Chapter 4: The Shattered Colossus
The entrance to Stage Two loomed ahead—twenty-foot walls of black basalt and polished serpentine stone that twisted into a maddening maze. The grinding rumble of subterranean clockwork gears echoed from the floor, vibrating through the soles of Alexios’s bare feet.
Humiliated and desperate to prevent the branded slave from reaching the summit before the High Council could witness the disgrace, Valerius Aurelius sprinted into the labyrinth, flanked by his four elite Sparkbearer guards.
Valerius cornered Alexios at a three-way junction, deep within the scrying arrays’ blind spot. The golden heir drew his steel twin blades, his face flushed with panic and venom.
“Cut him down, Marcus!” Valerius shrieked to his lead guard. “Flay him to the bone!”
Before the guards could step forward, the floor rumbles violently. The labyrinth’s ancient weight-distribution triggers, sensing the concentration of armored mass, activated.
Massive monolithic granite slabs slammed down from the ceiling like immense guillotine blades. The sheer rock severed the junction in a cloud of friction dust, locking Valerius and his guards in a side corridor. Immediately, the hiss of poison dart vents and the mechanical whir of rotating scythe pillars echoed from their side of the wall.
“Open this gate! Marcus, cut it down!” Valerius screamed through two feet of solid granite. “When I get through, I will flay that slave alive!”
Alexios calmly wrapped the heavy, broken lengths of his iron slave chains around his forearms. “Worry about the darts behind you, Valerius.”
The floor beneath Alexios tilted, forcing him through a collapsing stone archway that instantly locked behind him, sealing him inside the central colosseum.
The titanic circular amphitheater was carved inside the hollowed core of the mountain. The ancient domed ceiling was adorned with Golden Age frescoes depicting Zeus striking down primordial beasts. In the center of the arena stood an imposing alcove of black volcanic iron.
Scorching steam blasted violently from exhaust grates along the perimeter. The arena floor trembled with a rhythmic, earth-shaking thud.
Stepping out of the steam was the Bronze Minotaur Automaton.
The ten-meter-tall war-golem was a marvel of ancient celestial bronze. Its chest housed a spinning crystalline reactor core that crackled with concentrated blue lightning. In its massive bronze fist, the titan dragged an eight-meter black-iron greataxe, the heavy blade leaving deep gouges in the basalt tiles. The Minotaur emitted a deafening mechanical roar through its snout, locking its glowing red ocular sensors onto Alexios.
“A real opponent at last!” Kaelen roared in the depths of the Soul Sea. “Don’t back down, boy! Take its best swing and show this scrap metal what real fury is!”
The Minotaur charged, its five-ton hooves accelerating with terrifying speed. It swung the colossal greataxe in a brutal horizontal cleave meant to cut the entire chamber in two.
Alexios executed the Heavenly Aegis Stride. He stepped directly inside the apex arc of the swing, moving fluidly into the weapon’s path rather than dodging backward. He crossed his heavily chained forearms and met the flat of the descending axe blade head-on.
The impact detonated like a siege mortar.
A kinetic shockwave exploded outward, cracking the basalt floor tiles for thirty yards in every direction. Ninety percent of the two-ton concussive force bypassed Alexios’s skin and was absorbed directly into his skeletal framework via the Everwar Body. His bones groaned under the immense pressure, compressing and hardening instantly, while the stored celestial voltage from the First Gate surged in his muscles.
Alexios slid backward ten yards, his heels tearing deep trenches in the stone, but he stood unbroken. A thin line of blood ran from his lip, and a cold, feral smile touched his face.
“Two tons of kinetic force straight into the marrow! Pack it tight into your fists, lad!” Volkan laughed uproariously.
“Right knee cylinder,” Minerva’s voice cut through the ringing air with absolute precision. “Hairline fracture at the lower hinge. Strike during the recovery cycle!”
Alexios spat a drop of blood onto the stone. “He swings hard. But he lacks technique.”
The Minotaur raised its massive left hoof, attempting to stomp the insignificant human into paste.
Alexios slipped beneath the descending shadow of the foot, whipping the heavy, weighted iron slave chains around the golem’s damaged right knee joint. Tapping into the immense reservoir of kinetic force he had just absorbed, Alexios wrenched the chains backward with devastating torsion.
The bronze hydraulic cylinder sheared apart with a catastrophic, ear-splitting screech of tearing metal.
The ten-meter giant lost its balance, crashing heavily down onto its shattered knee. The arena shook violently.
Alexios did not hesitate. He sprinted directly up the fallen automaton’s massive arm, scaling its chest plate in two blinding, agile leaps. Standing at the titan’s bronze throat, Alexios funnels all the absorbed kinetic energy and the stored azure lightning directly into his right fist.
He drove an Azure Thunder Strike squarely into the reinforced celestial breastplate, punching straight through the armor and deep into the spinning lightning reactor core.
A blinding supernova of cerulean and golden light detonated outward. The automaton’s chest exploded into smoking bronze shrapnel. The concussive blast severed the heavy bronze head, sending it crashing heavily to the arena floor.
High above the shattered colosseum, the ancient Olympian trial obelisk blazed with golden runes, its message broadcasting across the entire mountain:
Stage 2 Completed. 400-Year Trial Record Broken. Clear Time: 114 Seconds. Candidate: Unknown.
The granite walls at the edge of the arena ground open.
Valerius and his surviving guards staggered out of the side maze. Their golden cloaks were shredded, their armor scorched by poison darts, bleeding and disheveled. Valerius raised his head, and froze in paralyzing, absolute horror.
Standing victorious atop the severed head of the legendary Bronze Guardian, steam rising from his crackling right fist amidst the smoking ruins, was the slave he had whipped the day before.
