirling above the peak rumbles violently—pulsing with a deep, earth-shaking boom that beat in exact synchronization with Alexios’s heart.
