Volume 1 Chapter 3 — The Midnight Drift Ultimatum

Return of the Drift King 3 of 6

The Midnight Apex Club was built into the cavernous subterranean levels beneath the mountain lookout at Dragon’s Crest Pass. Neon lights in crimson and violet pulsed against raw concrete walls, illuminating hundreds of high-society spectators, corporate elites, and underground racing enthusiasts.

Outside, the mountain air was crisp and cold, a thick layer of night fog rolling across the winding asphalt of Dragon’s Crest Pass—a road infamous for its thirteen hair-pin curves suspended over thousand-foot drops.

Elena Vane arrived with her security detail, wearing a midnight-blue velvet coat. She moved through the buzzing crowd, keeping her head held high despite the sneers from Victor Cross’s entourage.

At the center of the paddock stood Victor’s prized possession: a bright yellow, custom-built 1,000-horsepower twin-turbo hypercar. Beside it stood Duke “The Anvil” Mercer, a notorious professional street racer known for his aggressive, dangerous driving tactics.

“Looking for your driver, Elena?” Victor mocked as he stepped over, a glass of champagne in hand. “I heard Vane Dynamics couldn’t even find a rookie to sign up. If nobody takes the starting line for your team in twenty minutes, you forfeit the wager—and ten percent of your company’s equity.”

Elena’s hands clenched inside her coat pockets. Her recruited driver had backed out at the last minute after receiving subtle threats from Victor’s thugs. She stood isolated, surrounded by hostile spectators.

“There’s still twenty minutes, Victor,” Elena said coldly.

“Ten minutes, Miss Vane,” Victor sneered. “And on this mountain, nobody arrives unannounced.”

Just as Victor finished speaking, a low, deep rumble shook the mountain floor.

It was not the high-pitched whine of modern hypercars, but a thunderous, mechanical roar that sounded like a mechanical beast awakening from a five-year slumber.

The crowd parted in awe as a low-slung, matte-black GT coupe rolled slowly into the paddock entrance. The vehicle was wider, sleeker, and far more lethal than any standard production car. Its dark tinted windows hid the driver completely, but on the rear wing, a subtle emblem was stenciled in ghost-silver: a hovering falcon wing over a golden crown.

Gasps echoed across the paddock.

“That emblem…” an old racing veteran whispered, pushing to the front of the crowd. “No… it can’t be! That’s the mark of the Drift King!”

Victor’s smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of anger and disbelief. “Impossible! The Drift King retired five years ago!”

The matte-black coupe glided to a stop in the Vane Dynamics pit bay. The driver’s door swung open, and a tall figure in a plain black racing suit and dark-visored helmet stepped out into the fog.
